I was having problems with my 200GY-5 when it would warm up and run for a while, then die and restart after it cooled. I was thinking it might be a bad carb, relay or stator and then found that there was no spark coming from the plug. I changed the plug then found by testing that the coil had no power coming to it. I arced the relay and it turned over but still no spark. Please help!

Sounds like a CDI box or maybe the trigger coil if our bikes have one.
Check all the connections to make sure they are tight.

Got a volt/ohm meter?

The ignition coil has 1 or 2 wires and the spark plug lead. If there are 2 wires, only 1 should be connected to ground with the switches in the running position. If there is 1 wire, it should not be grounded while in the run position. If your problem is here, check the kill and key switches. Resistance on the coil should around 6 to 11Kohms

There should be at least 5 wires from the motor. 2 are from the stator. There should be at least 80vac from the stator. 2 wires are from the ignition pick-up coil, they should have just a few volts ac to trigger the ignition. Stator resistance should be around 50-200 ohms. Ignition pick-up, about 500 ohms. The AC {lighting coil} should read about 1 ohm, and may share a ground with the ignition side of the stator.

These problems can fool you, coils can resistance test perfect and still be bad. My guess, bad ignition coil, but I have been wrong before, and recently! 2nd guess, stator. Ignition coils are cheap and just about universal fit, the stator...not.

Good, a more experienced answer. I have a had coils go bad and give the same symptoms, but he said no power at the coil.

Thanks for the testing specs, but yes... No power "at" the coil. I checked the wiring harness everything is tight and fuses are good. I do have a multitester, but I think it's old and broken. I've just been using my power tester. I'll check the stator/trigger coil (if there is one) too. Any advice pertaining to this or other likely causes and solutions/procedures would be greatly appreciated. If it's the CDI or Stator what would be a good supplier?. So far I've found X-Rage (do they only wholesale?) and Endless Journey Cycles. Is the CDI module comparable to the Honda CB125?

If you go to the T-Motorsports Ebay site they sell CDI'S AND STATORS in their Ebay store.

They only have the CDI's up to 125 cc. Does anyone know for sure if it would work in the 200cc Lifan?

Hi Murse
I received your e~mail, glad I found this thread. ob1 is most likely correct on the running test & the still test, he does know his stuff. He is also correct that things will test good and not be, because after you start the engine everything gets hot and that can be where the problem lies. Electrical parts will short, break down, leave opens etc. I haven't ever had to test any of these parts yet...no bad ones. As far as a Honda CDI box...not sure and I don't know if I would try it.
The PICK-UP coil sends a signal to the CDI box, the charge coil sends the juice to the CDI box, then the CDI box tells and sends juice to the ignition coil to spark the plug. So from what I see here you could need either a CDI box, Stator assembly or both. I can get the parts but will have to check prices on them.

A shorted kill/key switch could easily cause no power to the coil. Disconnecting them is the easiest test.

I know of no tests for the CDI box. I have never had one fail either... As far as replacing one, they are rather universal. On my XR/Lifan 200, I am using the OE Honda wiring. The CDI box is the same as the XR100 box as far as the plug-ins go. I run a White Bros racing CDI box on the XR/Lifan, spec'd for the XR100. If the plugs match, it should work fine.

I think you need to do a lot more testing before you start buying. Parts switching as a diagnosis tool can get expensive, but sometimes that is what you have to do when it comes to problem coils. Make sure you have exhausted all your options before you start buying.

Not so long ago, there was a CR125 with the same issues. After buying an ignition coil, CDI, and a stator, it was fixed. Every part replaced static tested perfectly...the stator was the fix.

Hopefully the first part will fix your bike, not the last! Good Luck!!!

I too have seen the same symptoms with a bad stator. It was a GY-6 motor. Another common china clone motor based on Honda.
