View Full Version : 72 MPH on a China Bike!
I recently clocked a 2006 American Lifan GY-5 going 72 mph. It is owned and ridden daily by one of the posters here on this board. I was on my KTM 950 riding along side the Lifan. The KTM digital speedometer was reading 70 mph but is 2 mph off (verified by GPS). Next time we'll take the GPS and maybe hook it up on the GY-5.
Just thought I would post this and hopefully get him and others to comment on their bikes and their experiences at 70+ mph.

It's not an everyday occurrence, but it has definitely happened more times than I can count. Still running strong after 7400miles.

It's all in the gearing. A mid 40's rear sprocket and a 16 or 17 tooth front should do the trick.

Hit 70 on more than one occasion, wouldn't try to maintain that speed for long though... I'm running a 17/42 combo and am going to a smaller front soon...

by the way that 72mph was on a flat witch we don't have much up here . i hit that speed twice a day to and from work stock gearing couldn't tell ya what it is . i like it on road ,but i was trail riding with sam today and to me at least 1st gear is fine but second seemed a little to high . i was gonna let sam try it but before i could my chutch cable needed adjusted so we headed back. what a fun day.

72 is all the faster I want to go on this bike. I ordered a JT 45 tooth rear. If I can get to 70 for a short burst that will be fine with me. I am looking for a crusiable speed of 50-55 for my commute. I only take the backroads to keep off freeways.
I am only 140lbs so it should be able to still pull me off-road.

Yep, I'm weigh even less than katoranger, and I hit 50mph today on a stock 15/46 setup. I'd be very happy cruising at that speed. But 72, woooop. Is that a true 200cc, All I have is 150. It says 162 FMJ. I'd have to be falling from a plane to hit 72 :D

wish i could hit that speed, must have upgrades lol.what would be the best cruzin rpms,i hit 7 at 50 on a 17/46?
Apparently I hit 135km/h yesterday.. but I am sure my speedo is acting up... sad really, been good till now, going to clean the speedo thing on the axle and re-lube the cable
I'll get a picture next time!
It's not going 72 mph in this one. Here's a pic for anyone that doubts that a china bike will go off-road. Way to go pumpkin! I was impressed with your ability and the bikes capability. I didn't get any pictures of the deep mud crossings or hopping the downed trees. Maybe next time!
Oh yeah, disregard the Yamaha in the background!

My cycle tops out at 50mph :( 72 is only a dream for now....... But if the bike comes apart it could be my nightmare  Still nice to see these bikes can perform.

I have had mine offroad already in the junkyard. My friend took it and his 9 year on an xr80 down some powerlines. He roosted his son with some sand. Bike had 50kms on it. Actually it first few kms were all offroad. Did a few laps around the house.
I work odd hours so it is hard to get any action shots. I am going to try and get some pictures with my friend and his kids on Saturday.

I think we've gotten off topic...
ohwell, mine gets offroad now too... well sort of... I guess a forest service road is a road, but it has been out in:
about a foot and half of snow
rotten bark mulch
lots of pavement
gravel roads
about a foot to foot and half deep water crossing
very hard potholes gravel/dirt/sand roads at about 60km/h
sandy rocky hills
So far it has gone everywhere I wanted, kept up (for the most part) with the bigger bikes (group off road rides), and not really broken. I even think I got a little bit of air off a rock that looked sort of like a mini jump sticking out of a gravel road at 50km/h. I have bent my front rim a tiny bit, but still rides good, changed a tube, and had one bolt come out of the rear footpeg. About 1100km so far I think.

With the new lifan engine in my viva I have hit 70 a couple of times but it cruises good at 60 with 17/45 sprockets and that makes me very happy.

hey akon, with the 17/45 wat was the speed on the viva motor.

FWIW, mine does 45mph at 6K rpm on a 17/45 setup.

On the viva motor you could get up to about 65 but the engine was way up on rpm's. The lifan motor all around runs a good 1500 rpm lower than the viva at all speed comparisons. Also the gears on the lifan motor are spread out better so you actually use your gears not like the viva that gets you to 5th gear in about 20 to 30 feet.

BUMP
That works out to 9333 rpms @ 70mph. Think i'll spring for that combo on my VIVA.
with my current setup which is I think 17 42...not sure if when they took the liberty to change sprockets on my bike they changed the front from stock. BUTTTT... i run 55mph at 6000 rpm. It is hard to believe how much harder the bike seems to run @7000 than at 6000. 6000 is much better. at least imo.

i might just touch 7000 before i shift and i feel like i beat the hell out of this thing. what do you guys rev your gy-5 to?

Hmm, now that i think of it...
Probably should gear it so you reach the peak of your power band at 65-70 so you will have less trouble maintaining speed on grades and headwinds. :?
Think that would be closer to 8k for most of these bikes. :?:
I have a stock UM dsf 200 and it can go 71-72 but it doesn't sound like it likes going that fast. I am 175 pounds and I have to tuck a bit. My bike cruises nice at 55. I would not drive it faster than that for very long. I have about 800 miles so far, and some of my problems with the bike have been posted before.
