nice colour! :D looks like hardly ridden (or cleaned very well)
also looks like duct tape around the inlet rubber and a flatly squished plug wire
yes, cleaned very well :D and you're right about the plug wire. looks to me like it melted from the header? i'm going to be replacing that as soon as i can.

Looks like orginal tires. They do okay at lower speeds on the road.
Front fender can be replaced with a universal Honda type. Honda red will match pretty close.
I think you did well at $450. That is a pushrod engine. Good and reliable and a 200cc will bolt in.
and there is black duct tape on the boots. guess they were getting a bit cracked and the PO decided on a quick fix. He just rode this around his pasture. broken front fender :(
yes, these are the original tires I believe. they are in pretty good shape. the duct tape needs replacing lol

Should be able to find a new intake boot.
I actually sealed the ones on my yamaha radian with orange RTV. Ghetto, but it got me by until I found a good set.
This may be the right one. You will need to compare it.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intake-Manifold-Pipe-150cc-200cc-250cc-ATV-Dirt-Bike-Intake-30mm-/370707644074?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item564fe5beaa&vxp=mtr
i will be getting the front fender, mirrors, and horn asap. also found the taillight lens, most of these parts are matching up with a 85 honda xl 125s. except the seat. idk maybe yamaha or something. can't wait to ride this out of the driveway lol
yea i am sure i can find the intake boot. i found the tail light lens i need. runs $30 from the dealer, it's from an 85 honda xl 125s. seems like most of the OEM parts for that bike match well with this one. except for the seat and fairings.
katoranger
02-18-2013, 08:33 AM
Alot of those parts will cross over from the honda.
The seat and tank are likely different.
haha. quit writing what i'm writing at the same time :P the seat looks more like yamaha to me. i like the steel tank. dont care much for the headlight fairing or tank fairings. kinda looks cool without those. well if i replace the headlight assembly anyway. optionally i may spring for some gauges and turn signals. apparently those are not required here though.

I think that the plug wire will unscrew from the coil. It's tight, but it should come out. Just peel back the rubber boot that covers the transition from the wire to the coil and start twisting. I've done that on a few China bikes and quads so far, and replaced them with NGK wires. The NGK wires have lower resistance and are more flexible in cold weather.

That is a pushrod engine. Good and reliable and a 200cc will bolt in.
My thinking exactly. :D Even a 230 would bolt in.
That engine is based on the venerable Honda CG125, and the valve adjustment tutorial is here: http://hondacg125.awardspace.com/valve_clearance.htm
nice that's good info there guys, thanks. I am going to try to get the plugs and wire changed out later today.
if i change the sprocket size i need to change the chain size, but how do i know what size chain is here already?
alright, i just ordered mirrors, horn, new taillight lens, license plate bracket, and front fender. also, fixed the front brake master cylinder. the sight glass was cracked and falling apart allowing fluid to leak out. so i cut a piece of heavy duty plastic out, cleaned all the existing crap out, popped the plastic peice in, and jb welded that sucker shut. it is solid and not leaking. just going to sand it down and paint it. guess i will just be popping the top off from now on to check. front brake works good again.
also.. the electric start.. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. kick starts super easy first time every time. when the ES is working, it is first time n go also. when it is not working, there is no sound or anything when you push the button in. if you kick start, then press the starter button, you can here it whirl. it works more often than not, but it's baffling me.
Weldangrind
02-19-2013, 12:40 AM
It's quite likely a 428 chain on there now; very common in 125-230cc China products.
The starter symptom is odd. Do you have to hold the brake to make the starter spin?
no, i haven't ever needed to hold the brake to get it to spin. Normally, with bike in neutral, i flip the kill switch on, turn the key to on, and then push the start button and it starts right up. never had to hold in the clutch or brake. i will be checking all the wiring in a couple days i guess when i get my horn in since i will have to wire it in anyway. stupid starter. :/

Test your rear brake and confirm that the brake light comes on every time. If it does, try the electric start with the rear brake on.
the rear brake does activate the light each time. front brake also. starter button not working when brake is applied. yesterday it was working the first time i started up but later on was not working again. today, not working so far.

If you jump the solenoid, does the starter spin every time?
I haven't tried to jump the solenoid yet. But I will have a chance to check it out this morning and I will let you know what I find. Maybe I just need to brush off all the contacts or there is just a weak connection or loose wire somewhere. I may be receiving the horn today, so I will get into the wires when I do that install
so ive ordered most of the things i need i think. although im hoping to some how figure out how to universally wire everything up i guess. mcgyver time 8) also took off the dust boots. they need to be replaced anyway. here are some pics of the bike and the things i plan to install

thanks spudrider! i kinda like it without the full sleeve of the dust boot. looks less like a dirt bike lol. nice bracket you got there i got mylicense plate bracket for $4. made a bracket for it and mounted it up. plus the new tail light lens i got is clear underneath so it functions as a plate light too :D

I was thinking that your bike would look great with a supermoto fender, and it looks like you bought one. I wouldn't bother with gators if you're just gonna ride on the street, but they're a good idea off-road.
I'm looking forward to this project.
it is in fact, a supermoto front fender

What is it with these Panterras? I have seen a few of the 125s for sale on the Phoenix and L.A. CL, and none have front fenders. Not going to lose sleep over it  but did they not come with fenders?
haha mine came with half a front fender. PO broke it.

You going to add 3 more engines?
well the fender is mounted. a little off on the color. but i may paint it black anyway. the mirrors' threads are too small i thought i had ordered the right size, but apparently i need 10mm thread not 8. so back to ebay for adapters i guess. here is a quick pic of the new fender; i have the original headlight and fairing on at the moment because the new one is going to take some alterations to be perfect, and i haven't gotten to the shop yet. maybe tomorrow afternoon. don't mind the mess in the garage lol

Mess. He hasn't seen pics of my shop. I think Weld has the same issue.
ugh i need to find a way to get this bike to the shop for installs. no luck with a truck, may need to ride dirty lol
is it possible that there is no tachometer mount on my engine? defeats the purpose of buying a tach/speedo combo. smh
katoranger
02-28-2013, 03:35 PM
On my lifan the tach cable came out of the clutch cover on the front side.
Some of the later bikes had electronic tachs.
my speedometer works :D i will have to figure out the tach or just fuhgettaboutit heres a pic. all i need to do to be street legal at this point is get the horn working! :D

the clutch cover you say? ill check it out. the cable i have isnt very long so hopefully it is in the front. might not even be present though? it is a 2004. it may not match up all though the speedometer works, i had to modify the mounting of it. its from a suzuki cg125
also picked up these reflector license plate bolts for a couple bucks

I am pretty sure it was coming out of the clutch cover. I may be wrong on that. It may have been from the crankcase someplace.
would it be one of these round ports that look like i could open with a nickel? i see two. guess i can post pics next time i go out to the garage
also should be fun getting all this wiring hooked up so the indicator lights work and what not. and wiring the horn. trying to get it done myself so i dont have to take it to the shop. motorcycle class this weekend and its going to be cold and raining. dammit. lol

Terrific news! :D
thanks! learned a lot. it was a fun experience. sometime in the future i will take the advanced class as well. can't ever have too much training right? lol. so i am just waiting to get this damn horn working then i can go to inspection. back to the original headlight for now, because i need some hardware to correctly get the new headlight installed. it was pointing up over cars haha. 85 in san antonio today, sure do wish i could go for a ride!!
http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y447/JEllard81/IMAG0238_zps9d0c9c92.jpg
also. speedo works, but the backlight i have not figured out. the tach is not going to be possible (at least not this tach anyway) but i would like the indicator lights to work. think i may need those to be legal i'm not sure?
[/i]
alright, i have the horn working :P and the speedo light working as well. ready for inspection i just need my M endorsement. u do need that for inspection correct? everything working and street legal but i would still like to get the blinkers installed. havent gotten those figured out yet. having trouble with the aircleaner boot not staying on the carbs bottom side completely. cant seem to get it over the rim and snug. also, the choke lever near the handgrip is broken so i think its causing the choke to stay either on or off and i am not getting a very consistent fuel mixture.. it is bogging and losing power and sputtering about. sometimes it takes a lot of throttle to keep going. ?
http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y447/JEllard81/IMAG0271_zps6f4003b2.jpg
couple more::
http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y447/JEllard81/IMAG0270_zps1ae13b6b.jpg
http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y447/JEllard81/IMAG0269_zps64ad0229.jpg
i did away with the tach and just mounted the speedo in the center of the bracket. had to get a relay and a switch to wire the horn up but that wasnt too hard. speedo light went to the tail light wire and works perfect.
did an oil change today. bet it has never been done before. bike is shifting smoother and runs better. still find myself hitting 5th gear at around 30mph is that normal? have not went much faster than 40 but seems like that would be about my top speed? 55 would be nice.
i noticed that the crankcase breather hose is pretty much shot. it is located directly under the carburetor. there is only about 1.5'' of tube there and its split badly. is that effecting my performance? i need to check the spark plug and see what it looks like. the choke adjuster on the handgrip is broken so i just keep the lever on the carb in the down position is that ok?
electric start is not working and when the key is turned no lights come on and the horn doesnt work either. i can kick start it just fine and everything works again. is that a battery issue?
annndddd finally i took a ride around the block last night and when i apply the brakes the headlight dims almost to nothing. release the brake and the light is back to full strength.
ha there ya go theres plenty to talk about now lol. anyone chime in with some advice?
SpudRider

Is the crankcase breather hose connected to the air box, or does it vent directly to the atmosphere?
Spud :)
katoranger
03-14-2013, 02:15 PM
My guess is the crankcase breather is a direct vent. Just buy a new hose and route it down below the back of the crankcase toward the ground.
Sounds like your battery died.
You need to get rid of that dinner plate rear sprocket and go for about a 45T rear to get your gearing more street friendly.
i dont see any way that the hose had been connected to the air box so i think it just vents to atmosphere.
i will look into the sprocket and get a new battery. i need a tender or something i dont have one at all.
i know you cant really tell what kind or size sprocket this is by the pic, but i know ive seen a link on here about sprockets i just cant seem to find it now..

technically it's a motor-driven cycle according to TX DPS as it's 125cc and would need more displacement to be considered a motorcycle. i say if it has two wheels and you don't have to pedal, it's a motorcycle. the harley guys don't wave back though. ha! i like to think i have modified to a dual sport rather than a dirtbike, and the tags will prove that when i get them. what's in a name anyway
