Does anybody know who makes the engine in the Tank 250 scooter?
Just curious.

The tank engine is a Honda "Clone" it's hard to tell which company in China actually built it. This post was in reply to similar question on the ScootDawg forum by Stan Jessup resident mechanical guru owner of a Tank 250
"My understanding was that the Honda clone 250 was verticle and Linhai design was horizontal. Maybe I'm all wet here, but this is what was posted some time back:

Here is a good explanation of the 10" vs 12" wheel options as they relate to engine makers. This was posted on ScooterBBS by Lev, the owner of Baron Motorcycles. The feedback from others about this post was that this was a great explanation of which engines have which wheel size.

"There are two types of engines. Honda clone that's made by CF Moto and Yamaha clone that's made by other factories. CF Moto's Honda clone had been in production for about 16 years. It is a very good, reliable engine. It is used in most 250cc go carts and water cooled ATVs. This engine accomodates a 10" wheel, not a 12" wheel. If there are any overheating problems with this engine, they are not due to the engine. They're usually due to position of the radiator and external switches.

The other engine is Yamaha Linhai and its clones. Yamaha Linhai is a good engine, but the clones are very young and not proven. These engines accomodate 12" wheel because they have longer bodies. These have horizontal cylinder VS vertical cylinder for CF Moto. Yamaha clones are made by several factories and one must be very careful selecting the engine that's made by the right factory. All factories only do assembly, not actual parts manufacturing, so quality of castings and internal components is very important. "

The Tank 250cc definitely has the vertical cylinder engine."

Ahh... the mystical world of the Chinese scoot...

The manufacturer of the engine is CFMoto, although I wouldn't put it past Tank to use whatever they can get their hands on at the time.

Yep! I just got a tank 250, and it had a cf moto tag on the motor.

Hey,
The US street/cruiser version looks like this from AJS in England:

As someone pointed out they seem to be clones of old Jap designs that are produced by several manufacturers. Nice looking scooter by the way, haven't seen that model over here ...

Pete, the bike you posted is the 'Tank' branded bike. No one seems to know who the engine source truly is.

Hey Culcune,
I have the 250E air-cooled and the engine looks very much like this one from Jailing:

See their site:

Perhaps it's made (with minior variations) all over the place in China, either under licience or as a clone of something else (?). Most of our 250's here seem to have more or less the same engine, although some have kickstart, others not ...

Cheers

Thanks for that information, Pete. There was a debate on the Tank group (link to that club from the home page here) about the true engine source for the Tanks. Come to think of it, I don't think we will ever find the true source to most of the bike's engines!
