Hi All, just wondering about how different countries or states number plates are configured. In Ireland we have a new plate at present. This type of plate actually started in 1987. So if I lived anywhere in Waterford county, with the exception of Waterford city, and I bought a new vehicle in 1987 and it was the 500th vehicle registered in the county that year my plate would be 87 WD 500. If I was living in Waterford city it would be 87 W 500. But this year it all changed as it being the year 2013 the plate would start with 13. So as the Irish are really superstitious the vehicle dealers created a big deal with the government saying that sales would be at an all time low(as if they weren't already)as no one would want a vehicle starting with unlucky number 13. So the government and the motor authority came together and suggested from now on we would add a 1 for the first 6 months of the year and a 2 for the second 6 months of the year :? Only in Ireland I hear you say!! So that is how my plate came about 131 WD 465. Nuts or what :D

well, that is a good story. it is so true, u couldn t make it up!

why is 13 unlucky, though?

here s what i culled from the wp:

Evidently the number 13 had been considered sinister and wicked in ancient Iranian civilization and Zoroastrianism; Since beginning of Nourooz tradition, the 13th day of each new Iranian year is called Sizdah Be-dar and this tradition is still alive among Iranian people both inside modern Iran and abroad. Since Sizdah Be-dar is the 13th day of the year, it is considered a day which evil's power might cause difficulties for people; Therefore people desert the cities and urban areas for one day and camp in the countryside.

but would they alll camp during 2013? probably not, there ll be an excuse!

as for me i ve heard of WD40, but not of WD465, though i would take it as a lucky number. :D

That's a funny bit of info.

In Canada, the plates depend upon the issuing Province. Most Provinces have a six letter / number combination, but Ontario has seven characters (like California). In BC, we started with three letters and then three numbers, but we're now using the reverse. There is no date logic to the plate numbering system, since the date is a decal that is applied each year.

In Idaho the first two characters of an automobile license plate indicate the county where the vehicle is registered. For example, a car registered in Ada County would have a license plate with beginning with the characters 1A. A license plate for a car registered in Adams county would begin with the characters 2A, et cetera.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_counties_in_Idaho

The registration sticker indicates the month and year when the vehicle's registration expires.

Motorcycles don't follow the example for automobile license plates, except for the registration sticker. ;)

Most US states are similar. Spud says that Idaho has a county identifier.

Here is Kansas are plates are 3 numbers and 3 letters. My plate has a sticker in the upper left for the county and the upper right is the year of registration.

Georgia the county was spelled out on the bottom of the tag. I have a collection of tags. Will take some pictures today from a few states. I did get a set Netherlands tags from a relative.

You can see one of them in the picture besides my Dad in this article.

in mainland australia, the 7 states and two territories have different colours against a white background, though sometimes the schemes change. used to be white letters on a black plate in the olden days.

new south wales has a yellow blackplate.

it s 3 numbers and 3 letters or the other way round, in queensland the numbers come first, in victoria the letters.

Brilliant, well done to him!
Isn't it great the way a story about a Waterford number plate leads to this

We have that tendency here. Did you see the Netherlands plate? The colors indicated something if I remember correctly.

I have the other one here in Kansas.

Yes I saw it. Not sure about the colours. Maybe it is for a comercial vehicle as we see a few trucks from the Netherlands over here and I think they ars all blue and yellow.

Its possible. The relative operates a dairy farm there. He didn't say what they came from only that they are suppose to be turned back in when a vehicle is scrapped.
