View Full Version : Stator coil (Magneto)?

Well folks, after 4000km, my Skyteam decided to give me his first grin. The two bolts that hold the stator coils assembly got loose and the coils started rubbing against the flywheel:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DAc8bgtgOSA/UXV1nxqBl0I/AAAAAAAAAvs/fUd53OS6vKw/s612/IMG_0334.JPG

I neglected the rattling from the left side of the engine and today it stopped...

I think it's a "standard" OHC Honda clone engine (has 166FMM code on it):

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ifTbGXayHFI/UXV1plgQvvI/AAAAAAAAAv8/1os5Zyy_68c/s612/IMG_0340.JPG

Any suggestions where I can get new assembly from?

CB's (~6.2) hole is 1mm bigger than the std CG (~5.2). If the std CG parts don't fit, just drill it.
Why not change to 3 phase all-DC http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=1651715694

Egads! 8O I can't offer good advice for finding parts. However, I do recommend you put red locktite on those bolts when you install the new stator. ;)

If I change to this stator, I guess I'll have to change the rectifier, right?

Indeed Spud, there will be lots of Loctite.... and one feather washer for that matter.

Yup. Also need DC-CDi

Besides changing to a DC-CDI unit, you would also have to change you wiring harness. ;) For example, you would need to feed 12V+ to the DC-CDI unit. Also, you would need to change the wiring for your kill switch, et cetera. The kill switch grounds the output from an AC-CDI unit, while the kill switch removes the 12V+ input to a DC-CDI unit.

I think you will have much less work if you get a replacement stator which will support your current, AC-CDI unit, regulator/rectifier, and wiring harness. ;)

Well, I'm waiting for the UK importer of Skyteam to give me a quote, and actually Skyteam in China themselves replied to my inquiry and will point me towards a suitable retailer (waiting for their reply also).

In the meantime, judging from the looks only, mine seems to be pretty much like any these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110957724551

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281094064688

Later I'll measure it in detail to know what I'm looking for exactly.

If use non CB stator , soldering iron may need because the trigger (pickup) is on different parament. the "CG" one also need drill a bigger hole.

Hey humanbeing,
Thanks. I think this one is "the one":
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=20657952333

but the price seems low compared to the hundreds other stators I looked at in taobao. Is there a catch I'm missing (Google is not translating much from the page)?

Hi Krasi,

I got my V-Raptor here:

http://www.herter-quads.de/

I'm sure they can get the parts and send them to you.

Look here:
http://www.herter-quads.de/images/stories/Downloadkataloge/skyteam/st125-engineparts.pdf

Do you have the 125 or the 250?

Thanks, Trailbikeryder. I dropped them an email. I hope they speak English, as my German is good only to get me into trouble :D

I actually got a quote from the UK importer, but the price is 67.45 GBP, plus shipping! I find that way too much for my cheap a$$.

In parallel, I wrote to Skyteam themselves and they replied. The price they quote is US14.50 w/o shipping! Now, we need to find a suitable shipping option. As a last resort I plan to ask www.tbtrends.com (thanks, Weld) to receive and relay it for me as if I bought it from taobao.

I must say I'm impressed with the customer support of Skyteam. In the past, when I was looking to purchase the bike, they did quote me a price for a single bike. Now, they are helping me with that. I promised to spread the word about it, so:

Skyteam factory customer service is excellent! I highly recommend them!

THis is what it would cost from Germany to Bulgaria.

8,90 Euro
Max 2 kg (max. L+B+H=90 cm)
length+height+width = not more then 90cm

15 Euro
Max 5 kg (max. 120 x 60 x 60cm)

If you need help to ship parts from Germany, I could do that for you.
How much do the weigh?

Thanks, Trailbikeryder. I'm still waiting for response from Herter Quads, though.

humanbeing, yesterday I checked in person one CG stator (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281094064688) and unfortunately it's not only the mounting holes that are different. Its core is narrower, i.e. windings are different, and also the pickup coil mounting holes are further apart.

In the meantime, I continue with the (sort of) "reverse engineering" and noticed a logo on the inside of the stator cover:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-84QpWMIdEHc/UXjHfg2Pr4I/AAAAAAAAAwg/U1qXyiMDr_M/w571-h428-p-o/IMG_1045.JPG

Any idea who's that? Google image search can't match it with anything.

Hi Krasi,

any response from Herter? I could call them.

Maybe I should check my Magneto? Maybe my screws are loose also?
(from magneto I mean!!)

I have 3200 km on the bike now.

It wouldn't hurt to check them, Eric. A little Loctite is cheap insurance.

Nope. Nothing at all.

In the mean time I got the "factory connection" rolling and now the taobao agent is waiting for the stator to arrive at his place to ship it to me. Cost so far (stator+"in-China shipping"+agent fee)= USD 30. Shipping to Bulgaria should be another 20-25 USD.

As for checking the bolts, you could but be careful with the gasket when you remove the cover. It's nothing fancy, just plain paper and breaks very easily. However, if you don't hear any rattling or other unusual noises, you're most probably fine.

Well, one month to the day after the bike stopped running, yesterday the stator arrived in my mail box. Total cost - $47. Installed it (blue thread lock + locking washers :)) and the bike runs like a charm again! Yupee!

Once again, I'm absolutely delighted and blown-off by the "factory support". No idea how are the dealers, but I plan on using the factory directly if I can :D The "technology" using an agent has been discovered, so next time I need something I think it'll be much faster.

i like what a number of people on this forum have reported about taobao agents. i think it was tbtrends. i ll try them out as soon as i need to get something...though it probably helps to have more than one bike, given the waiting involved.

krasi, what was your other bike? i only remember it was something substantial, like a ducati or bmw.

Glad to hear you got your bike running, Krasi. The Loctite should keep the bolts in place.

I'm surprised that it took that long to receive the parts. The longest I've waited for a Taobao shipment (via TBTrends) is about a week.

Krasi_BG
05-23-2013, 02:40 AM
Well, I lost some time trying to source it from a dealer around my part of the world. Then it took few days to "connect" tbtrends and the factory and settle the details.

And finally as it's not a "standard" taobao order, the operators at tbtrends didn't know how to process my package. They even sent me pictures to ask if this is my item :D The package was shipped from tbtrends ~10 days ago.

zingshoen, my other road ride used to be a Cagiva Raptor (1000), but now it's a Beta M4.

Actually the Skyteam is for my wife, but these days I seem to get a special look when I try to open my mouth about riding without her.... And in the beginning of our "dating period" many, many years ago, she was terrified of bikes. Man, people don't always change for the good :) I got to finish the top-end rebuild of my "woods" bike (GasGas EC300) as soon as possible as there I can ride without "extra luggage" :D:D:D

Glad to hear you got your bike running again. I just had my 4000Km inspection done on mine. I told my mechanic to check those two screws, and showed him your pictures of your bike. He only charged 15 Euro extra on top of the regular inspection price to check them. He said my screws were not loose (I mean the ones from the bike ;) ), but he put some loctite on them.

Krasi_BG

Very well. That means so far I'm unique :D

Did he find anything not right during the inspection?

Did he find anything not right during the inspection?

The front parking light was bad. He checked the valve clearance, changed oil, changed spark plug, checked screws and greased moving parts. So everything seems to be okay.

My rear bulb goes bad at least every 500-700 kms though. Do you have that too? I haven't come around to order a led bulb. I think that would solve problem with vibration on bulb.

The chain seems to be crap. I think it has no O-Rings. No matter how much you grease it, it still rusts. Also it is a 520 chain, which seems to be too big for this bike. A 428 chain should be enough. I think I will change that soon, and maybe change sproket sizes. I was thinking of 15/32. Original is 13/34. What do you think?

Krasi_BG
07-02-2013, 11:49 AM
So far in >5000km I had to change two rear light bulbs.

Indeed OEM chain is not good (as apparently all Chinese OEM chains). I still run it, but have to tighten it often as it stretches quickly despite my super-duper automatic oiler. When it's finally time to change it, I also plan to go up 1 tooth on the front (or go 3 down at the back), because now gears are too short for the 100% paved road riding the bike does. Especially 1st gear...

Trailbikeryder

I ordered this one today along with a 428/17 front and a 428/40 and 428/42.

If I did the calculation right the 428/16 and the 428/43 equals the original of 520/13 and 520/34...

Krasi_BG
07-10-2013, 05:30 AM
That's a very nice price for an O-ring chain. Did you order the sprockets from Polo Motorrad too?

Trailbikeryder
07-10-2013, 09:42 AM
Yes I did. They are selling out all the RK chains because they are changing to AFAM chains.
The front sprocket was like 5 Euro and the rear 6-8 Euro.
Thats why I ordered two sizes for the rear to see which is better. I don't have the order numbers for the sprockets thought. The guy from the Polo store just ordered the right ones for the 428 chain.
