an update on this front: i ve just installed replicant (http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/GalaxySI9000Installation) on my hand-me-down galaxy S. no wifi and no bluetooth, but the rest works: phone, sms, internet (with tor and orbot), seems to work well. installing it was easy, though a bit of mucking around is required to get all the instructions to work. i had to install heimdall without a usblibrary to get the right version to work and it didn t need the usblib after all.
