Has anyone done this to a gy-5?
I've got an 18" 4.10 rim on the rear w/bad spokes and frozen shaft on the rear drum.
I know it's probably not worth the time/$$/effort but if I buy a new bike my wife will probably leave. Lol.
I was wondering what size street rim would fit the rear w/o changing the swing arm and if there's someplace to buy the dis bracket from the GY-2's?
And also how small/what size could I go in the front. It's got a 21" on there now.

If your wife is anything like Mrs. Weldangrind, she's pretty and she smells nice. Do what you need to do to keep her. My bikes have slowly multiplied, and she's still here, so I'm very lucky.
I'd simply repair the rear wheel and lace an 18" rim to the front hub. Supermoto bikes normally have 17" front and rear, but it won't be noticeable. Once you have sport bike tires on front and rear that are both 18", you'll achieve the look you're after. There are some excellent vids on Youtube that will teach you how to lace a rim. Buchanan's can sell you custom spokes if needed. http://www.buchananspokes.net/
What do you mean by dis bracket?

i think he mistyped disk... as in converting the rear from drum to disk brakes...:hehe:

Ah. Of course.
I wouldn't change it from drum to disc, if that's what you're saying.

i agree, my kawasaki is drum rear, and my shineray is disk rear... both lock up the rear easily, which isnt exactly a good thing... and theres not much difference to me in brake modulation, so i dont see the benefit of a rear disk, other than it looks cool...LOL

If you are looking for a 18" rim for the front i have one on a parts wheel. I also have spokes and the drum brake components. (just replied to your thread on TT)

Welcome! We are glad you joined us. :hi: I agree with Weld; a pair of 18-inch wheels will look great, and you will only need to lace the front wheel, instead of both wheels. ;)

I found all the parts for a conversion on eBay off a Lifan gs. I think they'd go together the same but can't be sure. It was a good price and I may explore that option at a later date. Maybe if/when I get a diff bike. I'm just looking to make this one road safe.
What's the widest tire I could get on the stock swingarm?
Also looking into sprockets. I would like to stay at or near the stock ratio, or one better suited for mostly street, but can't seem to find the 17/46 combo in 428 w/I having to buy two kits. (420's and 520's are all over eBay) not sure if bikemaster is reputable or not
I'm interested in going to 520, but I'm still unclear about how to do it. I'm kinda new to all this. Kinda migrated here from a scooter so I'm learning a bunch of new stuff.
Thanks for the responses!

The 520 will last forever, but it's an extra parasitic power loss. I'd stick with an HD 428.
Regarding the tire width, I'd guess that you could fit as much as a 5.10 on the back, but that's asking a lot from the rim, and I'm not sure of the chain would clear. Perhaps you should stick with a 4.10 (or maybe a little wider).

In metric a 120 will fit I believe. 110 clears fine. Stick to the 428. You may need to buy the sprockets and chain separately to get the combo you want.

I agree with the others; I would certainly stick with the size 428 drive chain. ;)

I found a 15/46 428 set. Would there be major difference in that?

That would be better than stock gearing, but still pretty low. A 17/46 seems to be about right.
