so... ever since i started watching youtube vids of supermotos, i have wanted a su-mo...now thats gonna happen, and on the dirty cheap too... to start this off, i picked up a set of 1987 kawasaki ex250 ninja rims...for $113 shipped... need to get a cush drive hub for it, and a proper sprocket but other than that, parts are fairly well done (aside from fabbing the appropriate spacers for the rims and making the proper brake mounts...all stuff i can do LOL) so yeah... picture these rims (painted magnesium/goldish color) on my bike...

I wouldn't worry about a cush hub too much unless you like to shift without the clutch alot

I need the cush hub anyways for the wheel... Its cheap anyways... LOL unless of course i just weld the hub to the wheel... However i do tend to shift clutchless alot...

Sorry i didnt see the ask for updates.... Well no actual work has been done yet, other than Danita thinking it would be a nice gesture to buy me a shinko 567 front tire and 568 rear as well as a sprocket to convert it to 520 chain so i can use the stock ninja rear sprocket... I did also pick up a rear axle and spacers for the ninja, figure it would be a good starting point for modding stuff...

Picture time... On the left we have a 110/80-16 shinko 567, and the right a 130/80-16 shinko 568...

Kato hit the nail on the head... Cheap wheels... 17s would likely have run 2-3x as much for decent straightrims...however theres a trade off... Tire selection for road tires is limited to scooter tires for the most part for a 16" rim...

Still need to figure out the rear brake mount, and a few other little things...

Oh as a side note, you dont really think about some things until its happened... The stand over on this bike is now similar to my ke100.... I think over all the switch from 21/18 to 16/16 combo lowered the bike a good 5-6"... May be a viable option for any shorter riders... Oddly enough, the kickstand needed no modifications....its just that short...LOL

ordered up wheel bearings for it yesterday... took a while to find a few of them, since they are nonstandard bearings... hardest one to find was for the cush drive... a 15mm bore with a 52mm OD....LOL turns out theres an alternator bearing thats just the right size out there... so i will hopefully get the bike totally together and safely rideable within the next week or so... still need to fab a bracket for the rear brakes though... anyone have ideas?

If that's the case, I'd track down a second swingarm. Undo the shock bolt, drive the pivot bolt out and slide the swingarm away.

i am not gonna lie... its scary at first... the wierd part is i can ride a wheelie on my mountain bike at balance point, which is a far steeper angle, for far longer than i am comfortable with on the motorcycle... its pretty easy to power it up, due to the large rear sprocket, its currently geared sligghtly shorter than the stock 17/56 gearing...its a 13/45 520 chain gearing... i am probably going to get a 38 rear for it eventually, but its kinda nice to be able to hooligan it a bit...LOL i may keep it this way for a while...
SpudRider
03-29-2014, 02:14 PM
I'm glad you are making good progress, BB.
However, I wouldn't pop wheelies without a rear brake. The rear brake is your only safeguard from looping the bike. ;)
Weldangrind
03-29-2014, 03:14 PM
The angle of that wheelie looks really cool.
If you saw how the bearings had impinged on the steering neck of my TW (from a previous owner), you'd never wheelie again.

so... yesterday i got the brakes sorted... it all started with a trip to harbor freight...why not use chinese stuff on a chinese bike...LOL i picked up a few things, not knowing what all i would need... but heck its cheap, and i can use it for other stuff...LOL ended up getting two packs of 4.5"metal cutoff wheels, and a corded 3/8 chuck drill (my milwaukee 1/2" chuck is a pain in the tuchus... the chuck is so stiff you strip out chuck keys...only way to tightne/loosen it is a pipe wrench and a vise...) didnt end up needing to use the drill, as i decided after seeing another guy do the same (hes a machinist though and i doubt that he used an angle grinder...LOL) i found it the best to cut down the diameter of the rotor... how does one keep things round? pretty simple... put bike on stand, start motor, put in 2nd gear...rear wheel is off the ground, now spinning...steady hands on the grinder, and you start your cut line...because its spinning its like a lathe... took 3 cuttoff wheels, but it worked... i didnt think to take pics of it, but it doesnt really look any different than stock, other than if you look close, you can see the outer most row of drilled holes got mostly cut off...so theres dimples on the edge of the rotor... heres a pic of the guys wheels that inspired me to do it...
look closely at the rear rotor.. he actually took more off than i did, he cut into the second set of holes, apparently his KTM uses a smaller rear rotor... he also cut down the front as well... the stock rotors each drilled line is 4 holes long, both front and back...

03-30-2014, 12:22 PM
That's a neat idea. You were using cut-off discs on the rotor? I would not have thought of that. By reflex, I probably would have gravitated towards a flap disc.
It sounds like your 1/2" chuck has seen better days. If you can get it to tighten around an old allen wrench, it's not to difficult to change the chuck. A genuine Jacobs is only $10 at HF: http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-inch-jacobs-keyed-chuck-45731.html
bogieboy
03-30-2014, 04:06 PM
i used the thin cutoff wheels spinning the opposite direction of the wheel, and perpendicular to the braking surface, cutting thru the face instead of sanding down the diameter. i tried 40-120 grit flap wheels and didnt hardly scratch the surface...
as for the ole milwaukee, the reverse doesnt function anymore either...LOL
Weldangrind
03-30-2014, 04:21 PM
The switch on the Milwaukee is replaceable. Drills of that quality are rare these days, so it's worth fixing.
I can now visualize how you were cutting the rotor. Makes perfect sense.

That explains the power then. Only thing I don't like about two strokes is they gotta be rebuilt before a four stroke would but a 250 two stroke has almost double power of a four stroke 250.
bogieboy
03-31-2014, 10:55 AM
a two stroke of equal displacement to a four will always make around 190% power of the 4.... my kawa ke100 can keep up with my shineray.... i would say they are about evenly matched in the power.... just the shineray has the edge on suspension believe it or not....LOL

actually no...
front wheel is stock speedo drive in the stock spot, stock spacer on the brake side, and then 3-5 washers to make it all line up proper (i forgot how many i used...LOL)
out back its stock right side spacer of the brake mount, wheel, cush drive, and then just the stock spacer on the left...i ened up using the ninja spacer, even though its pretty similar in size...LOL I paid for em i may as well use em...LOL and no washers out back.
its a fairly straight forward bolt up affair once you swap out the 17 and 15mm bore bearings for 15 and 12 mm bores to fit the axles...
the rear end, aka the wheel and cush drive i used:
one B15-86D-2RS
one LR202NPP
one 949100-3820/B382 AB
for the front i used a pair of:
LR201NPP
