Last night I replaced a very leaky valve cover gasket on Linda's Aveo. I changed the serpentine belt also.

I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to change the belt. Remove a little access panel in the wheelwell, put a wrench on the idler pulley and slacken and remove the belt. Put the new one on before you forget how it fits, replace the panel and you're done. Including jacking the front end up it only took about 20 minutes. Much better than the old style V belts.

The gasket was easy enough. It leaked terribly. The spark plug holes were filled with oil almost to the top of the plugs! Gross!

To get it out I removed the plugs, let the oil drain into the cylinder. Then a solvent soaked rag to clean out the openings, cleaned and reinstalled the plugs. Some smoke on startup I'll tell you what but otherwise an effective technique.

I was surprised the OEM valve cover gasket was so badly degraded.

Took 2 hours total. She brought pizza and beer. I had a Blue Moon. Very nice.

Blue Moon is an appropraite reward.

Was the pizza from your favourite Italian place?

When you say slacken the idler, was it just a matter of moving it against spring tension, or did you actually need to loosen a bolt? If so, I've never seen that on a tensioner.

Yes, Linda knows where to get my pizza from! She's basically a perfect girl :-). Yes, I just rotated that main bolts on the idler pulley with a wrench, and it slackens against it's spring tension.

I have found some vehicle to be pretty easy to work on. The town and country has quite a bit of room around the engine. I can even get to the back plugs.

Haven't done anything, but change oil on the corolla. Boring toyotas.

Aren't those tensioners the best invention? It makes serpentine belt changes a piece of cake. I usually draw a little map of the belt routing before I tear into it.

How many miles on it now? Is it time for a timing belt?

Corolla has a chain.:yay: It was a big selling point for me. Also it just turned 100K. At the current rate it should have about 200K when Lily is old enough to drive it.

That Corolla will likely be boring for a long time.

Are there moving parts in a Corolla or are they sealed at the factory?

Need to check, but that would required an unscheduled hood opening. I only open it every 5K.
