Zongshen 169FMM oil change

I'm planning on changing my bikes oil today. Can anyone please tell me what the approximate oil capacity is on this engine(169 FMM) and also what you guys think about Castrol power1 10W 50 synthetic oil(this the oil that i'm planning to use from now on.

according to my manual, the 233ccm engine needs 0,8 Liters of Oil. I use the 10w50 castrol as well and my mechanic told me its one of the best oils for this engine so i believe him

@migu Thanks for the advice:tup:. I drained the old oil and put in the new oil(i see it has a reddish colour to it). You won't believe all the crap that came out with the old oil:hmm:. My engine took about 900ml of new oil. thanks for the advice again! She's already purring like a kitten...:)

I have a TMEC enduro that uses the 196.4cc Zongshen 167 FML engine, and it specifies 1 liter of 15 w 40 (must be common in China), but I use 1 L of 10 w 40 4 stroke oil since a few brands actually sell it by the liter here in the US (vs. the more common quart). But, like I said, it states it in the owner's manual and the specification plate attached to my bike, but I could not speak for the 169 FMM engine.

Okay, just re-read this and saw your manual for this engine states .8 L. By the way, how long did you wait before starting to use synthetic (i.e. how many oil changes from new, or did you use it from new)?

My Bashan Bandit uses the 169FMM engine.

My Manual states .9L, but just below the cap on the engine it says 1.1L and I found it listed that way in another location.

I started with .9L turned it over for 2-3 minutes, and it was not enough oil. I added a small amount about 3 more times, running in between to check the level.

I did not measure the "extra" over .9L (which I did carefully measure) but I suspect that .2L is about right. I am going to start next time putting in just over one liter and see where I land on the guage.

also I took the advice of WeldanGrind and Spud, and use 15w40.

My Manual also happens to state 15w40 as the preferred oil. And it DOES specify that that is SAE 15w40.

Engine seems to love it.

@culcune- this is the first oil change i'm doing, bike only done 490km, figured i'd give her synthetic oil from the start and see if she likes it or not!?

@HailingFromCork- it seems that the engine takes plus or minus 0.9L of oil, started her up after the oil change and it seems like the oil level stays on the full mark. I did not receive a manual with my bike>:(.

I'll ride her a bit and see what happens, i can't see that synthetic oil can be bad for an engine, can it? I remember when i bought the bike, the sales guy said that they only put in Castrol GTX 20W 50 :hmm:

20W50 would be suitable in very hot weather, and 10W40 is good if it is cold. I use 15W40 diesel oil all year, and I don't bother with synthetics anymore. Synthetics certainly are not bad, but the cost difference isn't worth it, considering that I change oil at regular intervals.

Yes that makes sense to me, but what about 10W50? So its good if it's very cold and good if the weather turns very hot?
Where i live, we experience sometimes freezing weather at night going right up to 28*C during daytime.(this is winter time):hmm:
That is why i decided to go with synthetic oil. The previous bike i had also used 20W50 oil, but during summertime (i'm talking 34*C during daytime):grr:it seemed as if the oil didn't protect the engine as it should have, it had the consistency of cooking oil after about 1000km of riding.

I don't recall ever seeing 10W50 at the local auto parts store or motorcycle shop. That said, you should check the label to ensure that the oil you choose is not the energy conserving type, or the wet clutch might slip.

I use 15W40 all year, because the coldest it gets here is around 0C and the hottest is about 35C. I definitely change oil every 1000km.

Shell Rimula is a varient of Shell Rotella motor oil. ;)

Shell Rotella is primarly sold in North America, and Shell Rimula is primarily sold elsewhere. ;)

Many motorcycle riders use Shell Rotella/Rimula with very good results. :) Indeed, any good, 15W/40 motor oil will perform well for motorcycle owners. I personally use Mobil DelVac 15W/40 motor oil in all my motorcycles. :tup: You might enjoy reading the following articles on motorcycle oil. ;)
