View Full Version : Question About Rolling Through Canada

I'm taking two weeks vacation soon to see my kids in Maine. It has always been a nicer and shorter drive to run through Ontario and Quebec than IN, OH, PA, NY, VT, and NH.
This trip, I am hauling some lawn and garden equipment to the kids and was wondering if this would cause me any 'import/export" issues. Would it be better to take the soul sucking drive through the US to Maine and return home through the Great White North empty?
BTW, I may be picking a project in Montreal.

I don't think you will have a problem as long as you reenter the US with the same stuff. Tractor buddies attend events across borders and do not have a problem. Take pictures of the trailer load in the US or at the border on your phone.

It's probably a non-issue.
That said, is it difficult to bring a project bike back across the border? For us to bring a running vehicle into Canada, it takes 72 hours for the US side to run the VIN, and we pay a fee (I think it's $200), which includes an inspection. The vehicle must pass inspection within 30 days, or it goes back.
Non-running vehicles fall under a different category, and I think they're on a case-by-case basis.
Perhaps you'd care to start the process in advance, so that you have no surprises when you bring your project into the US.

Another thought: we have a border crossing that is just 30 blocks from our house, and we frequently see travellers that are heading to Alaska. I know in that case, they're allowed to bring guns and medical weed, since weed is legal in WA.
You should certainly be able to transport lawn and garden stuff to Maine.
Have a big bowl of clam chowdah for me.

I have friends that just travelled to Alaska too. They took a trailer load of stuff with for their daughter.
Calling the Border people should get you some answers.

Re:The project. A 1980 something Velosolex motorized bicycle. Not sure it even has a VIN. The young man who has it, has told me over the years how much he hates it. Runs when it wants, which is rarely. Stinks, smokes, spits oil out the exhaust. He recently got his first car and has just restored a 1964 Sears Allstate(Vespa)and is thinking of getting rid of the Velosolex. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A9loSoleX
And I raised my freaking hand.:ohno:

Scratch the Solex project.
I told the kid I was getting it from not to hold it if someone was willing to offer up more cash for it. Someone did. Probably a blessing in disguise.

Thanks, Kato. Plans have changed, though. Running through empty on the return trip.

The document that Kato found will be useful for taking stuff to Maine.

One more drawn out question.
I've been going to Canada, on and off, since 1970, when I went on great fishing trip with my Dad and our neighbor. The trip was for making it through grade school without getting kicked out or held back.
Anyway, while picking up groceries in Sioux Lookout, ONT, we came across a tin of Nabob Strawberry Preserves. It was wonderful stuff. It made burnt camp toast, inch thick pancakes, and pretty much everything our neighbor cooked, more palatable. So, my question is, can I still get it?

Sorry, Nabob is all about coffee now.

Back home after a marathon 18 hour drive yesterday. We ended up not going through Canada at all. Our new Vet wasn't sure the paperwork she made out for our pooch was correct, so we nixed that route altogether.
Had a nice time in Maine, all the same.
Parked with the big boys.

Typical campsite. This was outside Eire, PA.

Tried a very strong beer. Found it best for putting out campfires.

The dog even enjoyed his vacation.

And, I got to meet a fellow CX'er that lives near my kid. My wife has no room to complain. I have one CX, he has 10, including a Turbo. No pics of the bikes, but I did buy this stuff from him cheap.

I will now spend the rest of the day in a vegetative state.

Kato-Trying to hunt down Shoei #103 keys. cyclewearables.com lists them for $9 but their website seems a bit tricky to navigate. Anyone ever use them?
Put more miles on the truck since March than my FIL did in the four years he owned it. And most of those were in the last two weeks.
Very comfortable and roomy. Nice to be able to seat three in the back seat and not have knees in my back.
Mileage was to be expected. Averaged about 16.5mpg while pulling the trailer at 70mph. Which is about what the Wrangler gets without pulling a trailer at 55. Mileage dropped to about 14.5 on the hilly back roads. I'd never attempt that 18 hour drive in the Wrangler.
Spud-Thanks. It was a good time although my granddaughter wore me out.

I get a pretty consistent 17mpg in my work truck. Mostly rural driving.
Never been to cyclewearables.

Good score on the CX bags.
Love your trailer! I bet it's easy to pull and set up.
You need a turbo.

They were just sitting there and said "Buy Me". That trunk will hold two full face helmets. Leaving the brake light on the trunk and thinking of wiring a flasher relay in series with it for a flashing rear brake light. It does look like I will lose my rear turn signals to mount the bags, which explains the amber lights on the back. It looks like they will clean up well, but will probably get a coat of paint anyway.
We like the trailer but I think there may be a slightly larger one in our future or we are going to redo the floor plan in this one for a tad more room.
My wife would probably have me certified if I brought home a Turbo, especially since I went and rattled off the specs to her.

I never thought it would be so tiring. Gree(Grandma)just sits and reads with her. I have to do 'stuff'. Took her fishing, which was interesting. Drove her around on Daddys new garden tractor and let her steer a few times(scary). Go with her to find rocks and shells(I swear she can smell mica). Add in that when I'm on vacation I go to a sunset/sunrise sleep schedule, I get worn out.
