Riding a Puzey :)

Today I've finally gotten around to snap some pictures of what I got myself some weeks ago.

This must be the mother of all exotics - a South-African brand, made in China, and is called Puzey. Model is XTR4:

It's got a Loncin 300cc engine, which is supposed to be based on KLX300. So much I can confirm that it uses KLX300 oil filter:

So far I can only say positive things about the bike. It doesn't show many "Chinese" features. On the contrary, there are many CNC parts on it, for example:

Suspension is fully adjustable, and there's even a patented system for lowering the rear end (I haven't played with that yet):

It comes with a 36mm flat-side Koso carb, which is nice (for me at least ;)):

One of the bugs is that the speedo is basically useless as the numbers it shows are more close to random, than to actual speed:

I got the bike cheap, as it was a leftover, showroom unit at a UK importer. I paid 1000GBP for it (I'll leave the currency exchange to you). There are some "marks" of that it has sat for a while, like the stickers are a bit dark and peeling along the edges. There are some small bits of rust on some nuts and bolts, but nothing I can't live with.

Initially the bike came with a 14-52 sprockets, which was way too low gearing. I tried going to 14-46, but it was still low, so now I'm on 14-38 and it's about OK.

Overall I have to say I'm MORE than pleasantly surprised with what I got. As Top Gear would say, "It's a good bike. Without the words "for the money". It's a good bike, full stop."

Quality and performance is much better compared to my wife's Skyteam for example. And both bikes were manufactured in 2011! I can only hope that Puzey has raised their quality since then, so the new bikes must be even better.


Finally, I guess it's time I admit I'm all Chinese these days :D:

Lovely bike! I especially admire the TIG welding on the swingarm, near the adjusters.

Is there a designation on the motor, perhaps near the shifter? That's a new design to me.

You have an impressive China stable! Is that a 140cc pit bike?

Engine code is LL178MN. It's liquid cooled, and the bike has a radiator fan as a standard too (I think KTM charge extra for that?).

Indeed all welds look good and as they should be. Bolts are also not of the greenish-dark-gray colour, but zinc coated and seem more solid and durable. Time will tell if the threads will shred.

Plastics are flexible, rather than brittle.

The handlebar is "fat", i.e. 1 inch. I already managed to drop it from the side stand and it only wrinkled the coating on the inner bend where it flexed a bit. The front brake lever is of the correct length now too :D:D:D

All in all, if you don't know it's Chinese you'd have to look a bit deeper to find evidence. Two of the giveaways are the kick starter and oil filling cap. They seem way shiny and "cheesy" and not quite in tune with the rest of the details on the bike. I know I sound like bragging, but credit should be given when due, and Puzey so far get mine. Long-term durability is yet to be seen.

As for the pit bike, yep, it's 140cc. And it's surprisingly perky while hauling my 200+ -pound a$$ around! The only remark about it is that neutral gear is at the very bottom, so if you don't count precisely while downshifting, all you get is high engine revs when actually you're in desperate need for propulsion :D

I can relate. My Kinroad is 5 down, neutral at the top. Overcoming years of 1 down, 4 up shifting is going to be fun. Feels weird to toe-up downshift while coming to a stop. It's backwards. I'd like to add a heal shifter to the shift lever so I could tap down, on the heal part, for downshifts. Doesn't look like it'll fit too easily.

As stated on mychinamoto--I like the Puzey bikes. We had them available in the US as Pitster Pro in 250cc form; in the UK, they were rebadged as CCM bikes, as well as apparently Puzeys!

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm thinking that an XR200 six-speed gear cluster would drop in.

The model number on the VIN plate was something like YF300 indeed. The engine is fine (for now).
