My friend Darren dropped by to work on a carb, and he was riding his latest acquisition, a Honda XR650L. He let me take it for a rip, and it's a lovely machine. The only adjustment I'd make is to the brake pedal, which sat a little high for me.

He has a plastic tank that came with the bike, but he hasn't installed it yet. I'm going to point him towards Spud's awesome XR threads.

Nice looking XR! Yup, Spud's done a lot of the legwork on making the XR a good performing reliable long distance dual sport. I love what he's done with his.

The knowledge base here is great, and not just for chinese bikes, all bikes in general :).

You're right, Stew. The knowledge base and comradery is the reason I love hanging out in this shop. I learn something new every day here.

Nice XR! Is that a 4" muffler tip? :wtf:

I had a KLR650 for many years... solidified my love for dual-sports.

Cheers!

He will, considering I've shared your threads with him. He's already concerned about overheating.

It's a heat shield that the PO fabricated for the Supertrapp. Without it, the muffler will melt the rear fender. We have some ideas about a better looking solution, but he'd be grateful for suggestions.

Personally, I prefer the quiet operation of the stock muffler, which only weighs about 2 pounds more than any aftermarket muffler. ;) You should be able to find a good deal on a stock muffler by searching eBay. :)

I'll mention that to him. Perhaps his overheating concerns stem from the Supertrapp, if the carb wasn't jetted accordingly.
