As per SpudRider:

"Do you have a size 3.00-17 rim? If so, the 4.60-17 tire will not fit well, since it is designed for 2.15-17 rim. If this is the case, I suggest you look for a size 5.10-17, Shinko 244 tire.

If you wish, start a new thread on this topic. Post the size of your rim, and I will suggest a variety of tires which will perform even better in muddy conditions. You don't travel much at high speeds, do you?"

I have a 3.50 - 17 rim with the 140/80-17 tire now. I located a 2.50 rim to fit the 4.60-17 Sinko SR244. I can not locate a 2.15 rim. Again, my availability to selection or options is very limited.

I can not locate a 5.10 -17, have tried; remember I live in a Third World Country and then I live on a Third World Island in a Third World Country... :D

"I will suggest a variety of tires which will perform even better in muddy conditions."

My riding conditions very all the time. It's the rainy season now but half the year it's the dry season. I go from high speed black top/concrete surface to dirt, gravel, rocks, mud, river crossing all in one ride. Oh, and rains too.

"You don't travel much at high speeds, do you?"

I'm a bad boy, a bad, bad boy... I travel as fast as I can (safely) whenever I can. I run 80, 90 120 KM all the time on the black top and 60+ on the dirty parts. I believe God made "full throttle" for a reason :lmao:

So I'll run 60 to 100 Km blacktop or as fast as I can, hit the dirty stuff and still go as fast as I can. I'm only 62, someday I'll grow up but not tomorrow!!! :lmao:, :lmao:, :lmao:

So with my very "Dual Sport" riding conditions and the weather conditions I need and want a dual sport compromise tire combo. The big lugs of "Off Road" tires or good mudders will not meet the other changing daily conditions. It can be sunny or raining when I leave and can change to rainy or sunny during the ride.

Suggestions are more than welcome...

Pic 1) My OEM tire and why I changed. This is after a short ride through the forest and mud not far from my house. After 100 feet of hard pack dirt and then 100 feet of cement drive way, still packed.

Pic 2) The new Samsun 140/80-17. The tread is much deeper.

Pic 3) the new tire after the same forest/mud ride, it cleaned it's self of the mud a lot more than OEM.

Pic 4) The new tire after a very tough ride in some very sticky and gooey mud, nasty stuff.

I like the performance of the new tread, it's ok but the size is just way too high/tall. My short legs have a hard time getting my feet to the ground. :)

Yes, build a wheel with the 2.50-17 rim, and you can install the Shinko 244 tire in size 4.60-17. I build a rear wheel with a 2.50-17 rim, which is discussed in the following thread. :)

After I wear out my Shinko 244 tire in size 5.10-17, I will also switch to the Shinko 244 tire in size 4.60-17. :) The size 2.50-17 rim will accommodate both tires, unlike the very wide, 3.50-17 rim you now have installed. ;)

I have been looking at this tire info and comparing the sizes.

When I went from the stock 130/90-15 to the 140/80-17 I got 1.61 inches larger diam., this is aprox. 0.805 taller on the ground (height increase), that's a big difference, more than I like.

If I go with the Sinko SR244 in 4.60 – 17, I'll have aprox. .55 overall diam. increase or about 0.275 taller on the ground (height increase), I think this is better for me.

Tire Size Rim Diam Width

4.60-17 2.15 24.76 4.37

The following info from:

Well crumbs... I had that last post all formatted nicely with sufficient spacing between the info and apparently this program doesn't like me doing that, just kind of mixed the info up... RATS. :wtf:

Spud, I got this info from Shinko site:
http://www.shinkotireusa.com/tire/244-series

Tire Size: 5.10-17, Overall Diam. inches: 25.63, Overall Width inches: 5.08.

This is almost as tall as my 140/80-17 at 25.82. The more I look at these numbers the more I'm convinced the 4.60 - 17 is better.

I'm sure with the 4.60 and a 13 C/S matched up with the 45 rear sprocket, I should be just about ideal for my riding conditions.

Thanks for all your help on this and other aspects of Zonging...

Yes, all your Shinko tire data is correct. :)

First lace the 2.50-17 rim to your rear hub. The size 4.60-17 tire will not mount properly on your current, 3.50-17 rim. ;)

After you lace the narrower rim, I'm sure the Shinko 244, size 4.60-17 tire will suit you well. I am switching to this tire when my Shinko 244, size 5.10-17 tire finally wears out. However, it is still performing well, and has sufficient tread left after 12,500 miles of riding.

Well darn, I finally located a Shinko SR 244 in 4.60 -17 but the shop selling says they don't have a tube :hmm:.

I think the tube in my 140/80/17 on the bike now may be too big, anyone know what size tube I should be looking for?

Several sizes of inner tubes will work with the 4.60-17 tire.

4.60-17
5.10-17
4.50/5.10-17
110/100-17

Some Kawasaki KLR650 owners even use heavy duty, 100/100-18 inner tubes.

Thanks SpudRider, I'm headed to the city this morning and will check with a few shops and see what I can find.
