82 mpg!!!

So here a few weeks ago I swapped out the front sprocket on my
CRF230L from a 13T front sprocket to a 15T front sprocket.
Made a huge difference. More " treatable " as they say.
What I did NOT expect was the 10+ MPG gain in fuel economy.
I run the numbers 3 times.
78 miles driven, 0.95 gal put back in. that was full to the bottom rim
of the filler neck. Exact same place I always stop it at.
Even if I could have squeezed that last 0.05 gal in there, that still would have
been 78 MPG, still way up from what it had been prior to sprocket change!

Does the older 230L have to be re-programed when you change sprockets?

When I was doing research on the 250L (was going to buy a 230L or 250L for the Mrs. so I was researching them), I read that even doing something like changing the front and rear sprockets will change the Speedo/Mileage readings and you will need to buy a kit to re-program into the correct Speedo/Mileage.

I was just wondering if the 15t sprocket somehow changed your speedo/mileage readings (like they would on the new 250L) giving you that huge boost in MPG ?

if the speedo sensor is internal to the transmission then his odometer would actually read fewer miles than he traveled after the gear change he did. which would only make his MPG go up more once corrected.

You are correct in tat statement, however, the Honda CRF230L gets it's speedometer & odometer readings off of the front wheel.

NOPE!!! The good 'Ol 230's are all OLD SCHOOL !!!! :tup:
Carbureted, so no stupid EFI junk to deal with, and the Speedo drives from the front wheel.

The 230L, due to it's lighter weight, just dang near runs with the larger taller much heavier 250L. And being air cooled with a carb, has the potential to be more reliable. BUT, the CBR250L's have so far proven to be stove bolt reliable, , , , soooooooooooo, , , , , as far as true real world reliability goes, , , ---- shrugs ------
My thinking is this: I CAN rebuild a carb. I can NOT wave a wand and somehow make that magical brain box tell the EFI fuel injector to fire, OR rebuild a fuel injector.
The little 230's are awesome bikes. Before you buy one over the other, I suggest you check out Woodsmans vlog over on you tube. Great guy, very down to earth, and owns BOTH a 230 and a 250 CRF.
