I'm looking to get a skid plate bolted to the Hawk and I was looking for suggestions. I can weld and bend but a bolt on is always the best route. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Wish you lived close to me. You could bring your Bike over to my Shop and we could get that Skid Plate put on. I have all kinds of stuff laying around we could use to put it on.

I would be very careful with the design of a skid-plate. There is only 1 1/4 quarts of oil in that engine, it needs all the cooling from the airflow it can get. Most people think of these engines as air-cooled. Actually the oil does around half of the cooling, then the oil is cooled by air passing over and around the cases. It is a wet sump engine, remember.

Interesting idea making a skid plate out of HDPE sheet, or plastic cutting board. I can't find the link, but recall a guy using a black HDPE cutting board, skid plate looked nice!

The Honda XR200R skid plate would be a good choice. It's aluminum, full of cooling holes and very light. It bolts to the bottom of the motor.

That assumes you have no cradle under the motor.

be sure to cut some holes in it for air flow.

Don't forget the "Bottle Opener" cutout on each side of the skid plate/bike too... never know when a bottle needs to be opened after all :hehe:

Or, rust distressed and clear coat? Not.
Just wondering out loud. Contrasting color. Arctic silver metallic
Everything gets painted this color around here, got lots of the stuff (actually brighter metallic finish than pic shows)

I think it looks great unpainted. Polish it up a bit and clear coat it.

I will think about that.

I used a 4.5 cutting disc and notched about 40% of the breaks, then I folded them by hand.

Unpainted screen and black will look good too, I think.

:lmao:seems like that screen will clog almost instantly off road.
Most of my riding is on road, the skid plate is more there to make the bike look tougher than it is, or like a sheep in wolf's clothing. If I was to to use the bike off road I will remove the screen,it's only held by 9 magnets. Thanks Kohburn.

I like the magnet idea!
Have you considered the HF powder coating setup? I bet that skid plate would live a long time if it was powder coated.
chuck
08-23-2016, 12:51 PM
I am big fan of HF,I can powder coated black and throw it in the oven. The earth magnets are cheap and hold tight.

ok Chuck you have inspired me. I think I will weld up my own. I spent 9 hours today welding up a ping pomg ball blowing machine for a mini trade show at work and am Arbor for my wife. I will now weld something for me.

I made a lottery ball machine. there is a fan that blows different color ping pong balls all around and the players try to catcher certain color balls.
The Arbor thingy is to hold potted, plants.... OK you guys from Colorado, reread that last sentence. I said Potted plants.... not Pot plants. :)

Chuck, I really like the retaining bracket at the top. Also, I admire the job you did of breaking the sheet metal. Nice job.
chuck

Thanks a lot Weldangrind. The retaining looking bracket is actually there to conceal the distortion of the metal when I welded the actual bracket.

yes i have one on mine. the cut out for draining the oil doesent line up right, but otherwise it fits perfectly. i cut about an inch more out of that cutaway to get the oil to drain without catching the stream on the plate.
it has a great look.
