Battery Recommendations?

So I woke up today to find myself a dead battery (sigh) it lasted me about 3 years so i can't complain. Now it's time to buy a new one. Anyone order theirs online? I've been looking all over and i'm overwhelmed by the amount of choices. My owner manual recommends 12v at 4 or 5 ah. Can I get a higher ah? like a 12v 10ah? I like having the security on those cold winter days.

The ah reference can be interpreted as volume. As you look at the box that the battery fits in, you can see that capacity is limited to what fits in the space. If a 5ah battery is a snug fit in the box, you can't fit anything larger. That mostly applies to lead acid batteries.


These are very generalized comments, as the fancier LiFePO4 batteries can spin the motor over faster despite a smaller package. They are much more expensive and mustn't be allowed to run low.


My favourite is the BikeMaster Platinum II MS12-4L-A AGM battery. It is a good balance between cost, capacity and longevity. It is available from several sources, and I either bought mine at Rocky Mountain or Bike Bandit (can't recall which). That was in 2013, and it is still going strong. AGM is nice because it doesn't spill and rust the frame and battery box.

I know I can fit a decent size battery, it just cant be tall. it has to be a rectangle like the one you recommended. The one I have installed now barely fits. I actually might consider it too small. that's why I was wondering if the ah will affect the system in anyway (in a negative way)

My local WalMarts now have a very good selection of AGM small engine batteries. Can't beat the convenience, cost and easy return policy if there is a problem. Take your battery box dimensions to the store with you and purchase the largest battery that will fit your box. You also need to make sure the positive negative terminals are on matching sides of the batteries.

The XT660 got 8 years out of the Yuasa..
the TTR250 got 6 years out of the Yuasa..
Yuasa ain't cheap but they are possably best
of the AGM battreys...
Prob why Yamaha use Yuasa as standard...

Try t-motorsports gel-cell batteries. Had one that lasted through two TMEC 200 enduros. I let the bike sit for several months, and finally, after two or so years, corrosion got to where the wires bolt on, rendering the battery useless. I knew I should have disconnected the battery!

The catch is that you have to measure yours, and see if they fit within the confines of the replacement battery, which was what I did. The advantage of the gel-filled battery was that they shipped it complete, ready to go (of course, you want to put it on a trickle charger, first), since you don't have to squeeze in the acid, although they do carry acid-filled ones, too.

Thank you so much for the info! It's so hard to find any info on my motorcycle. Yes it is a XingFu, It's from 2001 (according to my title). If you have any more info I would greatly appreciate it. I can't find a wiring diagram anywhere. whoever had this bike before me did an awful job taking care of it. They rewired it all wrong and I have slowly put it back together.

Rewire is easier if divide in groups: E-start | IGN | Signal | Charging & lights (front/ rear)

Red: battery's + to lock s/w
Pink: Stator to rec/reg
Blue: hi-beam
Green: - & ground
Black: the + after lock s/w
White: Charging output, Lo-beam
Yellow: Headlight's power source (AC headlight / half-wave system mostly) | charging input (rec)
Grey: flasher to indicating s/w
Orange: Indicating s/w to LEFT's
Sky blue:Indicating s/w to RIGHT's
light brown: lights in the Gauge
Brown/white: front position light
Light green horn to it's switch
Red / white: rectifier output (Voltage sampling wire in 5-wire rec...)

black / white: CDI to lock switch (IGN OFF) ***often means grounded/- ***
blue / white: Trigger signal (Blue / yellow...)
Orange / White: left indicator inside gauge
Blue / white: right indicator inside gauge
Yellow / white: fuel level gauge to float s/w

That is what I use. The battery was $69.18 and the charger was $29.11 and I also got a small discount when I purchased them together. The battery was smaller that the stock battery but came with foam blocks and tape on one side to make it snug.

The battery was smaller that the stock battery but came with foam blocks and tape on one side to make it snug.

The foam blocks wasn't enough for our bike/battery box design... so I just cut a small piece off a "Pool Noodle" to make a nice and snug fitting "Foam Spacer" for the Lithium battery on our Bashan :hehe:

With the battery a exhaust changes I can lift the back of my Hawk off the ground and I am not a big guy. I only weigh about 45 pounds more than Az.
