View Full Version : HAWK Rear Spoke Length? What to Buy?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew the right measurement of the HAWK's rear spokes? I'm down 2 spokes already and I cant figure out Buchanan's list of their spokes, they list them by gauge size and I have no clue what to order. I would prefer to buy a few individual spokes rather than spend $30-50 on a whole set.

Link:
http://www.buchananspokes.com/products/individual_stainless_steel_spokes.asp

MotoCheez did a vid on the rear spokes and gave a link but the ebay link says they are 16" but then also says they are 162mm. They have them as a whole set and i don't want to buy a whole set when im not even sure if they are saying they are 16in or 162mm
(Kinda holding out on the eBay link as a last resort)

Here's that Link:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/131898846804?rmvSB=true

Buchanan:
10872

eBay:
10873
10874

Thanks in advance.

Same here! Corn stalks can play hell on spokes. I kept all the straight spokes off my taco'd front wheel, so I have spares for it. :lmao:

Sorry guys, Haven't gotten any help yet... The eBay ones might be the right ones because Motocheez said he bought them but im not sure and not wealthy enough to risk the money lol

I wonder if the spokes for tt250 would work? http://www.cscmotorcycles.com/TT250-OEM-SPOKEREARWHEEL-p/zt26-114.htm Can one of the TT250 guys verify the length and diameter?

You know what, that might work. It says the tt250 has an 18in rim so i would think the spokes would be about the same. That might be the solution.

No, TT250 spokes do not work on a Hawk...... different sized hubs.

how bout taking one off the bike and measuring it. may need to google where to measure to on the spoke and get gauge. if your already down two i would get a heavier gauge spoke.

Even with the length (162mm) I cant figure out where to buy or order one/some. Like said, buchanan doesnt just list "162 mm spokes, click here" they have a whole bunch of numbers and gauge sizes i have no idea what would work for the HAWK. Even with the eBay one saying they were 162mm someone confirmed that they are in fact the wrong ones.

So we are trying to get info about what would work, and where we could get them, from someone who knows more about spokes or dirt bikes in general.

it looks that it might actually be 4mm in diameter. If you found some let me know. Im down THREE SPOKES now... and am about ready to replace all of them..

Tip is missing.. not sure exactly where you are suppose to measure from but I measured all of what I have of the spoke

Yea, all 3 have broken the same way. Though I have almost 6000 miles on my hawk and have taken it through some rough terrains and trails. Which is probably why they have been popping off, but the FRONT spokes have been no problem at all.

over tightened maybe???? or unevenly tightened around the rim. do they all sing the same note when plinked? ive ridden some hellasious trails covered with 12" boulders and havent had a problem yet.

Spokes usually break because they are loose or over tight, or the spoke or spokes opposite of them are loose/tight. Plus, once one spoke goes, it increases the load on the other spokes and increases their chance of breaking too.

As far as ordering from Aliexpress, I have had nothing but good luck so far, but yes the shipping time can be a bit tedious sometimes. I usually get my stuff within 2 weeks of placing my order.

If you get these and they do work, definitely report back please. I would love to buy a spoke set for the front and rear to keep as spares just in case. Normally I would go the Buchanan's route, but custom spoke sets from them are upwards of $100+ usually.

Well ive only checked them every so often, from stock, and very slight tightened any that were a little loose. One day i noticed one broke and checked the rest and they seemed okay. Then another one and then just the other day with very little riding in between, i saw another broken one.

But to be honest i have taken my hawk off some ramps and caught a little air a few times and the HAWK hits down pretty hard. I usually keep it within its suspension's limits but i didnt think about how the rims/spokes would take it. Also i wheelie the sh*t out of my hawk and maybe I just put too much abuse on that back rim for this $1000 bike to handle. IDK.

Speedometer is but not very accurate. The digital is accurate. Plus you have a tachometer. Odometer is in kilometers.

Hey man! yes i do! BUT I just ordered a full set from a website that we SUSPECT MIGHT be the right size spokes. (not 100% sure though). If you're willing to part with some of yours, and you could just save 4 of them for me (In case the ones I ordered do not fit) I would be extremely grateful! and i'd be willing to buy them from you or cover shipping.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/GY-CQR-125CC-150cc-200cc-250cc-18-rear-wheel-spokes-zongshen-jialing-loncin-198mm-motorcycle-accessories/32281989453.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.SYLR5Q

took about 20 days to get them to me.

But anyways they look to be an exact match, the threads fit on the nipples that came with the hawk (Though the spokes came with there own nipples).

The only thing I have to say is that I haven't put them on yet (Just got them today) also because ill have to take the whole wheel off and looks like ill also have to either remove the sprocket or brake rotor in order to get the spokes through. and the weather sucks and probably will continue to suck so IDK when I'll decide to do it since I don't plan on riding too much anytime soon.

So i cant tell if the angle or bend is correct but they LOOK to be a good fit.

If anyone wants to order them and put them on and let us know, otherwise ill have to get back to you guys on them.

But again, they look to be the right spokes for the job.

ya i ended up having to replace the entire front rim of my HAWK (after an accident:ohno:). The only one I could find was $135, But i looked at a positive as having a spare hub and spare spokes for the front rim (Tho those have given me no troubles at all.. so far...)

Hey guys i just put the aliexpress spokes on and they all fit just fine. Haven't rode yet but i think they'll be okay.

I was lucky that all 3 spokes that broke were on the rotor side ALSO on the outside of the hub, that way I didn't have to take the tire off. I just took that caliper and rotor off and worked around the rotor. Took me about 2 hours to do 3 spokes. I had to take off other spokes to work the spokes around other spokes to have them in the right places (pain in the ass) but not too bad.

Idk what to do if the spoke had to be inserted on the inside of the hub OR if they were on the SPROCKET side.
I haven't changed my rear sprocket but i have heard its a bit of a challenge to take off and have heard A LOT of guys have had issues with the sprocket coming off, while riding, after changing it.

Either way, the aliexpress spokes work:

Many people have had the factory sprocket come off too.

poor cush drive stud fitment in the hub, loose or poorly tightened sprocket nuts, and play between the sprocket and the snap ring are all culprits. I had a whole thread dealing with it.
