Hey guys. I'm close to buying a new Hawk 250cc engine ($500) off txpowersports.com but wanted to first hear your guys opinion. Is there an option other than a stock engine?

Do you want another ohv CG250 aka stock style engine, or do you want something different? You could always install the OHC engine, ala CB250, or change out for the Loncin RE250, aka 166fmm, which has a gear driven counter balancer and a 6 spd trans at the loss of 6cc. Would require a little work in terms of custom front motor mount brackets, but will otherwise fit.

Thanks for the reply! I would prefer to keep it simple.

I haven't looked for an engine for years on ebay, but back then it seemed like you could save $50, or more if you went with seller A or seller B. I am sure engines are not so easy to come by nowadays, so paying $500 for a replacement engine is probably par for the course. In theory I like Megadan's suggestions, but being at the skill level I am at, I would go with 'KIS'--keep it simple since the replacement is a direct fit.

Then go with the stock replacement engine, but maybe shop around. Txps would be my last resort.
The OHC motor would pretty much be a bolt in as long as it was non counter balanced.. About the only real advantage would be the ability to get different cams for it, and that only matters if you are a power crazed mad man like me.

When you say Killed your engine, What happened? Did you throw a rod through the case or just burnt a piston? If it's just a burnt piston or just lost compression it would be a whole lot cheaper to replace the piston, rings and cylinder for about $50-60.

To be honest with you, I'm not sure. I've never worked on my cars (other than basic oil change and maintenance) And this hawk was my forst motorcycle. One day I was leaving work and noticed it was leaking oil. I rode it home and the next morning their was a considerable amount of oil on the floor. I left the bike their for about almost 2 months before a mechanic saw it. The engine is locked. The kick start wont go down and the wheel wont budge when trying to push start it.
Some extra info. I changed the oil that it came with. And did a oil change when it hit 100 miles. After that, I did not do the break in correctly. I redline it a few times and was riding the hell out of it. Im not sure if this is related but, the chain came loose while doing a big acceleration a few days before it started leaking.

Is there an option other than a stock engine? If the problem is in the head, cylinder or piston, it is actually easier to re-build it than it is to switch to a new engine. BUT if the problem is within the cases, then you may well be better off switching engines if you have never split the cases before. On the third hand, with the help you can get around here, you could benefit by learning how to repair an engine from the ground up....ARH

The loss of oil is the part that concerns me, a new top end and cylinder is one thing but a broke case on top of that,
I might opt for a $500 motor too. Try and find out where that oil is coming from and was it ran with no oil very long?

If I were a betting man, I would say you cracked the case when you threw the chain. Best case scenario would be that you damaged a seal.
I didn't do a "proper" break in on my Hawk. In fact, I had wound my bike out quite a few times before the 100 mile mark. Just passed 2400 miles on it, and it still gives great compression with no funny noises.
What I am curious about is if it is the engine or the transmission side that locked up. If you remove the clutch basket you can try to spin just the engine over by hand. using the flywheel nut.

I agree with dan the man ,the case was probably the victim of the chain and your oil loss is due to the damage .Have you removed the spark plug and tried kicking it over or pushing it in gear ?is there any oil in it now ?i would remove the plug ,fill the cylinder with diesel or dexron ,and let it sit for a day or two ,then fill the tranny with some diesel fuel and try rocking it to free it up .If you get it free ,drain everything and kick it over a million and one times without the spark plug in it ,then fix the oil leak ,refill and enjoy .

Sounds like it was still new,, id be hard pressed to buy another just like it.
But I get it if your not inclined to do that kind of work,,
Mine has about 1700 miles now and weaps a bit of oil out the head gasket, but runs just fine. I put on the 520 chain and sprokets so not much chain clearance around that front sproket for the chain to clear if it falls off. I worry about that happening all the time, and check it often for allignment.
I have a couple big honda engines around here that id have to consider if it came to that.

What is your location, city and state if you're in the US. There may be a member close by that can help diagnose problems. I've done it for fellow forum members on other forums.

Does anyone have a link to replacement engines? I've looked around and, aside from smaller displacement engines, have only found TX power sports. I think it would bring Chinese bikes over the top if there was a good supply of these engines in the US.

I've tinkered my hawk up a bit. Carb pipe other stuff. At 50 to 62 it takes way to long to pass. It's always fun to have a loud chitchat with the other driver as you crawl by at wfo. I would speculate the cb250 or the ninja250 (around 4 bones used +shp) would fit with a bit off lightning glue but then that wobbly af front end needs to go. hmm just get something better.
