Damn stuck on the side of road now cause the hawk shut off. I was going about 62 when all of a sudden I hear this clank and the bike just died. Got off to look and I see my air hose that connects to my carb is off and the screw is missing. Only thing I can think is my engine sucked up the screw for my clamp. I’m pretty sure that’s what happened cause when I kick it over something’s rattling inside I can hear it. Either my screw or something broke off in it. At least I’ll have all weekend to figure it out. Damn>:(

You have the absolute worst luck of anybody I have ever known when it comes to a bike. If you didn't have bad luck, you would have no luck at all.
Thankfully the cylinder heads on these engines are pretty easy to remove. Hopefully the damage isn't too bad.

Man, That bike is jinxed. :ohno: You should be an expert on disassembling and assembling that engine by now. Hopefully there's no major damage. Hope for the best.

What are the chances of removing the top end off and pulling the screw out and it running fine or am I definitely gonna need a new cylinder head. Do I have to drain the oil to remove the top to get to the screw. Yeah bikes for sure jinxed.
JerryHawk250
06-15-2018, 03:35 PM
You can pull the head without draining the oil. You can check for piston or valve damage when you do that.

Guys are right...start with the easiest to get to up top and work your way down if need be....but seriously.... Damn!
Lit Hawk

So I pulled the top off as much as I could and the valves still look good I can see some scratches on cylinder wall. Did find small piece of metal in there. The clamp that held my air tube to carb wasn’t wanting to tighten because the hole the screw goes through on clamp started to stretch so I had a washer on screw, I’m thinking maybe that got sucked into engine I don’t think screw would make it through. I know it has to do with something with my air hose clamp because as soon as bike broke and I inspected first thing I noticed was my air hose off of carb. I left my bike at work I’m gonna pick up tomorrow and have to split the engine again. When I had the top off I cranked the kick start and my piston isn’t going up and down anymore. Sucks, I’ll open it up this weekend and post my results.

is there an intake hose from a crf 230 that works i thought i seen someone saying they were upgrading there intake hose ,mine was bent twisted couse the stock one has like 3 seperate gromets an they had it at the first one ,had to trim the hose to fit it to last one so it was not sticking way inside the box either ,or intake ,my friend who is real good with these engines ,wants to mod my box even more an put a different hose ,an i know his ideas are good ,he works on my camaro too,

Wow... I'm trying to figure out how a clamp on the outside of the air intake broke and made it inside your engine? your calmer than I'd be. Hats off to you brother and good luck.

That's me, and you have the wrong end of the intake. I have a CRF230F intake, aka "manifold" or "Carburetor Insulator Socket". In short, the bit that bolts to the head.

Thanks but mines still good just need a new clamp. Do you plan on doing something with the extra space now that you removed your air box? Why switch to a different filter? My experience with dirt bikes and those kind of air filters sucks because if it gets a little wet bike shuts down. I like the air box under the seat on the hawk cause I can get it wet and muddy and not have to worry to much about bike shutting off due to water getting on filter. No update on the bike yet it’s still at my job and my garage needs to be clean first before I start dismantling the engine. Gotta have a clean workspace. I’ll probably have it split by next weekend though.

Different strokes for different folks, I do not plan on ever getting into a position where I am worrying that water is going to be sucked into the carb. I just liked the idea of removing the extra weight and gaining the air flow.
Good luck with getting it going again.

Just my 2 cents, and personal experience, but I would tear that motor down fully. You definitely had some big chunks end up in bad places. Best to inspect everythinge

I got stuck at centrifugal oil filter again. Last time I split engine I stripped the screw and had to extract it and get an air impact screwdriver for the other screws. Now I was able to get one out but the other two are being stubborn so tomorrow I’m gonna go get a hammer impact screwdriver to get the other screws out or I’m gonna have to use extractor. That oil filter is a pain in the ass!!
So couldn’t split the engine but got a ton on crap out of it. Hopefully everything looks ok besides needing a new cylinder head? And new piston setup, does anyone know of an upgrade that’s tested and works I can get? Or do I got to go through txpowersports or RPS? So tempted to just throw in a new enginefrom txpowersports for $500 cause I’m scared of more problems down the road. Ahhh! On top of all this I was driving my wife’s scooter to work a lancer 150cc and that broke down on me. Sounds like starter was whirling but not clicking but it did sometimes after I tried kicking it over a couple times then would whirl again. Took spark plug off and felt for compression and it only pushed my finger like one time and would stop and start whirling again until I kicked it over then again little compression and then stop. Did some research and I need to check my valves someone said might be stuck open. So now I got a gy6 I need to learn about now. Don’t remind me please, no luck

Might be my lack of mechanical experience overall... But I'd personally just buy the new engine. Some things aren't right from factory and never will be. There's 2 hawks in my family. Mine has been riddled with issues. My father's has yet to have a single one. The bikes got ordered at the exact same time from the exact same distributor.
That motor has to come apart...
look at the bottom of the piston... that con rod
took a hell of a pounding...how will you ever know
if the little end and big end are still true with each other...

Good thing is when it died it just shut off no grinding or weird noises. Bad things I tried to crank it a couple times I should no better. After I reassembled from the last time after a couple days running it started making a noise like the tappets so I adjusted them and they were good should have known to open engine and check, to lazy I guess. Serves me right that’s twice for me bike was acting funny and I just ignored it and it turned into a problem.

This, this, this, this, this.
Chances are the connecting rod is bent, and if it took that kind of impact then the crankshaft center pin (where the bit end rides) is probably out of alignment with the counter weights and no longer true.
I like a challenge, but I also have the ability and patience to tackle that kind of engine work. In your case, assuming you need an entire rotating assembly, cylinder, and head you might end up spending the same as just buying a whole new engine. The heads have gone up in price, and the best I have seen puts them at $100, usually more. Figure at least another $250-300 for the jug, a piston, a rod and crank, seals, bearings, gaskets, and assuming nothing else got damaged you still might end up spending almost the same as you would on that new motor anyway.
Plus, there is the time factor. How much is your time worth to you?

I like to fix things. But if this engine was my engine I would get a new one. The price is right for the new one. Parts alone would be close to the cost of the new engine and their is the piece of mind involved. I would Keep the old one for parts. At least the trans and clutch are good for parts. The rest not so much.

Totally agree with everyone here, If you put a new top end on that its probably gonna run out of balance, shake more than normal and everything else will go south soon after and all that money and work will be a loss.
Take the $500 hit and get riding with a little peace of mind and less stress, now you have an extra clutch if you burn one up.

Megadan made a statement a while back about setting something up. We need to figure out how to set up a emergency fund just for these types of situations. Most of us on here bought cheap Chinese bikes for the simple reason that we are on a limited budgets and cannot afford the cost of the named brand bikes.

So thanks everyone for letting me know the best route to go. So a new engine it is, thing is I still got 3 more payments on this bike. Yep haven’t even had it for a year yet. So I was gonna wait until I paid it off then go through affirm again for a new engine. So I would never have thought of setting up a gofundme page but since someone suggested I went ahead and bit the bullet and set one up. I don’t expect much since I haven’t helped much on this sight mostly just gotten help. I would be forever grateful to this great community if this works and always pay back someone else in need.

You have contributed to this community. Just by you posting the issues you have had has more than likely helped someone else out with a similar problem. Most people will not post and just search for answers instead of asking.

You swapping an engine might give the next guy the courage to try it instead of just scrapping the bike. I've read and received more help on this page for a "cheap Chinese" bike then on one for the 1980s Kawasaki KZs, and there's a 100 of those guys for everyone one of us. Went camping this last week, tubing down the Guadalupe river. Had a blast with the family. Really needed a vacation but man am I exhausted, seems like I need a vacation from my vacation now:doh:So anyways an update, I ordered the engine on the 13th of July. A week later I called trying to get a tracking number and they said they’d call me back they had to look into it. Never got a call back so after 2 weeks I emailed them and got a response back saying “sorry I overlooked your order I’ll ship it out this week” ughh so annoying. So it came Thursday while I was out of town luckily my mother in law (who is currently drunkingly annoying the hell out of me while I’m trying to write this now>:(got to be nice though) is staying down the street and was able to get her to put it in my house so It wouldn’t get stolen. I got home yesterday night so today woke up put her together and just now getting back from taking her for a ride. Ahhh so great to be back on 2 wheels, I love it. Tomorrow I have all day to get it broken in. Couldn’t be any happier right now:clap:

Hey, does anybody know where I can find that digital gauge cluster for the Hawk 250? Also has anybody had any problems with oil bogging down the bike so bad it won’t run. I was thinking about putting a PCV on or just doing an aftermarket air filter. Let me know which would be better. I have a 2017 Hawk 250 with almost 300 miles on it now and it just started this oil issue.

For the Hawk digital clusters, check this thread...Matt is still waiting on a batch to ship, so he should have them in soon. See my signature for the link to email him to get on his order list...
http://www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=21763
As for the oil bogging down your bike...how much oil did you pour into the engine and which type did you use? Are you having problems with the crankcase burping oil into your air box? If your bike is bogging it could be carb-related...perhaps the engine is running too rich or too lean (most likely too lean).
I have a PCV thread going which shows some installation photos and has plenty of useful info (others have provided links to the type of valve you'll need)...
