I want to ride with my tools, and I want to be able to pick up milk when passing the store on the way home. Or tools and clothes when on a trip.
I'm having trouble deciding on what to use to carry stuff on my cb350 twin. The stock k4 rear rack is very rare. CB350 Four rack doesn't fit. A used k4 rack went on e-bay for $140, and they don't come up for sale much. :x The bike is short wheel to wheel and saddle bags might look kinda dumb. I'm thinking a seat bag? But I need ideas.
Would soft saddlebags look stupid?
How did you carry stuff on your cb?
Do you still have it laying around and want to sell it cheap?
I would have put this in the buy and sell forum, but as of yet I don't know what I need. :? , I'm so new :( .
If I see anything I will let yah know, though I haven't been really looking for mine yet, I've got a pickup to deal with first, and also my new lifan...
These are some cheap soft saddle bags I picked up, I intended to use them with my lifan, but I don't know for sure what I will do with them...

I'm not sure how they'd look on a cb350

Yep Jim.
I've seen that luggage, they can attach to their tail bag too. I think the tail and 2 saddlebags would look trick on a KLR or a bigger chinabike. The other reason I liked their bags was the shipping price. I can't get leather bags shipped to canada for under $40, even from just across the border. The Ebay store "candianleather" is 20 miles from me, in Ontario, they sell bags cheap, 35$. They still want to charge $40 for delivery. I'd go pick up a set if I knew they would look OK, but I've never seen a picture of a CB350 with hard or soft saddlebags. I think leather would look better, but really I have no clue. :?
If I just go with a tail bag strapped to my flat seat I've got a packsack that I can mod to fit for free. It's not a bad option, but I don't think it's the best option. :? There must be lots of members who rode cb's "back in the day." How did you folks carry your stuff?

To be honest, I think any of the older Japanese bikes look better with the nylon bags. Leave the leather to the HD crowd.

thanks Brother. 8)
Sounds stupid, but my mom hordes luggage. I sent her a pic of what I got and told her what I want. Ya I was thinking nylon too. I lost a bid for honda samsonite 70's hard sidebags. I would have started borrowing money to get them if I knew they would look good. I think they would have looked good, but I thought a solo seat would look good, and I was SOOOOooooo wrong
A rubberized nylon tail bag. I'm gonna try to mod it from a packsack so that the sholder straps tie together under the seat. Even if it's a temp solution, I should be able to find out if it will work for me. Does anyone have 12"? x 15'? x6"? tail bag that they can part with cheap? Ha, or even loan? I'm pretty sure I can mcGyver something.

Yo Bro,
Did you look on JCwhitneys site yet ? They have them for your year bike , you may not like thier price , but they do have some options for it too, backrest and all ?
Are you still trying to get this bike over to the Isle Of Man to do what you did to my Norton riders in 70's with your evil alcohol and your even evil-er Lady's of The Night ?
Let me guess , the luggage rack is for carrying more booze right , or is it for riding three up this time , with two extra girls I am sure to send to my riders Motel prior to the race !
Have you not shamed the Norton and Triumph riders enough with your puny little CB350 Honda , that your going over to do it agian arent you !
And now, with a luggage rack no less on the bike !
The humanity man ! 8O
When you arrive off the Ferry ,give me a call when you get to the Pub would ya  I have a reception crew waiting for your arrival this time .
Later, Cheers , and lots of Cider and Pints for em today, I obviously need them after learning of your ploy to the Isle .

Kato: That's me bidding! 8O No shill bidding guys. LOL :o
Yep and I've got some fenders on the go too. They are 15 footers/ they look great at 15 feet away  . I think the rack's got the thinner tubing and will go a lot cheaper than the thick tubed ones. $150. I have to find places that accept cheque payment, because of the wife's not liking sending CC info over the net. Then some ebayers won't mail to Canada. But with this guy it's ok.
Jim: Thanks for posting that pic brother. I'm anti tech now, I wasn't always.
Kelly the Isle of man is safe from me. I intend to baby the bike's Rpm's and test it's indurance. I want to ride it slowly all over Canada. As for JC's stuff, it's good aftermarket, but not very stock.
As soon as the good weather hits I'll post pics. This winter projet really has helped with the lack of riding. Thanks All 8)

That's the thing, wife doesn't like paypal, rational or not, that's the way it is. But it's cool. I'm working around it. It's more work, but no big deal. Every time I tell her I've got a bid on ebay, she asks "how much?" with that look in her eye. :x When I say it's only $30 or $40 she never bats a lash. She's a keeper.
Kato:
It's not just the address, it's the ebay account. You would have to bid on the item I tell you to bid on, up to my max, and then trust me to pay you. Then mail it on to me once you get the cash and pay. We'd have to have it well figured out in advance. There is a lot of stuff I haven't bid on because of circumstances, but eventually I find a simular item with less conditions. I haven't been shut out yet. I got 3 side covers for 97 cents each, that was my best purchase, too bad the shipping was $12.

Is there a 12 step program for eBay?
I got the luggage rack, rear fender, and front fender(no pitting), and another set of air box covers(with 350 emblems). The crazy thing is, I'm not using the air boxes. I'm using cone filters and I rejetted. I only got the first set of covers so you can't see through the middle of the bike. Now they arn't good enough. I had to get the 1972 covers with emblems  . All this since Monday.
I still want to get a new petcock and the high beam indicator that goes on the top of the headlight. It's like the cherry on top. They sell new tach's and speedos and yes they are so nice that I almost hit the by now button at $150 each/ The wife would kill me. It's gotta stop. I gotta remember that this is not a museum bike and never will be. But they keep offering great stuff Ebay! It's not the price of the part, shipping is usually more. $5 rear fender and $29 shipping. More pics pg 8 of gallery. Almost have as many hits as frosty, but can't quite get there.
Hey you eBayers, when you're bidding on something you really want and you're down to 45 seconds, and you place a bid 1/3 higher than you know it will go. Does it give you a bit of a gambling bug, buzzzz? 8O

I put up 3 before and after kinda pics in my album, page 8 of the gallery. 8O The airbox covers came out nice concidering I payed 12$ and just a NOS set of emblems that go on the covers go for well over $100. I wish I could say that I got rid of the pitting in the fender, but I had to buy another. The Rack fit perfect, and looks right on the bike. The bag I chose works well. What you see in the pic holds my tools, it's insulated like a cooler. The bag unzips and it turns into a packsack, easily fits a helmet and more with my tools in the cooler below. It also holds extra bungees so I can tie down the whole packsack to the luggage rack.
I need more gallery hits, my album is always 200 hits less than Frosty's :x Again thanks to Frostbite for suggesting nylon luggage. I think it has a correct look to it.
How do you know how many hits your gallery has?

I bought these saddle bags and am happy with them. And let me tell you, they are FREAKING HUGE! They fit the Lifan almost perfectly though.
Saddlebags (http://www.motodirect.com/servlet/Detail?no=106)
This tail bag sounds good too, it's very large and converts to a daypack so you don't have to leave it when the bike is parked.

Just don't bother with the jackets listed, they suck (it's like wearing a garbage bag).

I like the look of those bikes jim but not enough power. If there was a 150cc I would have picked it over the DS I bought. If I can get my bike running reliably(sp), I'd be verry happppy. As soon as the snow melts I'll have nice pics up. The year I get my motorcycle licence, we get the largest snow fall since 1936, figures eh?
Knot,
Ya I saw those bags, but since this one opens to a large packsack with a cooler underneeth and it was free from my ma, I'm going to give it a shot. I don't yet know what I need, so I'll save the cash for parts that I will need later.
Yeah would be nicer with a 200 or 250 even... I just like the style of the first one especially.
Knothead, I got a set of the saddle bags too and a tail bag... The tail bag I like, but I didn't know where to put the saddle bags what wouldn't cover my signals, did you put them infront of the rack?

Jim,
I can't remember which bike you have, but if it has the same rack as mine put the rear most strap through the front part of the rack and under seat. The middle strap goes just in front of the pin that locks the seat down and the front most strap goes where ever it lands. The flat bungies on the bottoms, I latch the plastic hook up front to the little metal loop on the passenger pegs and then pull all of the elastic towards the back of the bike, loop that over the bike and attatch the other end to the plastic d-ring on the back of the other bag...... I really ought to just take a pic, it would be easier to understand.
So far I have had no trouble with the bags getting burned on the pipe and they are far enough back to leave plenty of room for my big feet.
Pics. And sorry about the hijack!

No probs. good hijack and good pics :D
Knot. The 750 isn't that much more than the 350, but all repairs are X4 instead of X2. Mine was so close to stock I couldn't turn it into a cafe racer. I couldn't emagine painting my tank. The 325cc is only double the cc's of my old chinabike, but it's 4X's the horsepower. 8O If I were going to make a cafe racer I would use the 1973 G model, because of the disk break. It's not a great disk but it's better than the drums front and back that I have. I think all the 750's came with disk. My bike was cheaper than a Tomos Moped used or a new chinabike. With the cash I've put in so far to fix it up, it's equal to what I payed for the chinabike. The cool factor of owning a 36 year old bike is very high. 8)

The CB350 has many advantages for ownership. They built thousands of them and parts are readily available used for fairly cheap. The bikes can be found easily too in the US in running form for a few hundred.
The 750 has more of a following and parts/bikes are not as common making them more expensive.
I have a friend that restores/races the 350s and can tell you anything you need to know about them.

I thought about hard bags for my bike. There even were some sampsonite bags made for the honda cb350. I think of the luggage rack as a good excuse to stick some more chrome on my bike.
There is a cb360 1975 on "Kijiji" up here in Kitchener ontario.$800. 8O But again it is rarer than the 350 twin, (72 and 73 I think are the most popular years.) Rarer bikes are more expensive, and the parts are more expensive too. KATO said The CB350 has many advantages for ownership. It must of had problems if it was $800. Mine is the nicest 72 I've ever seen, but there was a 73 in almost perfect stock condition, red too. But for almost $3000  no. With everything I've done including tires, I'm still well under$2000. I really like the single seat on the old cb350 cop bikes. Makes them look like little bobbers. well with a cherry on a pole,

I could have got the left handle switch, that when activated, keeps the speedometer needle at the highest speed achieved, for issuing tickets. The cb750 was the main cop bike in japanese cities, but for the countryside, 450's, 360's and a few rare 350's were used.(cheaper on gas.) Using a 250 must be a modern thing. I don't know the year on those cop bikes? But, I have seen those chrome saddlebag holders with the saddlebags painted black on Ebay(I couldn't afford it$250+shipping).

I bet he'd talk down to a $1000. Way rarer than my bike, thus higher cool factor. I think with a bike like that, who's parts are hard to get, I might be better off spending more cash up front for a bike that needs less work. Find a bike that's a deal at $2500.
I don't have the cash for MBS. Heck I don't have the cash for even 1 bike. :? . I'm almost positive that the cb350 is the cheapest bike to put on the road. Once it's plated you can do just about anything with it. From cafe racer to chopper or a full restoration, the CL350 came with knobbie tires so it's a true DS. If you have private land, you could buy 6 cb350's for the price of a dirt bike. Insurance kills people with MBS where I live.
I keep thinking that someone with more $money$ than brains will see my bike and "just has to buy it". :D Sure I'd sell it for way more than it's worth. I don't love it that much. Saddly, that's the only way I'm ever going to work my way to a nice bike, which is ok, I like what I've got.

Multiple Bike Syndrome.
Its a highly contagious disease often caught after obtaining a motorcycle.
The only treatment is lack of funds and sometimes that doesn't even work.

I'm not only new to riding I'm new to wrenching as well Cal. I really like doing both and bike restoration can be done year round. I just don't have the cash for it. If the bike makes it to next year I'll drop the motor and redo the pistons, rings, cylinders, after that the bike should be reliable for years. Reliability is more important than looks anyway. I hope I'll still be happy with what I've got next year.

Ya, I really like the look of the old bikes, the bonus is that there are some older smaller bikes, that are very cool, and not like $8000 for a triumph. I'm not racing, riding dirt, I'm not doing stunts and I don't want a big bike. The only thing I don't like is that you can't shift from 5th to 1st at the stop light. You have to release the clutch a bit, shift, release again and shift. Or downshift to first as you come to the stop. The clutch is old school. If you do a cafe racer thing, you can get a more modern clutch, electronic timing, double front disk brakes, better suspension, frame wielding and a lot more. As long as I go faster and stop faster than the cars in the city I'm happy. I'd like to be able to keep up with traffic in the slow lane on the highway too. I think the bike fills my modest needs.

Well I posted a full bike picture. I'm on page 8 of the gallery. Last pic in my album. I made a timing tester from light bulb, and re did the timing today. The left cylinder was off quite a bit. I'm hoping thats why it wasn't firing all the time. The bike looks about 3 years old, not bad for 36. If I get it looking any newer, I might stop driving it. :P . Naaw, I'm gonna ride it everywhere.
If someone can imbed the picture into this thread that would be cool. 8)

Thanks guys. And thanks again for imbeding my pics jim. There is a vintage bike show in Paris Ontario, biggest in the province. There is a ride for sight at an army base I used to live at. I'd like to do the quebec ride again too. If the bike holds up I'll be very happy. It was barely running when I got it. Still needs tuning but I've got it close. I've checked out other sites for vintage riders, even the group I'm going to join. (canadian vintage motorcycle group) People ask questions and get no answers. or 2 replies in 2 weeks. I find now I have less questions, but when I need to know something I won't go to my corner bike shop. I come here.

I was having trouble with the timing and points gap. When I got the bike the left cylinder didn't fire.(sometimes) After I worked on it the Left was fine but the Right didn't fire(Sometimes) Tested it out for about a mile the other day. Much better. The Gaps were a hair too large. I keep expecting to find something really costly that will keep me from riding this spring, but the more work I do the better it gets. The compression isn't great but it's not bad for an old bike that hasn't been overhauled. I figure if the engine gets redone next year, it'll last forever. My rear fender showed up in the mail today. It shined up nice and will go on tomorrow. The bike will never be worth more $$$$ than I put into it.(Not a lot.) The time is free and I wouldn't be compensated if I were to sell it, but I don't care. I intend to keep this one a while. :)

I'm having trouble with a cylinder not firing, first one cylinder then the other. Sometimes both work perfectly; The problem comes and goes and is very frustrating.
If I take the sparkplug cap off the sparkplug,(of the non-firing cylinder)
But I hold the cap close, so that it arc's to the plug, Bang the cylinder fires up. If I push the cap onto the plug the cylinder stops. I can't hold the cap just off the plug and ride 8O . Sorry for being new but has anyone dealt with this? Getting very good spark, new points condensers, battery. Done the timing. The bike idles perfect as long as the sparkplug-cap isn't quite touching the spark plug. If I'm not being clear, let me know and I'll try to explain it better. n2R

8O What is your plan for it. 8O
Is it a parts bike? resto? cafe?
If it's a parts bike, and the Light bucket and petcock are in good working condition, I'll take those 2 parts for sure, maybe more with close-up pics . How can you post a pic like that with no info.........
That bike, with papers, is about 500$ here. No matter what you do with it, GOOD FIND brother. So Kato, where is that scrapyard?
Bike started with both cylinders this morning. Yesterday I did about 10 miles, and it ran well. I re-did the points, I think properly this time. Still too cold for a proper tune up, It'll run lean in the cold.
FYI there are 2 screws in the choke flap in both carbs. They loosen and can fall inside. The day I found that out, I tighted mine, they were almost falling out. Takes 10 seconds and saves worlds of heartache. Let me know if you want to sell parts, between me and Jack, you could strip that thing pretty quick.

Kato has a buddy down there who he could just flip the bike to for 300% profit. That's what makes it such a good find. It's got to be the cheapest powerplant for any type of project. Tested and working they go for about 150$ on ebay, but you have to wait till one pops up near you cause you don't want to have to pay shipping. Wow, 50$!. :o

Old but not too old. Cheap. I like the Triumph looking flat seat and style and chrome, but I could never afford one of those. For the price it's my dream bike. (price being everything.) I thought it would ride smoother than it does, it's a little tingly in the pegs. More vibes than my chinabike, but I haven't done the syncing of the carbs yet. I seems short from wheel to wheel. Counter steering is very quick, you can change lanes by just thinking. Feels heavier but smaller than my 150cc chinabike, and I guess it is. I wonder if you could strap one of these 325cc engines into a chinabike frame. I know I could make a crazy go cart with one.

They got me a normal policy, no theft or fire insurance but it's legal for street, $407 a year. I just saved lots of money. Maybe I can do a little ebay-ing.

First bad experience with ebay.
Bought a headlght bucket and it was delivered today. It's not the one in the picture. This one is not useable. The damage isn't where it is in the picture, and where the rim mounts to the bucket, the tab is just gone. I could post a pic but it's obvious they stuck the wrong on in the box. I called the toll free # but they were short staffed, so they said.
"We will get back to you by end of business Saturday." I emailed a pic with what they sent, and and what they advertised, all in one pic with arrows and stuff. I hope they make good, but I reallydon't feel good about this one at all. They gave me good feedback when they cashed my cheque, and before I got the part. They have a great rating. BUT :( I just wanted the bucket. :(
On top of that, they included the shipping on the part's value, I had to pay duty tax on the part and the shipping.
Part+shipping+handling+ import tax on the whole thing. $55, and a NOS bucket in perfect condition just went for $49. Feeling kinda glum/n2r :(

Just tryen to hammer down the details. I won't go into what I've done. It's quicker to say what hasn't been renewed. Mine would have lasted the season, but because of the cracking around the rim, it wasn't near rain tight.(ok, truth, it has little cracks, they drive me crazy and I'm looking for perfection on a shoestring budget)
I don't care how the company makes up for their mistake. They have other good stuff they could send to make me happy :) As long as they don't hang me out to dry for their mistake. If they make ammends, I'll post their name.
I tell ya just changing 2 teeth on the rear sprocket makes a huge difference. Like 6th gear for highway. You might look at a 34 tooth once you get that beast plated for your girl, Vince. Way more travel in the lower gears. Power comes from near the top end of the powerband. Tap the throttle at 6000rpm's and hold on. 55mph in 4th gear no problems. 8O . The real bonus is turning left at a stop light, 1st takes you all the way through the turn. 8) I don't know how but I've got 550 miles on the bike already. If I ride hard enough I could put 36 years of miles on it this season/ The season is just around the corner, get fixen :D

Well, what an odd animal an oldbike is. I finally got an apraisal for the bike. The papers will come later by mail. When I get them, I can go to my insurance agent and get a Theft/vandalism/fire policy on the bike. Right now its just collision insurance. No theft insurance on bikes over 20 years old in Ontario. Soon I will be able to go anywhere, park the bike, and not worry. Right now if the bike is stolen, I'm walking. I don't know how much the extra policy will cost but the peace of mind is priceless. As of today the bike is worth, $2,200, CAN.
If the bike is stolen, $2,200 doesn't get you much here in Canada. Something old that's sort of safe and runs, kinda, but needs a few things. Maybe a chinabike, new? Maybe? I would probably end up adding cash and trying to get something more suited to the riding I do.
If I got an original set of mufflers in great shape, the value might increase. The gaskets and oil seal job I have planned won't affect the price at all, nor the tires and chain I put on.
August is the time when many Canadian riders start thinking about what they will be riding next year. I have been thinking about it for a while now. If I sold my bike and came up with several thousands of dollars, I would have a lot of options. The problem is the several thousands of dollars. :? When I haven't gone for a ride in a while I start surfing kijiji and Craigslist. After a ride, and I'm still smiling, I'm very happy with the bike I have. I have to remind myself to be satisfied when the fixing slows down. Fixit is a nasty disease, once you get the bike running perfect, you have no use for it anymore.

80 MPH /uphill / Into the wind, and I'm not near the red line. My bike does not fart dust. It leaks 2 drops after every ride. But I figure that's just it's claiming territory behavior. Well tuned it has more horses and is faster to 60mph, and in the 1/4 mile than a ninja250, though the 600 smokes my bike. It took me to Quebec and back no problems, steady 70mph. Chinabike did the same ride but at a steady 60mph, pinned, and on different roads and highways.
I'm a small guy so a 500cc bike to me would be huge. I'm also not rich, so my options are very few. When a member gets his bike running I do get a fixit fix. But when my bike is fixed and it suddenly starts running better, I get a rush. I just need a project, before I finish this one.

I like learning new skills even if they don't pay well. I like bikes too much to try squeezing money from something I like doing. Thus my cb project, but my project is being inextricably forced towards it's completion. I got it last september I think, I'm doing the engine rebuild for Christmas this year. But thats it. Project complete. I'd like to make a cafe racer out of a Honda black bomber. It's 60's but looks 50's. And you can do it all on the cheap. The only chinabikes around here are dirt and pits.

I'm still looking for the deal. The lady that just wants her dad's old cb out of the garage. Sometimes the deal jumps out at you, sometimes you gotta wait. Making the decision to start looking is part of the project. In fact it's step #2. Step #1 is collect information on the bike. After my chinabike I vowed to never forget step #1.
I don't want a cb360 twin because the parts are more expensive and the bike isn't that much better. A benley, ca77, 450 black bomber are all more expensive and the parts are hard to find, but the finished product is worth more than a cb350. A cb350 4cylinder has less vibrations, is less powerful(only a bit) and harder to tune, just as cheap as a twin for parts, but the twin is more collectable and valued higher. I've have been close twice and it didn't pan out once, but I'm still working on the other.
I had no idea what a rz350 looked like so I google imaged it. Yep I could see me riding that. I like the bike frosty came up with too http://fredericton.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-1965-Yamaha-250-YDS3-W0QQAdIdZ60021081 But I have to be realistic. I can only afford to insure 1 bike. I can register a second bike for $45. But insurance is another matter.
When the price of a DRZ 400 SM comes down, that's what I can see me riding. I don't know why a gsxr is less expensive than a good DRZ :?

If it weren't for my cb350 guru I'd be lost, that's the truth. Since I'm Canadian I can only insure 1 bike, and it had better be dependable cause our season is very short. I can't afford to miss a single sunny day. I like the dependability of BMW but I haven't seen a 400cc bmw anywhere, and I couldn't afford it anyway. I can't really find a small, dependable, lite weight bike cheap, besides my cb. I kinda like the 450 nighthawk and its a bit newer, lots of parts and not too expensive. Hmmmm
I always wanted a virago 250 till I drove one for my motorcycle test. I like old bikes but they aren't the best for long rides. I saw a Kawi W650 at my dentist. Nice looking bike. Great for long rides. New, but looks old. It's still too big, but it didn't scare me like other 650 machines I've seen. But it's a rare bike, and I figure parts would be a deal breaker.
I've decided to keep the cb for a while, at least next year. Now I'm looking for a hurting bike with papers, that needs work, but would still look good as cafe racer. That would be a fun project I think.

I dunno, I like Cr's and the like, *but* Cafe and Replica bikes make me do stupid things. For the first 6 years I had the RD all kitted out with the Clip Ons, rear sets, Docked Heads, Ported out, etc. After 4 years, it got relegated to second bike status, and I kinda found I would take chances on the RD I never would with a more cruiser=type bike (at that time a CB500T)
Maybe it's just me, and I don't have the mental discipline to keep it cool on a hot bike, but now the RD is more or less back to stock form, and I still have fun with it, but less stupidly. (With a few notable exceptions.)

Remember Vince I only have the cash to insure 1 bike. The racer would be a build project that I could sell to someone for a profit. It would be up to the new owner not to stunt. (burnouts infront of cops :P ) One of the things I like about my old CB is the front drum. It forces me to slow down and leave more room to maneuver. I don't trust myself with a monster bike. I ride with destination in mind, not pushing the limits. That's not to say a semi won't get me. There is always a chance of that.
If I can't have a second bike, I'd like to work on one. :D

Glad to see you've got it happening! Was that a shiny new set of Keihin's I saw there in the foreground?
Should be an interesting winter for ya'!

I can't wait to see the finished bike.

Any idea when the bike will be ready to post pics here?

A month or 2. I'm in no hurry cause of the weather. Today's chore is to de-spoke some very nice rims I bought and polish them up. I tried to take the tires off my wheels but started to dammage the rim and stoppped. 1 company has been giving me deals for a while now, they have some items I still want including tire irons that have a rubber roller that does not dammage the chrome of the rims.
Saturday I'll get the tires taken off my old riding rims and start tearing them down. I have spokes coming from Bangkok. Nice rims, new spokes, and I'll pollish up the the front and rear drum hubs of the original wheels.
The next big job is my handlebar when it comes, all the wires run through the tubes so it's a bit of a chore
If I could find a brand new gas tank I'd press "Buy it NOW!" Then scramble to find a way to pay, but I wouldn't pass up the oppertunity. I'm still undecided about what to do with my seat. Flat looks old and cool, but it does not feel right after riding a more modern bike. My bony butt is gonna wreck this seat in a year or two. I'm not a patient person, this bike has taught me to slow down a bit. I've been putting parts away for this phase of the build for a year now. I'm going out to the garrage now to pick up my frame and carry down to my warm basement.
Once I get the motor back, I'll set it up with the old carbs, outside and get it running. Once I switch to the good carbs I'll sell off all my old parts. Even if I sell only a few things it should pay for my insurance this year.
Picture wise, the bike shouldn't look too much different. In person you should be able to get 5 feet closer to the bike without seeing anything ugly, but the motor should be better and even more reliable than stock.

Just don't do the final assembly in the basement.

Final assembly is outside!
I have a lot of polishing to do. The bike is all in tiny pieces, I don't want to loose anything, so it's layed out so I can clean and polish and put back to it's spot until needed.

I have heard of people assembly a project in the basement before thinking about how they will get it out when its done.

What did learn about spokes? I have been unable to get the correct spokes for my rear wheel on my Hibird. Decided I am just going to take off a couple of spokes and get a new set made for me.

Custom spokes is where I was headed Cal. I found 1 guy in Bangkok selling vintage spokes. 5$ a spoke was too rich for me, I payed $1.25/ea. X 72. I was expecting the darn things today, I don't want to dismantle my good wheels till the new spokes arrive and are checked. Polishing the front drum cover today. Monday is supposed to be warm, so I'll pull the forks and fenders and handlebar out in my cold garage. I could do all the work in about 2 weeks, but it would still be cold out. If santa sticks $$$$ in my tool box, my bike would have no problem eating that up too.

Are you going to lace them yourself?

I'll take indepth pics and lace them, then take them to the local shop to be trued, re-skinned, and ballenced. I could do it, but they have way better equipment to do the truing. Hopefully, it's a "for the life of the bike" job. the spokes were good enough for the first 37 years.

The lacing is the biggest labor cost if you can get the close to true for the shop.
I did a good enough job on an xr80.

I know I'll try it myself, but not the plan. I'll just loosen everything to give back to the shop. The tires still have to go on the rims again anyways, and I like that they don't damage the rims with the tire machine.

Well what's done looks good so far. The black is just rattle can till next year. As stated on page 1 of this thread, this upgrade was all about the motor. As long as the motor is being done properly, and I don't have to touch it again, I should have the cash to media blast the frame and have the frame professionally painted next year.
On top of doing the motor work, both wheels have been re-newed. New bearings and seals, newish rims, spokes polished and clear coated. Every nut, bolt, and washer on the bike has been polished and waxed. That should only last a year or two assuming proper polishing maintainance is kept. New bolt sets are very expensive but worth every penny.
The plan is to keep puttering, doing what I can till I get the motor back. I should have the motor this weekend or next. I didn't fill up the gallery with pics this time, I'm making a CD of what I've done and what I've used to do it. Each picture is Big. 3-4 megabites, for me, uploading huge pics so that you can zoom in isn't an option for me because of dial-up.
Kato introduced me to a WERA cb350 racer down in the States, he's been a huge help with my build. He's the person who asked for a cd of my upgrade, and I was happy to help. If anyone else wants to pay the shipping, (About 2 dollars) I will send them a copy too. Basically, how to restore a bike with what you have lying around the house, or can get at the local hardware store.
Actually if 1 person with high speed internet gets a cd, that's all you need. It would take me a week to send it over the web.
I think the bike will look about the same in pictures, but the difference in person will be night and day. Once the new motor gets broken in and the new mikuni carbs get the right jets, the real difference will come when I ride it.
