From what I'm reading we should adjust the valves prior to starting/first run and again after initial break-in. This is the first time I've ever adjusted valves on an engine...any engine.

Unfortunately I am not seeing a finite set of instructions.

The manual states .05mm, but doesn't state in the engine should be cold or warm and it doesn't state if that intake or exhaust.

According to the sticky on this page, I see that I'm supposed to set it low during break in and then I see, "Most of us run .003" (.076mm) intake and .004" (.101mm) exhaust. Is that checking cold or warm? What is setting it "low" (measurement) mean?

Motocheez (most popular videos regarding this bike on YT) says to check/set valves with the motor cold and set to 0.002" (.05mm) on intake and exhaust which coincides with the manual, but landed on .003" (.76mm) for his personal Hawk.

Regarding the timing, I see that you're supposed to set the valves after you align the "F" mark and not the "T" mark, but Motocheez says to align the "T" mark. Which one?

These numbers vary widely considering a large majority of starting and running problems are a direct result of poor valve lash.

What should the procedure be? :hmm:

Set valves with the motor cold and set to 0.002" on intake and exhaust to .003" .
You will use the "T" mark on the compression stroke.

I did my valve adjustments here: http://chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=21929&page=2

with your handle I assume this is for a Hawk 250.

Thanks for the info fellas!

My "handle" has nothing to do with the Hawk 250 (just coincidence). My last name is Hawkins and my first name starts with J. It's was my Army call sign and my nickname now as a firearms instructor.

What should the procedure be? :hmm:Cold engine, .002 inches on intake and .003 exhaust. I prefer .003, .004 because the adjustment wants to "creep" while tightening things back up. The "T" issue is more complicated. Half the time T is on the wrong stroke for valve adjustment accuracy. Sad. But true. If the engine was a two stroke, then yes, T is always on the compression stroke, but on a four stroke engine T is on the compression stroke 1/2 of the time. The other time it is on the exhaust stroke...ARH
