Are stainless steel mesh filters that you see all over eBay any good? Are they reusable? If so, how do you clean them and are they supposed to be oiled. I currently have a foam pod filter on my Hawk but I was just curious about how these other filters work. Is there some type of filter media sandwiched between the outer and inner stainless mesh? It appears that the K&N style filters like this are woven media with no stainless.

Usually they are a cotton, or similar, media that is smushed between the mesh. Very likely that they are not cleanable, especially given the price. You could try I guess, worst case scenario is you would have to throw them out.
I prefer the foam elements with the outer foam cover. Leave the outer dry, oil the finer inside filter, and it will do a pretty good job of keeping the dust out. Plus, they are washable/reusable. I keep two on hand, one on the bike, one washed and dried ready for oiling and use when needed. Saves from down time.

Same filter I have, don't waste your time. They rust after the first good rain.

About 18 months ago I did something similar as an experiment. Yours is a little more reusable than mine was, but it worked rather well until I just ditched the airbox all together. http://www.chinariders.net/showpost.php?p=262352&postcount=141

I didnt run it for long before I just went with a pod filter. The media I used is a dual density synthetic fiber with an oiled fine media. It is designed to catch very fine paper dust. I did it that way because.1 sheet would make about 10 filters for the bike, but would quickly get clogged up if I rode somewhere dusty.

There was a filter like that on Son of Weldangrind's pit bike. It is washable, but it must be oiled carefully with something similar to what K&N offers. If you use foam oil on it, it clogs almost completely. I tossed it in the trash and installed a Uni pod type.
I use Maxima Fab1 spray on foam filters. It's easy to see where you applied it (because it's blue) and it sticks like cobwebs. Good stuff.

I do the same as Dan. I oil the inner filter and not the outer filter. Doesn't get dirty as quick.
