View Full Version : TBR7 ignition system tests today

Well after the bike gets delivered today the first thing we're gonna do is pull the intake boot off the head and inspect the o-ring, after that I'm gonna check stator output and resistance test the coil windings, and then go through all the connectors. The bike doesn't want to do anything other than idle. We've swapped the carb with the Hawk and no change. We've verified it's not tank ventilation. I'm also gonna see if it has a resistor plug and check the plug cap to make sure it's not a resistor cap. We've already tested it with the intake tube off, no difference. The valves are adjusted properly. Might even put my timing light on it.
We put a performance pipe on it and rejetted the carb. The bike ran perfectly for 4 days and the plug looked perfect. Then it started running crappy at WOT and progressively got worse as far as rpm and throttle had to be lower to run decent. And the plug was now looking lean. Till finally it would only run at low rpm with a pinch of throttle, and now it only sounds decent at 1500 rpm idle. Anything else it just pops, surges, and misses, even with the perfectly tuned Hawk carb.
Being a trained tech I know about what the stator should be putting out and static testing the coil, but I searched the forums for a couple hours this morning and there is surprisingly little information on both. I find it hard to believe someone hasn't delved further into the ignition system on these. Tako was the only one I could find that had any information on stator output. Either I'm searching the wrong keywords or something. Also I was disappointed to find out the direct ignition coil was a rigged up Ford part instead of bolt on. And why aren't there links for the stator, CDI and coil?

I’ve posted a couple things - lack of interest seems to be the cause
I believe and check with hawk 75v AC at red n white wire at all 3 points
Yeah there are direct fit DC CDI units and connect the skinny black wire to black on the bike etc
I wouldn’t bother replacing a stator if only ign coil faulty - excludes fracturing shipping time etc

Hall affect sensor may fail but wouldn’t that be at all rpm not only higher ?
Flywheel not loose?

The bike isn't here to test yet but the stator is probably fine. It's been ran quite a bit in this condition and the battery seems like it's fully charged.

If that is the bike you guys took swimming I would start at the ground wire and go from there checking all the electric connectors.

The wrong sparkplug. The bike comes with a resistor cap and THE FACTORY installs a resistor plug! Thanks to Tako's kit we had a non-resistor plug.. I'll post more later but it was 3 poor connections and the wrong spark plug. He just took it for a 2 hour ride and it ran amazing the entire time.

Bike doesn’t need a battery to run when AC CDI
Battery is just for lights n starter etc

What does a resister cap look like? Or are they all resister?
Listings on these is just a plain plug etc n I’d think non resister everything would run fine as nothing serious that the magnetic field could or would corrupt.
My mate n I made a stupid mistake once n fitted non resistor plugs to a individual coil Nissan engine n took hours to work out why ran crap, long story etc and emf upset cam sensor
Fitted correct plugs n no dramas etc
Never really heard your case tho.
Seems my kits delivering good value?
I wonder if you might’ve mistaken the issue with #42 pilot jet due to this issue - just thinking if you had this issue all along that it might’ve screwed the test n tune results

Well this is what we got, and keep in mind I'm using a cheap ($10) analog meter that's been bouncing around in my toolbox for many years. We checked the intake boot o-ring first, all good. Then got 14v at the battery at idle. Next was the stator, the Chinese don't seem to follow any certain color code, I'm used to seeing 3 yellow or white wires coming out of the stator. Lead to lead I got 16-19v and 75vac from the red wire. Isolated the rectifier/regulator and lead to lead resistance checked out good.
Now before I moved on to the coil there was dried mud in the CDI and turn signal connectors but they were still making a good connection, and Jay cleaned them up as best he could. The connector going to the rectifier/regulator wasn't even fully plugged in and came apart as soon as I bumped it. Same for the wire connected to the coil, it was just floating there and I don't know how it hadn't slipped off. And ofcourse it doesn't read power there with the ignition on until you turn it over. So then I had him pull coil off so I could test the windings.
The first thing I noticed was the steel cap was stamped 5K Ohm symbol. We had recently installed the plug from TXpowersports and I knew it was a resistor plug, so we dug out the factory plug and it was also a resistor plug (4.8K)! I didn't pull the cap off the wire but it tested 7.4K through the windings. Well Jay remembered there was a plug included in Tako's kit and sure enough it wasn't a resistor plug. We slapped everything back together and Jay took it for a 15 minute test ride.
I sat out on the porch and listened to it pull strong through all the gears as he was taking off. He come back grinning from ear to ear so we plugged the weep hole and he took off again for a couple hours. He came back all excited and telling stories about passing cars on the highway, wheelies, etc.. He was so happy with it he left his car here and rode the bike home.
A good end to a crappy story, and I wanna put the word out there for TBR7 owners, that if you've got the steel resistor cap you'd better check to see if the factory put the right spark plug in it.

It was still running good when we rejetted the carb, I think the coil was just getting overwhelmed by all the resistance it was pushing through, which means it wouldn't hurt to replace it. And yes, your kit is an excellent value that I highly recommend. But sadly that 42 pilot was way off and belching black smoke. We put a different pilot in and it ran great for 4 days before the coil started failing.
The cap is steel and looks like some junk they put on cheap lawn tractors back in the day.

This is the main reason I changed out my connectors to waterproof connectors. I found myself constantly having to clean them out. I found a few on my bike that weren't clipped in all the way. That's what it's always a good idea when assembling the bike to check every connection on the bike. You will be surprised on how many aren't clipped in.

I went over the Hawk more thoroughly, but I had 5 months of bad weather to tinker with it before I could ride it.

How can you tell? is it printed on the plug, can you identify visually or you need to pull the plug and research by model# serial# if it is a resistor plug?
Also..triple checking - steel plug cap means you need a non resistor plug?...correct

Hey one legged....2lz calls sitting on the porch a "bench buzzard". Thanks for all your info!
You're welcome :)
I think when it comes to electronics and wiring alot of folks don't know where to start, what to look for, and generally assume it must be some black magic that the manufacturer concocted to make it run.
But that's not the case, especially with these China bikes. The wiring and ignition system is very simple 35yr old technology. It took me less than 30 minutes to test everything in the system and diagnose the problem, and that's with drinking beers and not being in any particular hurry. The only thing I couldn't test is the CDI but usually they work or they don't, and if everything else checks out then..
I'm also a 4th generation electrician and I still do residential part time with a helper, but I'm mostly retired and have alot of free time which I enjoy.

The sparkplug will have an "R" as the second or third letter printed on it. And you can simply put your ohmmeter on it to be sure. And look on your cap to see if it has a 5K marking, which can also be unscrewed and checked with an ohmmeter.
You need a resistor cap or a resistor plug, but not both.

Glad the TBR is up and running. Thank you so much for the info on the ignition system. I will be sure to go and check up on my TBR to confirm i don't have a double resistor going on that could rear its ugly head at anytime.
This hands on info is priceless and is not written in the manuals.

I'm doing good, on my last check up they said the bone was healing well and if everything still looks good in 3 weeks they'll give me the ok to start walking. I can already stand on it without pain and I do my leg exercises.
I'm still wanting to port and polish the Hawk head but I know that will be more work for Jay, who's been a trooper through all of this. Every other day he stops down to bring me supplies and see if I need anything else, clothes washed, grocery shopping, etc.. I live in a secluded cabin in the woods (remember the movie Misery?) and don't get much company. I share the property with my sister but just like my mother she thinks bikes and quads ARE THE DEVIL! :lmao: And figures if I got myself in this mess I can get myself out.
But I'm doing ok for an old man. I got 2 gals I'm seeing and both help out with the housework and such a few days a week. But sadly some of my other projects have been put on hold, I'm not riding the racing quad and my award winning mud truck hasn't been to a single event this year.

2 gals? hope they don't shake hands and compare notes? I gotta tell a story here....One of my helpers around my property, who is a great 23 yo, has a girl friend by the name of China, so one day she was in our shop and I intro her to the BMS...I said China meet China, she wasn't impressed. but the rest of the story.....this young fellow and his lady have a couple they are friends with. But un be known, he is seeing the other lady, sneeks out of the house late at night. I hope they all don't compare notes.....If I had time I would write a book....LOL LOL!!!!
Secluded cabin? sometimes I wish we could get away from all the dam daily routine....lol Sometimes when we sled, we rent a cabin and just get away.
old man? heck I am 63....never too old...I think like 40 year old....my mrs thinks I have dementia, but the other day she misplaced something. lol

I'm only 47 but besides being a smoker that loves preparing gourmet meals and drinking beer, I welded for 20yrs which didn't help my eyes or lungs. I also have more steel in me than some compact cars and severe rheumatoid arthritis which is genetic.
As far as the 2 gals they both know about each other and I wouldn't have it any other way. Just recently one bought the other a "toy" lol. :yay:
The boat has been put on hold till I can use it, and I've only been swimming and fishing one time this year and haven't done any camping. The mud truck is a '74 K20 Camper Special with 1 ton running gear sitting on a 8" suspension lift and 38" Swampers with a posi rear. It consistently wins it's tire class at every event we take it to and is still street legal. Both of my quads have been neglected this year and I blame some of that on the Hawk.
I do like living out in the sticks and the nearest city is an hour away. And my sister and I get along pretty well and we figured out it's alot cheaper to set 2 cabins close together so we can share one power pole, one water main, and one septic tank on 4.5 acres of land. She makes the land payment and I pay everything else. The cabin has been neglected too but that will change when Jay's boy starts back to school. And we haven't been doing our residential electrical work since I was injured so I'm glad I had some savings put back.
I'm hoping on the 29th they tell me I can get back on my feet and I can get back to enjoying this summer and back to work. I'm also a firm believer in the 2nd amendment and I love my revolvers, they never jam and I won't own one that doesn't have atleast a 4" barrel. :)

I have a super blackhawk in 44mag with a 10.5" barrel you would love then LOL.
Work has put me in the same boat as you, no camping, no fishing, no kayaking/boating and the only miles the bikes are getting is to and from work. Hopefully they let you free so you can get back to enjoying life soon, its too short to be down.

Nice...very nice!!!! I ll get another cup of coffee here to talk about guns.....I converted to semi auto's several years ago, I just wasn't a fan of the 357 or 38....but it is how it fits a persons hand, carry, site acquisition, recoil management, and shooting style, etc. One can debate wheel guns, brands, etc., etc., for decades. I don't like the gun forums for that reason. Any firearm is a good buy and cant be passed up!!! Stay safe and carry on!
This forum?....people here don't bash or argue brands...lots of kindness, laughs, information, and so forth...GREAT Place to visit!!!!

Being raised on a farm and being a hunter in my younger years I was very familiar with guns but didn't see much point in handguns. Then when I was 26yrs old in Florida I answered the door for an attractive young lady and she shoved a 20 gauge shotgun in my face and made me sit at my kitchen table while her man carried all my belongings out the door. I don't know if having a handgun would have made any difference in that particular situation but I went out and bought one the very next day, and to this day I always have one within reach. I've never owned a semi auto that didn't jam on me at some point and time and I love the feel and weight of a good revolver.
Poor Jay had to ride the Hawk for 45 minutes yesterday before taking the TBR out for a couple hours, and complained bitterly about having to do so. It's a hard life I know.. and on top of that I had him ride all gravel roads. I don't know about his TBR adventure because I was asleep in bed by the time he got back but I'm sure he'll fill me in tomorrow. Pretty bad when ya gotta ride vicariously.. :ohno:

Jay's (Mcfailbutter-old World of Warcraft gaming handle) TBR7 is still running great, albeit a little too rich on the bottom end. But he's very pleased with it's performance and as long as it doesn't foul a plug I see no harm in it. Right now it's running the stock pilot (which we think has been drilled), 1 turn out on the mixture screw, no washers on the stock needle, and a 108 main jet, with a performance exhaust.
The bike never needs to be choked to start and the only drawback is it's a little hard starting when it's hot, unless you open the throttle some when cranking it over. We've discussed turning the mixture down to .75 turns out but.. I think the TBR airbox is more restrictive than the Hawk and we're gonna try a pod filter before making any carb tuning changes.
And he can't stop talking about getting the Trakmaster knobbies (shouldn't have let him take the Hawk offroad :hehe: ) so I'm sure that'll be his next purchase. We still haven't put the trunk on it yet.
We spent 3 hours in Lowe's today buying kitchen paraphernalia (sinks countertops cabinets etc) for my cabin and I spent enough to buy another China bike lol. And after figuring out how to strap all that on the back of the little Toyota (looking like the Beverly Hillbillies) we went to Texas Roadhouse for some steaks and tasty beverages. :)

hillbillies as in Beverly? once upon a time, not long ago, we purchased a honda 4 door, cheap, for a grocery getter. Our son commandeered it, reinforced the roof, and carried his honda 450 on top. built a ramp to load it and such on the trunk. I hope my insurance agent didn't see it. The bike is still running great and keeping a perma-grin on Jay's face. I'm still concerned about the coil because even though we fixed the resistance problem if it was actually falling after being ridden a couple of months like that surely it had to do some damage, insulation breakdown etc.. but it seems to be just fine even on long rides.
He patched the weep hole today with JB Tank Weld, we had previously just plugged it. And the hole is up under the front of the cap so you can't see it. I jumped the gun telling him to put a hole in it, but I was trying to diagnose a problem that was 15 miles away for 2 weeks. He tried riding it with the cap off but the bike was bucking so hard it was just splashing gas all over him and the bike.
He also bought some armored gloves and a metric tool set to be able to work on it. Today he tried to install the trunk (just like Jerry's and a few of my other friends) but swears it's physically impossible to do so without going against the laws of nature. (Again, the bike is 15 miles away from me) I know I can install the mount if he brings it over, but in the meantime does Jerry have any tips or suggestions? :hmm:
Also I purchased another boom stick today, a long barrel Stevens 20 gauge magnum pump shotgun (I think I need an intervention..)

I haven't been able to look at it yet but I guess the rack sits flush on the bike so he can't put the 2 mounting brackets under it. He tried jacking it up with washers but then there's no way to hold the 4 screws to tighten the nuts and the screws are too long. Idk, I figure it can't be too complicated. I was teasing him about licking windows after he told me his troubles, but to be fair he doesn't have much metal fab experience. :thanks:

38s and 44s are fun calibers, great selection of bullets and a lot recips for handloading. With the right frame you can even use safely elmer keith loads.
On the stevnes 20 ga, the greatest thing about that shotgun is that is a clone of the winchester 1300, another fun pump shotgun. I enjoyed my 1300 more than my 870s. Faster and smother.

Well Jay figured it out, he popped in today to borrow some flat bar and use some tools. The bar is 1" wide and 1/8" thick, cut 2 pieces 11" long and rounded the ends, and then drilled holes 8" apart on one and 7 something on the other. Then washed the cutting oil off and painted them with black rustoleum.
This way it only lifts the factory rack (which is identical to Tako's largest one pictured above) an 1/8" and contacts all 4 tubes, without sticking out beyond the plastic trunk mount. The beauty of this is now you can reach the heads of the mounting screws with the factory rack installed on the bike, and it looks good, not cobbled up.
Before he left I made him swear on the good book (Tobacco Road) that he would post pics of the fab work and final installation, but don't hold your breath.. :hehe:

Looking good partner, I was actually concerned it might look a little too big for the bike but it doesn't. Probably the best $35 you've spent as far as improving the bikes usefulness as a commuter.
And for those that don't know, the locking trunk quickly detaches with a key and has a handle so you can carry it like a suitcase. I wanna put one on mine but I'd have to mount it 8" further back so I could swing my leg over. :hmm:

I almost commented on your crappy paint job.. :hehe: But you were hungover and just trying to get it done so..
What's unforgivable is my Hawk has sat in this exact spot for 13 days! >:(

Well Monday Jay absolved himself of the crime of letting my Hawk set for 2 weeks. Ofcourse he complained bitterly about having to ride it and came up with several excuses not to, he had to pick up his boy from school, wanted to get a tooth pulled, there are trees in the woods etc.. So I said just run it down to the store 3 miles away and get me a bottle, to which he downtroddenly agreed.
I wheeled myself out on the porch to watch the festivities and listen to the deep rumble of my Hawk as it roared off into the distance. Well I sat there for 25 minutes awaiting the return of my beloved and finally decided to grab myself another cold beverage, come back out and still no Hawk so I started picturing scenarios of my bike careening off into a ravine and fiery explosions..
Finally I hear my bike off in the distance coming from the OTHER direction up the road. Turns out Jay must have been enjoying the ride and took the long way home, a nasty twisty hilly gravel road called Coulson rd. Ofcourse I chided him for causing me the distress and worry, but secretly relished the fact that he's getting so comfortable on gravel with the Hawk. There's a bridge on that road that I jump in 4th gear but didn't ask him if he got any air time, some things you're better off not knowing.
On other fronts the kitchen is coming along nicely, we ran water lines to the sink, covered that wall in plywood and put the backsplash up, and set the cabinets in place. We also put the Sears and Roebuck 5.5hp boat motor back together with new coil, points and condenser. It's always tricky putting something back together that you tore apart months ago, but we muddled through. :)

Onelegged sir, hope you are healing and will be riding soon. When I started to read the first few lines, I thought maybe Jay had gone off to play frisbee golf, or at least at the store, he purchased some new bj shorts. Or printing more 5x7 pix. Am glad the hawk is getting some exercise! Maybe Jay will ride it more, and leave you with the tbr. Hmmm that is a scary thought!
The old sears motor? Points and condenser, yup that is old school.

Haha! Yes I'm glad the Hawk is getting some exercise. It's running so good and I've found over the years the worst thing you can do is let a vehicle set for extended periods of time. Trade the Hawk for the TBR? Never! I've got the suspension and height tuned perfectly for myself and made the driveline bulletproof, and it has a rumble the TBR doesn't even come close too.
The worst part is because of Jay's 140lb weight and smaller diameter tires he's probably faster than me right now. I plan on doing the head soon to rectify this but my plate is pretty full at the moment. Also the 2 local gas stations only carry 87 octane so that's another concern when considering bumping up the compression.
I feel pretty good and my 2 month check up is tomorrow, hopefully the doc is gonna tell me I can get back on my feet.
