Finally took the swingarm off to grease it, and it wasn't a moment too soon. Put the bike on bike stand, and used a pair of jackstands to stabilize it. Break the chain at the master link, take off the rear brake caliper, remove lower shock bolt and loosen the swingarm bolt.
After the swingarm is off, got a great view of the front sprocket. Now is a great time to swap it for better chain alignment (http://chinariders.net/showthread.php?p=319555#post319555).
A 1/2" wire brush is great for cleaning out the swingarm bushings. Found no traces of grease anywhere...
I tried to put some 3/8" washers inside the umbrella dust caps (http://chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=24553), but they add several mm to the width and would not fit swingarm inside the frame... oh well just have to buy new dust caps if they wear out.
Used marine grease everywhere. Torque swingarm bolt to 45 ft/lbs and called it a night.
