View Full Version : Hawk 250 doomsday prepper question

Seeing as how the news is so cheerful everyday, I have a technical question for the preppers on here.

If an EMP event happened and your Hawk 25O was sitting outside, what spare parts would you need to have in your Faraday cage in order to get the bike running post haste?

A Digital dash, voltage regulator, LED bulbs, CDI, turn signal box would all be shot. Getting it running would be the very least of your concerns. Yes it’s possible but the coming year has larger unfavorable questions.

Ho well have a good night all :hi:

You could convert it over to points with CG125 parts!

Yeah old bikes with points would be kings of the road if the SHTF. Thanks for the replies, seems like “what if” scenarios are becoming reality, doesn’t hurt to be prepared.

You have a Faraday Cage ... but no garage or shed to keep your Hawk in ?

It was a theoretical question. :) Faraday cages, at least small ones, are quite easy to make. You can turn a metal safe into one.

An EMP event huh? I knew there was something I forgot to prep for.. It's that darn Tako, he said he was gonna throw in something free with every cluster, and now he's doomed the entire Hawk Nation. :grr:

Oh damn, I just stepped in some corona, now I gotta go soak my foot in parts cleaner for a couple hours. Hope it doesn't affect my looting ability.. Well I'll let y'all get back to your speculating. :hi:

There are 2 types of people when SHTF

Preppers and Looters.

My last trip to town there was nothing left to loot!

According to all the legitimate testing I have read EMP will only affect components that are in operation at the time of the impulse.

I once asked a top NASA engineer what they did about CME, which is the natural pure form of EMP. He told me there was no real problem with the stuff out in space directly exposed constantly. If they got an overload surge they turned it off, then back on.

A simple computer reset. Disconnect the battery for one minute, connect it back up.

Now that consumer goods are becoming more and more sparse, current data is showing a significant rise in the sale of ammunition and withdrawal of cash.

People going old school, not trusting banks and "the system" and want to have liquid cash, and of course weaponry to protect their goods and families

Haha! I think people are seriously over reacting and the average American IQ is about 70. But I live on a small farm and even with our limited resources we could get by without water, electricity and toilet paper for atleast a year, maybe indefinitely if we did some swapping of goods and fuel with the locals. Even if it meant living primarily off of chicken and eggs and some beef. And I'm within walking distance of a major river and handy with a fishing pole. And we got a big creek running through the property and are well equipped for any stupidity that may arise. :hi:

LOL! Easy for you to say! Us in the city are going to have to bug out on our HAWKS etc. with all the weapons and ammo we can carry amidst the hordes! Hope you all got your performance mods right!

You better start modding. You need to get it up to 88mph. :hehe:

Speaking of old 80's classics: What if Stacy's mom was really Jesse's girl, and her number was 867-5309?

On to the original question, an EMP will (theoretically) only damage anything in operation, and likely only to the point of requiring a restart/reset. There's a really good book series by William R Forstchen called One Second After (the next book is One Minute After, and the last book is The Final Hour) that details the overall breakdown of a rational society after an EMP. Another good read is Patriots by John Wesley Rawles (I think it's John, it may be James). Personally, we're not really worried about toilet paper, we have plenty of old T-shirts that we can cut up into conveniently sized squares and after use run them through the washing machine with a little bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Paper towels are the same thing, we've switch to dish towels whenever possible and just use a new one every day. Water is still flowing out of the taps, and we can filter/distill that if things get really bad. We have a few cases of bottled water, and a few gallons of distilled water for the Keurig. Plenty of band-aids and antibiotic ointment, and a few military first aid kits laying around. Bottom line, not really worried about much, honestly. I'm much more concerned about the kids that are out of school and either a) out and about raising hell, or b) not sure where their next meal is coming from since school was where they got breakfast and lunch. Not really sure where this is all going or what the next couple of weeks looks like, but the sun is shining, and there's gas in the tank. Maybe go for a ride and just breathe for a bit, guys. Stay safe out there, and remember to wash your hands.

Fortschen’s book series on societal breakdown after a major EMP strike was awesome. It was an eye-opening read for many.

Setting up a means to time the points would be hell, and the electrical system would likely fry the condensers pretty quick. Unless your bike is set up to run points (this is where I should be out in the workshop getting the CB450 knocked back together instead of haunting around the forum), then I would say stick with what it was designed to run.

I'm in the middle of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand at the moment, it's probably my fifth or sixth time reading this book, but I always seem to take something new away from it. I also really enjoy the Dragon Riders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey, but that's likely because I grew up in Britain, and she lived just a few villages away from us. When that gets old, I also have the Emberverse series by S.M. Stirling. The first book is "Dies the Fire" It's an absolutely amazing read, and you can pick it up on Amazon for a few bucks. Worth every penny, and I highly recommend it. After that, we have the old standbys: Dune, Children of Dune, Dune Messiah, Lord of the Rings, Count of Monte Cristo, Three Musketeers, The whole Tom Clancey Jack Ryan series, and a great series by W.E.B. Griffen called the Presidential Agent novel. Also have a bunch of other odds and ends books, and we have enough DVD's to keep a theater company in business. Just got word from my in-laws in Vegas that they have shut the entire city down. All the casinos are closed for 30 days, and they're implementing a curfew. This is really getting crazy.

I'm willing to bet that not enough people have read it. Given the fact that there's not a roll of toilet paper anywhere, I'd say that hardly anyone has taken the time to educate themselves about what it takes to get by in this type of situation.

This. Interesting how toilet paper is the first thing people (Americans) think of when the threat of societal breakdown looms.

I have read One Second After and other similar books. Spare CDI ordered.

And who's setting off the EMP? :hmm:

Well if anyone is keeping up with what the Saudis are doing they're ramping up oil production to put the Russians in their place and force the US to curtail their shale oil production, which will eventually put them back at the top of the food chain. In the short term this means right now we're paying $2 a gallon and by the end of May it will be a dollar or less a gallon. In the long term we'll be back to paying almost $4 a gallon after the Saudis flush the Russians and Americans out. And you're worried about a virus and toilet paper? I'd worry about the economic ramifications of this media driven mass hysteria instead.

OneLeg - The actions of OPEC are important in the near-term, as gas prices will undoubtedly take a modest tumble because of production increases. With so many places being shut down at the moment, demand is undoubtedly going to increase because people are now much freer to move about (the exact OPPOSITE of what they should be doing!). As evidence of this, look at the stats for national park visits over the past two weeks. I think that lower fuel prices are going to be a big help for most people, but that demand will be strong enough to keep the Saudis from completely cratering the market, causing North American producers to idle their equipment and Britain's North Sea production to halt. Even if domestic/friendly country producers slow production, the equipment likely wouldn't be shut down, which means that when the Saudis and the other OPEC countries think they can cut production to prop up prices, we will be able to blunt the effect of that and control the rise instead of seeing a spike in the markets.
As for the hysterical media and all the panic buying, I have to say that I've been really disappointed in what's going on. I've taken some steps to capitalize on this, though. I started a refinance on my investment properties to bring my cost of ownership down. That's going to free up some capital every month to start looking for the next acquisition. The only thing I'm really doing differently is trying to do any shopping at off-hours whenever possible. I think the supply chain is going to catch up to demand in the next week or so, and once the shelves are restocked and everything LOOKS normal, people will begin to return to the normal consumer mentality. On top of that, the hysteric media will really have no choice but to start reporting on the recoveries instead of the fatalities and new cases (currently, this thing has a 96% recovery rate, with nearly every single fatality being someone with a pre-existing condition, or the very elderly), and that will also help fuel the return to normalcy. It should all work out and stabilize in a few weeks, and then it's just a matter of cleaning up the mess.

TOILET PAPER HOARDING

The toilet paper hoarding is a social "copy cat" purchase by Americans and truth be told "we" are buying it just because.

Its origins specific to COVID-19 come from Hong Kong, when supplies of medical masks evaporated, they began making their own masks from cloth and inserting toilet paper, or paper towels sandwiched in-between 2 layers of cloth as a "filter" of sorts.

When I was online at Costco the other day, 2 people in front of me had 2 bulk packages of Bounty paper towels ( toilet paper was sold out ).

Out of curiosity (and knowing the origins of 'why' from Asia), I asked both people why they were buying up so much paper towels and both essentially replied with some rendition of " because everyone else is"

Not everyone needs to be a "prepper" or a doomsday fear monger taking things over the top so soon, however EVERYONE should have a little common sense and maybe even a generic plan of sorts on how to hunker down for at least a week.

Just my views.....

This should be common sense. But it's not. Nobody should run their household on a "if we don't go to buy supplies every week we'll starve" model. No matter if there's a current crisis or not.

Not worried about point of origin. If somebody is worried about that, wear some gloves when it's opened, spray it down with alcohol or wipe it with anti-bacterial wipes, let it dry, good to go.

Great meme, btw.
