I live in buffalo ny and have registered both my china bikes here. A friend of mine recently told me that instead of spending almost $300 to register my apollo deluxe here in NY why not just register it online through Vermont and maybe later if I need to just transfer the plates. I have heard some people talk about this but I am not sure if it would be worth it. I think he said Vermont is way cheaper than the almost $300 NY charges. Im open to just doing it in NY and just bite the price bullet, I dont mind, as long as I get to ride. BUT if I can do Vermont , spend less fees and get to ride then id love that too! Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

Vermont is supposed to be pretty flexible with registration, but I've never done it myself.

Added Bonus you won’t have to go get a stupid inspection sticker every year, as long as you stay out of Vermont. I’m doing this on bikes from here out.
It’s hard to find an MC state inspection station around here. Last guy hit me $50 and never saw my bike, he just wanted my paperwork. I’m not gonna do that again.

i did something which i'm thinking is similar with my harbor freight trailer in maine.... ut there was a company you mailed everything off too...
i am certainly interested in NOT giving NY anymore of my money...

I saw this the other day while researching the same idea
http://www.chinonthetank.com/2014/04/get-a-title-with-a-vermont-registration/
Just curious about this. Do you need to get insurance through VT if you have a VT plate on your bike or can you still with whomever you're with already?

i would thin insurance is insurance but sometimes rules are funny....

Lots of people have, but I've only seen it on the internet. I'm going to do that eventually with an xr200 I have.

Hey everyone! I just said screw it and went the Vermont way. During these strange times I am not wanting to put I believe the lady said $289 into registering my bike here in NY. I did the paper work, wrote the $155 check and added the bill of sale to an envelope and mailed it off to Vermont a few minutes ago. I will make sure to update you guys on what happens, how it works and if everything goes smooth. To add to the madness DMVs in Buffalo are completely closed down as of a few days ago and in Vermont they are still open. I saw on a forum about the Vermont registration way saying that It takes a few weeks, so again ill update you guys!

Great! I read that they require proof that sales tax was paid. Was that proof on your bill of sale?

No sales tax on the bill of sale that they gave me, it has all other info and I paid the fee that the lady asked on the phone haha So I am hoping they dont need anymore info. She said they just need bill of sale so that they can see that I bought it from somewhere and that the total amount of money I paid showed up on the bill. In total she said just put bill of sale showing how much I paid for apollo and make sure it has a signature from vendor, a check for $155, and the Vermont registration form. Hopefully that does the trick!

Nope not that I know of...I mean if I never had an issue in strict NY state registering china bikes, I absolutely doubt Vermont will say anything to me because its a china bike. I also know that MANY people went this route! I would just say go for it. Only downfall is that you have to send in your stuff then wait like 2-4 weeks to get your plate. But to me its worth the wait and its also cold and rainy in Buffalo so I won't be riding anyway. Funny thing is I still have my plate from my Bashan but dont have my registration sticker on it so I don't want to chance being pulled over.

How fast was it for you? Because on some forums I read that its such a fast process because it only takes you 4 weeks to get a plate....in my world, thats not fast! haha its definitely worth it but holy heck I don t think thats fast at all.

How does the insurance work? Nys requires proof of insurance before registration. And what about inspection?

No clue. Lady just said as long as you have insurance of some sort I'm good and to just send in the paperwork. I have progressive . so maybe vermont does not need actual proof of insurance . she said everything i need will be in package. So that's what I'll bank on. Sad to say but even living in NY I have NEVER had an inspection sticker on my bikes and ive been riding here about3-5 years. Not saying its correct to do but as long as you have a plate and your registration sticker..ive never heard of a cop pulling someone on a bike over because they can't see an inspection sticker although maybe it happened plenty of times! Haha I'm just lucky

not really sure why you guys are having issues with plating bikes in NY, my Roketa cost me like $97 for title and $24 tax total.... least theres one perk to buying a bike in pieces...you get it cheap...LOL tax might be where they hit you?

Never had a problem plating my bikes here Bogie! I just got sick of getting a new bike then having to pay almost $300 to register it. Vermont was only $155 and their dmvs were open. All the DMV in buffalo are closed, so I figured id go the vermont route for my apollo, for the sake of money and also time because they dont know when DMV will be back open. Youre correct about the taxes though, I wish I still had my receipt from a few years ago, if I remember correctly the taxes on my bashan storm that I paid I think 1700 for were insane.

Lucky you bogie! Ive registered 2 bikes here..first bike was 280something second was 230something. I was not about to chance that again! I hear what you're saying about the tax but all in all I still had to pay quite a bit. They said new plates new registration and new bike. Said that NY state has to have certain percent taxes on the bikes. Not sure if its just china bikes though. I remember being so upset swiping my card. Either way I'm fine with trying vermont! I'm in no rush , if it works, awesome! If not they said they will send check and paperwork back..then I'll bite the bullet and register in buffalo haha

There are different laws that apply for cars. The way I understand it is that (for motorcycles, at least), they don't title anything over 30 years old or under 300ccs, you get a registration slip, that can be transferred into a title in another state. Also, you don't have to be a state resident to title them. That's why a lot of people do VT titling.

Ummm
what are you putting in the Vermont License # block?
I looked online and VT licenses have 8 numbers (12345678) but my old (but still good) NY license has 9.
Thanks! I was going to go to the VT DMV officer but they are closed like everything else these days....

They said to either put your NY license number then NY at the end of it, or your social. You can choose!

Guess it comes with the territory of growing up in C(r)ook county IL, aka south side of chicago... NY dmv is a breeze compared to dealing with the chicago DMV... if you didnt cross a T or dot an I (literally, not figuratively) they would reject everything and tell you to leave...LOL
As for registering my car, once again, pays to buy stuff in pieces..... buy a car for $250 that needs work and register it... LOL only get taxed on the 250 purchase price...

Vermont just sent back all of my information I was off on the tax calculation I was supposed to pay $155.94 and I only had a check in there for $155 so they sent everything back told me that I had to pay the correct amount and send everything back then they will send out my plate but at this point it took so long to even get this mail back that I might just bite the bullet and go pay $285 at my New York DMV

Ive used Vermont to title a bike whose title vanished a long time ago. It does work. The hardest part is VIN verification and having it done correctly. Some states are easier than others to get an acceptable VIN verification done.
FYI. There isn't a ton of information about doing it everywhere for a reason. Please use this responsibly or they will take it away.
