View Full Version : TBR7 Stalls Today?

NY hit 70 degrees today.
Took the TBR7 out for a ride and she stalled 4 times whenever I began slowing to a stop in 1st gear ( for a stop sign or red light ).
I have the idle down fairly lowish ( 1500 RPMs ) ...never an issue before and certainly she doesn't sputter out sitting in Neutral at idle.
Any thoughts ? CDI maybe? 900 kilometers on the bike so far.

Starting to sound like me now with the random stalls! Cdi or ignition coil could be the problem. I ordered a new coil and ive been testing with a multi meter . I would say if you have ruled out everything else, you should definitely check out your CDI and or ignition coil and coil wires.

Could the clutch simply be out of adjustment?

How rich are you jetted? As the temps come up you run richer due to the less dense air.

1500 is not a low idle. That is exactly what you idle should be.
Does it start right back up after it stalls?
Does the bike judder, shake, shimmy, pull, or make any strange noises?
If you pop it into neutral while coming to a stop does it also stall, or only in gear?

Slightly rich on the jetting but still in the ok range - I will inspect plug today
I was going to pull the CDI and check with multi meter
Dan - answers as follows:
-Starts right back up after stall - after I pop in Neutral
-No strange noises, shutters, pulls - when she idled she seemed close to stall, so I adjusted idle screw by 1/4 turn after I got home ( no test drive to see if that fixed issue )
-Only stalls in gear - on a stalled roll to a stop, I popped into Neutral and started it up.
Only had the problem after 20 mins of riding

Tested a few things
Battery voltage is good, spark is good ( strong )
I can start and kill the bike 15 times with no issue and it is a very strong start.
NO startup issues and no misfires or rough running.
Scratching my head - the bike will run just fine but I've lost a bit of trust and fearful to stray too far from home.

I know you said you're a little rich before BUT maybe that could be the problem. On my storm 250 when I was too rich after the bike for hot after 30 or so minutes it would just die. Id be on the side of the road for 10 minutes..then it started back up and I could ride home. Check that jetting, definitely can't hurt. I took have lost trust in my apollo because of the same issues.

Those are my clues. I think you have a combination of two things at play here.
1. Your idle mixture is probably off a little causing the idle to be a little soft. Too much fuel will often cause the idle to be "weaK" in terms of power. If you want to really test this, see if the bike will pull you along in first gear at idle. Even my Hawk with my fat butt and the taller gearing will pull me along (it does struggle a little, but... fat butt lol.)
2. Only stalls in gear, and only after riding for 20 minutes.
Cutch drag caused by clutch fade once the bike is up to temp.
If it doesn't stall rolling in netural and coming to a stop, nor does it stall at a dead idle for a long time, OR stall if you blip the throttle. that rules out quite a bit. The only variable here is that it is in gear, so it is fighting against a mechanical force.
If you have an "off" idle mixture and just the right amount of clutch drag caused by clutch fade, it is possibly the cause for your issue.
My suggestion for your next ride. After you ride it for said 20 minutes, the next time it stalls out, adjust the clutch at the lever. Just back that adjuster out a turn or two and reduce the free play a bit. See if it does it again after that.
That is my theory at least.

Took TeeBee out for a spin, not exactly duplicate conditions as outside temps today were 66 compared to 78 yesterday
Dan - took the bike to a parking lot to see if she would pull in 1st at idle, she coughed and sputtered out to a stall within about 3 seconds.
Turned the idle screw conservatively 1/2 turn and repeated the test and she pulled at idle... barely ( I go 220 myself )...she was coughing and dragg-a$$in but she pulled me around the parking lot with no stall.
Backed the clutch adjustor ( at the handle ) barely 1/2 hair turn anyway - I felt it was ready for an adjustment and a bit too mushy as is.
Rode the bike for 20 mins HARD, found a long run strip with little traffic and ran a bunch of high speed passes ( 55mph WOT LOL) in 5th gear to really get the temps up on the bike.
No stall. Can I call 'er fixed ? Maybe :hmm:
MESSAGE TO DAN - Ever consider a Patreon account? , I know you help for the love of the game and the brotherhood and certainly I'm not advocating that you pimp yourself out for coin..... BUT, when you help somebody out, I'm sure on their own good will they would consider funding a Patreon for the help. A few times now, I would have thrown some coin your way simply on my own desire to do right.
Something to consider...

That resistance to die is basically what mine does. I have 50lbs on you lol.

Not Fixed, just adjusted right. If you ever need to, just fullow the TT250 tutorial on clutch adjustment. The way I ended up setting my Hawk was to where it was honestly almost too tight, but not tight enough to cause any clutch slip. I then just take it easy until the bike got up to temp. That solved most of my issues with clutch fade/drag. Otherwise, I would have to adjust it at the lever all the time.

That's a rabbit hole I just don't want or need to go down. I enjoy helping other people figure out problems. Troubleshooting issues with machines is literally what I do for a living because it comes naturally to me and I like doing it. I enjoy the challenge, and the reward of getting something working again.

You are a gentleman and a scholar and I thank you.
Another 1 hour ride today and no stall.
Clutch definitely changes feel after about 20-30 mins.
As a new rider and a 1st time bike owner, clutch fade is probably overlooked on these bikes.
I'm mulling over the oil cooler - seems like an easy mod and reasonably priced item.
Decisions decisions.... :hmm:
