View Full Version : Exhaust drilling

I have seen a few references to drilling out the exhaust pipe. Looking at pictures from the net, it looked to me like the Lifan bikes have a small exhaust opening. My Tank does not feel, to me at least, very restricted. I would like to see a pic of a Lifan and Rocketta exhaust tip to compare to what is on my Tank.
Here it is

If I remember correctly Dad made an extension bit about 14-16" long at a 5/8" diameter. That got both the baffles with a straight shot from the pipe to the end of the exhaust. I think Flashby cut the end of his and gutted it then weld the end back on. That would ensure there is the least restriction with the stock pipe. Dad and I are pretty satisfied with the performance as is, so I doubt we'll be doing anything else. Both Dad and I have seen 80 on the speedo, but we know it reads about 5mph fast so 75mph. Before I don't think it would have gone 70mph with the stock pipe undrilled nor did it want to pull when going up hills and such.

It is about the same size but it is offset to one side on my Lifan GY-5.
There is a big flat area next to it and I just took a 1" drill to it and cut a second hole.
Makes a much nicer deeper sound and works well with the UNI pod air filter. I noticed a difference right away when I cut the hole. It definitely wound out a little better. (Indicating that there is a little better fuel/air flow through the system).
If I can get a picture tonight, I will post it.

PIPE UPDATE: Just got my YZ250F pipe delivered from eBay. I will tear apart the Roketa this weekend and see what all it's gonna take to slap it on there. Can't wait to hear it run with this big throaty pipe on there. I got a pic in my gallery here. How the hell do I post it to this forum?

Here is the exhaust in a Lifan GY-5.
The small pipe coming out is the standard hole. Small and restrictive.
I drilled a second hole above it. Sounds good and improved running.
(kind of a crappy picture; the camera focused on the wheel :( )

My bike is fairly loud right now, what did drilling do to the sound levels?

It made it sound like a motorcycle instead of a cross between a singer sewing machine and a 2.5hp briggs and stratton.
It is louder but not as loud as my Vulcan 500 or Ninja 250 stock exhaust.
It is not as loud as the old 2 stroke 125/250's I used to own.
I think it is at a nice snarl level. It is louder than my DR650. Not as deep just a little louder.
And no baffles were removed. Instead of PUFF, PUFF, PUFF it goes RMM, RMM, RMM.
When I did it I figured I could always have it welded back closed if I didn't like it.

Guys, I think you're all barking up the wrong tree cutting your tailpipes. My other bike, a MZ Skorpion Sport which has 3 times the cc and power has an equally small tailpipe exit. Have a look inside of your front pipes, mine had a VERY lumpy and uneven weld, and when cleaned up made a noticable improvement.
