I'm new to owning and working on OHVs. I am trying to change the ratio of my stock chain and sprockets, as I heard it would provide much needed torque for hills. I don't have a lot of cash right now, so I was thinking of just changing the front sprocket to an 11 tooth. Would this work?

And then when I get more cash change to a 37 tooth rear.
Thanks, I'm new to all this.

In order to get the gear ratio I wanted I switched to a 428 chain, a 40 tooth rear sprocket from a Taotao ATA250D, and a 12 tooth front. Perfect for the riding I do.

I was aiming for a 3.3 ratio also based on post searches I found of yours and a few others. But whats the 438 chain. Is that smaller links than the stock?

Yes, 428 chain has smaller links. Also note that the 12 tooth sprocket cannot be mounted with the standard locking ring. It'll need a spacer and snap ring instead.

Do you know where to buy steel rear sprockets for the rhino?

I ordered it from Taotao's parts place, I think it's called parts kit.com. Stock sprocket for a Taotao ATA250d which was the predecessor to the Rhino. 40 tooth steel, about $20 when I bought one a few years ago.

I assume if I change to a larger sprocket, I will need a new larger chain? How do you know what size to buy? Say I go with the 11/37 in 530 chain. How does that change from stock?

I can't tell you how many links you'll need for the 530 setup but the 428 setup on mine uses 118 links.

Ok, you convinced me. I'm going with the 428 chain 118 links, sprocket 12 front/40 rear.
What kind of retaining device do I need for the front sprocket?

For the 12 tooth 428 front sprocket you'll need a spacer to fit behind it. I cut the teeth off an old sprocket, it makes a perfect spacer and prevents anything from rubbing on the seal. Then you'll need a snap ring to hold the new sprocket on the countershaft. I fit 2 standard snap rings into the groove. I vaguely remember the snap rings being 5/8" but best measure to be sure. They aren't a tight fit but they don't need to be.
