I just remembered that for the third time now I have forgotten to disconnect my battery when I left the motorcycle for a long period of time.

Ugh.

Somehow the lithium battery survives. I guess the BMS takes care of it.

Sucks though. Will have to jumpstart it yet again

It does. Once a certain pack voltage is reached, the BMS shuts off the output to prevent damage to the cells.


Do you have some kind of massive parasitic load? I leave my lithium battery unattended in my KLR all winter without incident, every year.

Yes. The ECU seems to stay on as a small parasitic load unfortunately. Wish it just blanked out when you turned the bike off for a while and shut down.

It seems to take about 2-3 months to drain the battery

Did you add an aftermarket USB port? Some will drain the battery if they are not switched.

You can fix that problem with a some work. The Team figured out you need a disconnect switch to isolate the battery. We couldn't find a switch that took up little space or would allow the proper thickness so we took two pieces of 8 gauge home depot wire and soldered connectors on each end. One mounted to the negative terminal of the battery, the other to the negative wiring connection. Ran it down to right above the starter and put a bolt through the 8 mm connector on each wire and tightened it. When we store the bike we unbolt it and use a piece of rubber hose to make sure they do not make contact. Works great and its out where you do not have to take the seat off to mess with it. It also will play havoc with someone trying to steal it!


A lithium battery does not need to be charged all the time it just needs to be prevented from being drained.
