OK, my new 08 LF200GY should be here in about 10 working days and I will be using this bike mainly as a commuter and trail bike for camping. I will need to be carrying a lot of stuff no matter what version of riding I am doing. I would like to put some saddle bags/boxes on my bike to accomplish this.

Can you please post photos of your saddle bag/box setup along with how you got things to fit?

Thanks...

I will take a look again at my local walmart to see if they have restocked.

I have bought four so far and shipped off 3 of them to others here.

The last one was $17.88 plus tax.

If you walmart has ATV accessories they probably have the seat cover.

I would like to see some photos of people's bikes with fuel cans attached because I'm planning hurricane evacuation and I want to put a 3 gallon or more tank on the rack. That would give me a 300-mile range to get out of the way of any hurricane.

Kawa did you make the mounts or did you buy them? Can you post some detailed instructions. I would like to use your method.

There's a chunk of metal welded in between the rails of the luggage rack on the side, with bolt holes drilled in it. This makes a bracket on the luggage rack.

I have a 15/16ths threaded rod that I cut up. I have a nut and washer on each side of this that secures it to the luggage rack bracket.

The other end of the 15/16ths rod is welded to some scrap metal that my cousin had lying around. That's the bracket that the bags attach to. There are 4 8mm bolts, one in each corner of that bracket, that secure the bag to that bracket.

To quickly remove the bags, I remove the 15/16ths nuts from the luggage rack bracket. It's a very effective/quick setup.

Any more questions? Was that clear?

Speed where did you get the tank bags?

I purchased ATV Logic brand bags from JcW at the same time I got the trunk. I think they were $20-25..and free shipping since I was ordering other stuff.

I looked at all my local shops first though...hoping to find a set I could look at before buying, but as luck would have it, I didn't find any until after mine arrived...and they were in my closest "redneck" Wal-Mart. Good looking bags, better price....not sure if they fit as well though.

The bags are designed for ATV's, so you'll need to keep that in mind during a search.

Hope that helps. :)

I used some j-shaped bolts found at tractor supply I think.

Just hooked them around the factory rack. Two at the back and one at the front.

http://www.chinariders.net/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=5541&g2_serialNumber=2

Required about 2 minutes of drilling and I used a grinder to cut the excess off the bolts.

katoranger
06-21-2008, 05:36 PM
Mine is attached directly to the rack itself. No additional support pieces used.

The plastic is pretty ridgid and the bottom is sturdy. I put over a 100lbs of stuff in there. I don't recommend trying that. I have also strapped many items to it.

It has taken falls and hits and still looks good.

Looks good jayg. One thing you may want to do is add some fender washers to the inside of your action packer. It will help destribute the pull a little better.I put cross braces totaly across the inside from bolt to bolt to help distribute the pull.
I like the way you attached it.Good job.Another Katorised bike....

Thanks :)

On the trunk..to be honest, I haven't used it enough to really form an opinion. I do have the medium, and it will NOT hold my helmet...so I can understand wanting the larger size. I had some reservations about the mounting plate, which is part of the reason for me ordering the medium, but if I had it to do over again, I would more seriously consider the larger model.

Hope that helps...

Do you think a larger one than the one you have would be too big or still OK? I'm really leaning towards the larger of the two. Thanks for your input.

kczukiman - I do like that a little more than the way I have my action packer attached. I need to go to a Ace and see what they have to add to my configuration.

I need this box to be really sturdy because it will carry my computer and stuff on my daily commute. Loosing it mid way will not be nice. $2700.00 to replace my Mac Book Pro...not so good.

Kato and kczukiman - I was wondering how do you lock your trunk? I tried a long shaft mater lock and I could not get it close? I also tried a waterproof master short shaft lock and I could not get it through the hole.

Please do tell...

Thanks.

katoranger
06-25-2008, 10:06 AM
I used just a couple old master locks. Tight fit on the hole, but it worked.

You could probably drill the hole slightly bigger.

I don't usually lock it. Nothing of much value in there. I have used them when I left itin a parking lot for an extended period and also for a helmet lock.

SpeedSouth - does your box block any of your tail/brake light?

I was thinking of ordering that box as well and am worried that it may prevent people from seeing my lights.

How about you action packers, have you noticed if this is a problem?

I posted this pic in a similar thread a while back. These are XLS brand bags off of E-bay, they cost under $50... I'm not so sure they were worth it as I've had to repair them several times (I don't mind, with an awl it only takes a few minuets). They are actually way too big. Seriously, I could carry a weeks worth of laundry in them and still have room for groceries! They do fit the bike very well though.

OK Guys, here my luggage. It looks very much like kczukiman's, just the mounting is different. Same boxes, but I gave mine 3 coats of spray on truck bed liner (wally world). It hold up pretty good to dings, but really shows off dust. I might try the roll on next time. Or, I might buy the camo version of the boxes if I can find them cheap enough.

http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1pUTfBKtn2vjLol188OFdCdiaQ6fVt8W-f_SSP3ERt0ZZSPG8U1KdDFc5yJZp9fi9U

I bent some steel strap to fit over my rack, and attached the strap using these:
http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1p-SOtTUrMTwXWMJ_78IwaCJFCWF2Yi_0tdEhc7-wFwBr2gRaltzP0J2PEhMyP48lM

The boxes are just bolted to the strap. I used big fender (could probably be bigger) washers:
http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1p3-DL7st8ISkXl5TF_Fd9TeFG2iPLuNrvCkE1KjsGytloRaxAVSdF JrO_x2YDn3Sk

To finish I added a cross bar between the two boxes, and top it off with some self-sticky reflectors (you can see where the clamps are attached to the rack, they're the shiny bolts):
http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1pa6BIMQvrMwS_u6L3qTrZGL8EFDkUUsPHe5NbeJJ7J5i_30u EyjsUkdCsJE-dQH0E

Overall I think they look pretty good. I'll have to see how they hold up though...

http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1pWUcEYhmljDpzZIuZCrlvhhtKeEh4YMC5FvaKyUe0rWiosYv oT5N-iFvQVpqhKR5h

Total cost about $50, but could be done for less if you just buy what you need. i bought a lot of everything.
