Hawk dlx Fuel System Flooding

Was working fine until I put gas in it at a pump. I tried to start it and it didn’t work then fuel started poring out of something under the tank. I then pulled out the air filter and the air box was flooded as well as the whole engine. I let it drain until the gas was at about 1/5 tank at which point it started. I thought it was fine until i put more gas in it and then it all repeated. I’m not a mechanic yet so I’d deeply appreciate any insight. Someone told me an injector might be faulty but why is it only starting on a near empty tank? Please help before I buy unneeded parts :hmm:

It's not a bad idea that the injector isn't closing. It is a little odd that it closes when there isn't much fuel in the tank since the pump should create about the same fuel pressure from full to empty, but I guess that's possible.

A new injector costs $50, and it will probably fix your bike. But...

You can pull the injector out and inspect it before buying anything. You can bench test it with a 12v source to see if it clicks open when powered, then clicks closed when power is removed, but that might not really be informative since the bike runs with low fuel level in the tank (must be closing).

If you connect the power lead (two wire connector that powers it when installed), but with the injector removed, it should not leak gas when you turn the key on. It SHOULD leak (spray) intermittently when you press the starter button. Chances are you can feel the injector cycling on and off (clicking) when you press the starter. It should stop leaking when you stop pressing the starter. The key obviously needs to be on for this testing but it won't start since the injector is not in the throttle body. The purpose here is to see if the fuel keeps leaking through the injector when pressurized (key on). You might have to open the injector (by pressing the starter button) then turn off the key and see if the injector leaks out the residual pressure, or just keeps leaking with key left on but no starter button pressed. That is, the injector is supposed to be closed if the key is turned on but the starter is not pressed.

If it continuously leaks before you press the starter button, then I would agree it is probably a bad injector (can't close completely with a full tank).

That does not explain why it doesn't when the tank is low since the fuel pump should not provide more pressure when it is full. But it could.

If the injector can't close effectively with a full tank, it may need replacing. If a new injector can't stay closed, then the fuel pump might be providing too much pressure.

That's a lot of work testing. A new $50 injector isn't a bad idea. It could save you a lot of trouble ;)

I tested the injector and its spraying fuel just fine and didn’t leak or anything. It still leaks out of the cylinder part under the tank though. I think it’s the fuel pump? It has 2 ports for fuel lines and an open port

The fuel pump on the Lifan KPX250 and the Paladin 300 both have one single fuel connection at the fuel pump, and one wiring connection (2 wire power connection). There isn't a "cylinder part" visible from the outside of the tank. There is a seal around the rectangular mounting plate of the fuel pump between the plate and the tank. On these bikes, it could leak on that mounting plate, or if the seal on that ONE single fuel connection fails.

On these Lifan and Zuma bikes, there is only that one port for fuel, not "2 ports for fuel lines and an open port". I guess someone with a DLX hawk with the cylinder part, and the 2 ports and an open port will have to help you out. I guess the DLX Hawk has a different type of fuel pump.

Like i said I’m not a mechanic, I don’t know what any of this is. No need to be a smart ass I just want my bike fixed.

Not being a smartass. It just sounds different based on your description. As I said, there is only one fuel line coming out of the fuel pump on the KPX and on the Paladin. Both are on the left bottom of the fuel tank. What you describe sounds different. There is a fuel sender on the KPX for the fuel gauge that the KPX has, but that is a wiring connection, not a fuel line.

Can you post a photo of what you are describing?

Also, you mentioned the air filter was flooded. I thought you meant inside the air box. Maybe you meant it it on the outside of the engine and air box.

If it is leaking inside the air box, it could be the injector. It the gasoline is on the outside of the engine and air box, it could be the seal around the fuel pump on the tank, or a fuel line. Or maybe a crack in the tank that is leaking?

The cylinder thing under the fuel tank is emissions equipment. It is the charcoal canister. It recirculates fumes from The fuel tank back to the throttle body. The fuel pump is inside the tank.
