I've been tearing my hair out for a while with this so decided to sign up here.
I'm designing a road legal light quadracycle in the UK for a 16 year old to drive.
Legally it can only have a 50cc engine until they reach 17. In terms of design I'm thinking along the lines of Gordon Murrays rocket but smaller, with an aircraft canopy and windscreen for all weather use.
I'm planning to use a horizontal Honda clone engine and mount a peerless differential piggyback on the engine using side plates sandwiched between the crankcase and outer casings. Reverse gear isn't legally required but would be desirable.
50cc engines are definitely available with reverse gear but unless I've screwed which is entirely possible, I can only find ones with a single forward and reverse gear. Ideally I'd like as many forward gears as possible.
The only engines I've been able to find with multiple forward gears + reverse seem to start at 110cc. If the engine and gearbox combo I want don't exist, how feasible would it be to fit the gearbox cluster I want to the 50cc engine or alternatively fit a 50cc crank and cylinder barrel and possibly the head to the 110+cc crankcase?
That also brings me onto a second question, would cylinder heads from larger displacement engines have bigger valves and thus could be used as an upgrade on a smaller engine?
Out of interest does a 4 valve head exist?
Thanks in advance.
