The front brake on my GY-5 is screaming now, it squeals so bad. So I am going to do the cutting down to size like I should have a thousand kms ago.
For those of you who have done this before - what should I look out for? Anything? Or is it straightforward?

I cut mine. it works rather well. I now only have a slight amount of brake noise maby 5% of what I had. I used a hack saw and only removed a slight amount of material so I maintained the circuler shape.
get some disc brake silent and put as much as you can in the calipers and on the side of the pucks when you are installing. just make sure and avoid the rotor surface.

Don't squeeze the brakes when the pads are out, or the resevoir cover is off.
I've seen a guy put a block of wood behind the brake handle so he couldn't squeeze the handle.
I did the same thing and the noise came back. Check out my post on the AL forum:

My noise came back too but not as bad with the overhang filed off.
