Let me start with hello.....
hope to help you guys out some day also.
Recently i bought a small chinese quad from a friend really chep ($60) because he couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.
it cranks but does not start.
after about 2 days of messing with it i got it to start but i still don't know what is wrong with it.
when it started i removed this bolt and it started right up, when i put it back, it doesn't run.

When i remove the bolt this cover pops out a little and rotates slowly

Also when it is on, it only runs with the choke on, if i take it off it dies immediately.

Could it be the timing, valves or a bad carb?
I have been reading a lot on these and i was thinking the valves might be too tight.
thank you

Sounds like you need to clean the carb if it only runs on choke.

Not really sure why removing that bolt makes any difference. I think the round cover may be where the cam is located.

Leave the engine alone and focus on the carb.

It does sound like a fuel/air mixture problem.

Have you taken the carb off and cleaned it out really good ?

Have you checked to see if the fuel is flowing properly to the carb ?

Have you checked to see if the air filter is clean and functional ?

Are the valves adjusted properly ?

What all have you done/tried on it so far ?

Can you post pics of it, I love pictures.

Leave the engine alone and focus on the carb.

It does sound like a fuel/air mixture problem. I HAVE TWO OTHER QUADS I'M GOING TO TRY AND SWAP CARBS SE IF IT WORKS

Have you taken the carb off and cleaned it out really good ? YES

Have you checked to see if the fuel is flowing properly to the carb ? YES i TOOK IT OFF AND MADE SURE IT WAS CLEAN AND FLOAT WASN'T STUCK SHUT.

Have you checked to see if the air filter is clean and functional ? YES

Are the valves adjusted properly ? WILL CHECK THE VALVES I JUST LEARNED HOW TO DO THIS IN THIS FORUM (THANKS)

What all have you done/tried on it so far ?

Can you post pics of it, I love pictures. WILL DO

Have you checked to see if the fuel is flowing properly to the carb ? YES i TOOK IT OFF AND MADE SURE IT WAS CLEAN AND FLOAT WASN'T STUCK SHUT.Actually was wondering if you pulled the fuel line from the carb and made sure you had a good steady stream of gas thru the hose.
Anyway it sounds like you have fuel going into the carb.

How about the spark plug is it new ? and gapped right ? good solid spark ?
How many turns out is the air/fuel mixture screw ?(1-3/4 to 2-1/4) and where is the needle set in the carb ?

When you checked/cleaned the carb did you blast carb cleaner thru every little hole you could find and see if/where it came out ?

also have you checked to see if the exhaust is somehow restricted ? is it a one piece exhaust or can you take it apart in the middle ? if you can take it apart do so and try starting if briefly with just the header pipe on.

Sorry for so many questions but they are all pieces of the puzzle.

I got home yesterday and checked the valves. They were so tight it wasn't even funny. Thats why when i loosed the bottom cam bolt it would run. I guess the valves weren't closing all the way so no vaccum for gas or compression for starting. after i set them to .5 and .8 it starts great and idles.
here are some pictures
i'll add more when i have it all put together.

I see that you have the proper tools for the job. NEVER attempt to work on one of these things without a 25 lb. dumbell handy! :D

I do hope that you know how to use that specialty tool properly, though.

Let's review:

1st: Insert a screwdriver into any screw, anywhere on the bike and turn in any direction. Attempt to start bike. If it doesn't start, move on to plan B:

B): Turn various knurled adjusters and check tire pressure.

If that doesn't work:

C): Pick up 25 lb. dumbell and raise and lower it 6 times while contemplating the girl nextdoor.

Take dumbell and strike bike at various critical points. Thisd usually solves the problem. If problem still persists....see Dr. Sigmund Klemmermeister's authoritative work on the proper use of the sledgehammer.
