View Full Version : Riding on the Property In Pemberton

Hey China Riders,

Had a good couple days riding around the 36 acres in Pemberton. Took some pictures to share with you this evening of the Quads and the Yamaha in action -- Not to mention the 55km/hr capable Belgian Shepherd. I once thought the dog's favourite thing in the world was his ball, but I have now changed my mind and think it is motorized vehicles that dad(me) is on.

The China Quads have helded up 'okay'. Other than they both rattle and squeak like crazy even with my little kids on them. The 110cc Mini Beast (blue in the photos) threw the chain late today, after two solid days of riding and bouncing over rough grass. This is the second time it has done that, and I will look at the alignment tomorrow when re-installing it.

The 50cc dropped the negative battery cable and of course lost the hardware in the grass somewhere. Needle in a haystack finding those dinky things. This is the second Gio I have seen do this, and I had to rig it up to work again which I'm not happy with. I'm in a small little town and I try as I might couldn't find anything at the local shops to fix it properly. I will post in the ATV forum more about this problem. Photos below:

My littlest one on her pink 50cc.

..and my favourite picture. My little one looks like she's dug in for high speed action, when really the dog is galloping and I'm trying to keep the bike from stalling. The photog made us look fast though!

Thanks for sharing the photos!

When you check the sprocket alignment, please remove the rear shock and see if you have much side-to-side play. Excessive play indicates worn swingarm bushings.

Regarding the battery cables, I swap the original nuts for nyloc nuts where possible.

Cheers!

Funny you should mention nyloc. The only place I could find open yesterday was a home hardware, so I grabbed a nyloc nut that fit the screw, and of course i it would not fit inside the battery terminal. An exercise in miniaturization!

There is a Stihl dealer in town who sells Can-Am ATV's but he was closed yesterday, I will try to head up there today to see if he has small fasteners.

I will check the swing arm bushings and hope they hold for the week. Don't want to do major repairs in the bush! :-)

Left swingarm bushing done in. Went to replace, put new Gio one in that came with the parts kit, went to reinstall bolt and wouldn't go in! Realized I only packed parts for the 50cc, thinking they would be the same size, but noooo... different size bolt/inside diameter. Crappy for the kid really, hitting up another motorcycle shop tomorrow to see if they have something that fits.

When you say "done in", does that mean that they came apart? If not, you can reassemble the swingarm and bolt and crank up the nut. That's not advisable for someone with any amount of mass, but it'll be fine for your daughter for now. As an extra measure, you could double-nut the swingarm to keep the bolt tight.

Good luck.

Hi Weldandgrind,

The rubber on the bushing was pushed so far in that it was almost gone up to the metal casing, and when I took it out the inner 'tube' just fell out. It was not re-usable. The right side is fine.

I took it to a motorcycle shop today, and he cut a piece of radiator hose and jammed it into the casing, and then slid the metal tube inside the hose. It worked like a hot damn really. Not sure how long it will last but it's installed and is working so far...

I did the same thing to a shock bushing on the night before a poker run and it got us through the ride, but that was it. That said, I'm sure that my son was much harder on his dirt bike shock than your girls are on their quad swingarms.

I hope that you have some luck at a local bike dealership. If not, I would seek out some sealed bearings and stack them until the desired width is achieved. Costly but more permanent than heater hose.

Stupidly the heater hose is probably tougher due to the stitching inside than that flakey rubber in the originals.

Don't want to leave it there for long but wanted something to finish off the week so she could keep riding. After this she probably won't be on it again for a 3 weeks to a month...gives me some time for a better repair.

It's funny because the girls don't seem as eager to ride unless I am on my bike with them.. I think that is cool in a way, however sometimes dad wants to sit back, have a barley sandwich and enjoy watching them. Also harder to supervise them when I'm on the YZ...as you all know, when you're saddled in it's hard not to open 'er up!!

Ooops...

Same thing here really, my oldest was trying to keep up with me, hit a large bump and it bucked her off. I didn't even know it happened since my wife rescued her. I was off trying to hit third in a short space!

That'll change as your kids get older. My son tries really hard to outpace me now. My daughter still rides relatively cautiously, but she's gaining confidence.

Until then, Dads need some open throttle time. We accomplish that with FRS radios; if one of us intends to ride solo, he/she must take a radio and check in occasionally. We must also know the intended route.

FRS radios would be fun toys to boot!

Weldangrind what is everyone in your family riding now? I remember you were selling some of your rides. I'm curious what you have everyone bombing around on?

You hijacked your own thread; that's funny! :D

I have an XR250 that is still in pieces (but not for long), my son will ride my old PE175 until he buys something newer, my wife rides a 200 Gio Beast quad and my daughter rides a 150 Gio Monster quad.

We still have a hot rodded 50 dirt bike for sale.

Well you know I was just curious! :)

I'm trying to figure out what to get my wife.. she would like a utility style quad, but anything Jap is through the roof expensive and with the amount she would ride it I cannot justify that kind of cost.. I'm a little unsure of the 'larger' china quads like the Gio Bad Boy etc. It is one thing to be wrenching little things on 300 dollar kid toys, but another to drop 1000+ and still be wrenching!

Hi John,

My wife is a professional photographer. She was just snapping shots of us while we rode. I believe the camera is a Canon 40D, and it was equipped with a Canon L Series Lens. (Long heavy bugger). The photos have been quickly worked on in Photoshop, mainly to crop and resize as they would be massive otherwise.

She's extremely talented, if I can be a tad biased. :)

Not quite that small...

The Pemberton in question is in beautiful British Columbia. At least the British part is consistent.
