View Full Version : Mono Shock Replacement

I rode my Chinese copy just a little too hard. I have a gy-200 2005. The bike as served me well and I have had no problems until now. I hit a hill just a little to hard and over extended the Mono shock in the rear and it is now broken at it weakest point at the top near the top eye. I welded it and I was sure it was going to hold but no luck. It will not hold and needs replacing. I have found no information on a suitable replacement. The shock is around 11 1/2 inches eye to eye which is a rough guess since mine is damaged. The shock can be or was adjustable. The top eye and bottom eye are the same size and I am sure they are metric but close to 1/2 an inch in diameter. Has anyone found a replacement?

keep us posted if you decide to start testing the ones from the xr200.
I just happen to have an XR200 shock out in the shop.
I will post accurate dimensions over the weekend.

This looks like it would fit in my Roketa.

I don't think it would fit mine for $150!! However, there may be a way to cross reference other mono shock replacements meeting the 2001 XR200 specs.

The second one looks like my Roketa, only mine has adjustable preload.

The roketa I just got (the 2005 I have been complaining about) is like the first one. It has the threads on the shock body.

I'd have to agree the first looks more like what I have and mines a 2006.

Jason, your 06 has the 1st type with one open and one closed end on the shock?? Mine doesn't. That's kinda weird??? Here is my rear assembly. Notice the shock on the left.

Still no luck no replacement has been found yet. I have found orginal replacement but i was hoping to find a betterr one without having to modify the shock mounts.

Shane, If you found the original then I would go with that, I don't think you're going to find any good aftermarket shocks without having to modify them...Look for an earlier post here about this...

Now that I've gone and looked at it more closely, you're right they are both closed like you said. Sorry for the confusion.

Sokay Bro! Anyway, it would be nice to find a decent replacement for the stock spring/shock setup that is stiffer then a wedding night hardon. It sure looks like the xr shock I posted above would fit right in there. OB1, did you ever find out dimensions for us?????

Do we have any known dimension(without disassembly) or a drawing to look at? I would have to guess that more than one shock will fit under there.
You're right about it being stiff. After 5000miles I'm glad to have a slightly bigger more road worthy tire on the rear. I can ride fairly comfortably with about 20-22psi. Otherwise it's almost like riding a hardtail.

Hey Shane
Send me a picture of your original shock to my e~mail address in my signature I'll see if I can help. I'm a Works Suspension Dealer too, pretty expensive but worth the money. I may have a good used one or maybe A. Lifan may have one.

I measured my roketa shock last night. I confirmed that it is 11.5 in center to center. Gotta be another shock that fits. I think the XR200 shocks are 12.5 ctc, but I'm not sure. These shocks are a really short throw, and I'm not sure mine isn't bottoming when I sit on it. It only collapses about 3 inches then stops dead, no matter how much weight is added on. Could these bikes only have like 3 in of travel in the rear??? No wonder they break when you jump them!!

Yep, that's about it. It's not so bad on the street though, especially with the bigger street tires.
Thanks for doing the leg work on the measurement,

yes the shock is 11.5 inches eye to eye and the eyse are 12mmm or close to 1/2 of an inch. The stock shock I have is closed on both ends and stiff as hello. The shock has been off and the spring is so stiff you can stand on it and it will not give a bit. I think mine was broken by over extending. I can get a stock shock for $75 but they stink and I can prove they will break. My ride was sitting on the back tire before I welded it back. I am a machinest by trade and can make spacers if needed but hate to buy one that can not be modified to fit. I paid $999 for this bike and hate to spend much on it. I just spent 25 bucks for a 44 toot sprocket. I had a 56 tooth and it would only run 65 mph and was tacking 9K rmp. I now run 65 and tack aroud 6500 rmp which makes it much more road worthy. I have ran my bike hard and to the limit. and it has took abuse except the shock. my back tire is starting to show wear from doing burnouts.

Does anyone here have access to Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, or Honda bikes (shocks) that can be compared. There's got to be something that's close without having to go the route of cutting the frame. Maybe in the big 4's group of 125's.
Jason
As far as XR200 shocks go, I know of 2 varieties.
'87 - '92 is a longer travel version with a remote reservoir.
'93 - up is a shorter travel version with no reservoir, probably the shock you guys are looking for.
They are interchangable on the XR200, the mounts and hardware are the same.
I have the short travel shock in shelf stock, I will get "a round 2" measuring the length and mounting dimensions.

Ob1, I have been searching on eBay for RX shocks, and they don't all interchange. Some have an open end where they connect to the swingarm linkage, and others are closed on both ends. We need closed on both ends. A measurement would really be benificial at this point to see if it's even a possibility.

They are interchangable in the years I listed above, I own both machines. Earlier years, I can't say.
Gotta get batteries for the digicam, I will post pix and dims.

This shock WILL NOT work with our swingarms.
I never said the Honda XR200 shock would work with chinese swingarms.
I said I would supply dimensions and pix of an XR200 shock, '93 and up {short travel version}, to help find out if the Honda shocks will work with chinese swingarms.
The shock is interchangeable on Honda XR200 frames of different years
This bike is a '93 XR200, running long travel suspension fore and aft from an '87 XR200, and Lifan power. I also have the '87, and plan on setting it up sometime down the road.

This is a '93 XR200 shock, short travel type, It measure about 13in from center to center of the mounting bolts, which are 9mm diameter.
'87 through '92 are longer travel versions, use the same mounts and hardware, but you must also mount a remote reservoir.

Hey Shane
I was just under one of the A. Lifan GY-5's today measuring a rear shock for a dealer that I know. The A. Lifan rear shock has an adjustable spring not like a lot of these others that the spring is on solid mounts. It measures about 12 1/4 inches eye to eye. I'm not sure of the bolt diameter but that shouldn't be a big deal. Price about $65.00 plus tax & shipping.

OK, I'm on the cutting edge of Chinabike modification again! I just won this 05 Yamaha R1 rear shock on eBay. It's 11 3/4" CTC, and has 3 way clicker adjustment for high and low speed compression, and rebound. $20.00! What a deal. Lots more R1 shocks on there right now. I should have it next week and will attempt the install next weekend. I'll let you all know how it works. This shock has a longer throw then the stocker which will give me more rear suspension travel and it'll be nice to have damping adjustment. Wish me luck!!!

Careful Red, dont want to get the rear too high without lifting the front, steering gets twitchy and headshake can happen at speed. You may be able to drop the tubes in the triples to balance things out.

These guys should have a shock to fit just about anything:

That's good advice Ob1. The Yammi shock has smaller mounting bolts, so I plan to weld in washers of the correct Yammi size in the top of the stock top hole and bottom of the stock bottom hole to make up the 1/4 in difference. This shock should set lower with rider weight on it as the stocker is literally a brick. Worse case scenario, I need to fab a new upper mount, but that's not a problem either. Should be all set. I'll keep you all posted. Mod on............. :D

Dang Red,
You're finding all the cool stuff!! I can't wait to see how this turns out for you. Dad has talked about getting another shock for his and I guess I could use one too. For $20 that's an awesome mod!!
Keep us posted.

I will definately update as soon as I get it in. I hope it arrives this week, and I'll throw it in Saturday. Not gonna take very long to do. All I know is the stocker is a freakin' brick, and my tailbone is wishing I had something softer especially with the frost heaves we have in the roads this time of year. Like riding a paved motocross track 8O . $20.00 is a crazy deal. That shock is well over $500.00 new from Yamaha. There were several others on eBay for around $50.00. If this works out, it's the way to go. Much better quality, compression/rebound damping control, and choice of different springs through Yammi. That is also a rebuildable/revalvable shock so future maintenance is cheep and avaliable. I'm stoked!!!
