What do you make of the 6 wheeler? Is it amphibious?

That looks like Argo goodness, made in Canada. :D http://www.argoatv.com/recreational/rechome.aspx

I'd jump on it at that price.

It appears to be an Argo:

They (Argo) have been at it a while (since 1962).

They float? I would be all over it. I live in a desert, but we have rivers!

There is a local guy here that has a "big one" (Ford powered) that mainly operates in the snow, claims it's better than a snowmobile!

Interesting. I might take a look at it (and that old Honda too).

Anyone know where to get info on restoration parts for these things? Any idea how old it is? What type of motor? Briggs and Stratton type or motorcycle or snowmobile?

No propeller? Does it swim just by spinning its wheels in the water?

restoration parts:

Directly from Argo.

It swims by spinning the paddle type tires in the water. Probably has a KOHLER® motor, drive by torque converter/belt, two stick control side to side. One piece fiberglass "tub".

There were a bunch of companies making similar type stuff in the 60's, some quietly folded, some combined, Argo was the winner, or the last man standing, probably due to international sales.

If it's not an Argo simply walk away, many of the tires/wheels are obsolete for the other stuff, and if you can get them they are EXPENSIVE. In fact official Argo parts are expensive.

I was given an "off brand" one in the 70's, worked ok, needed 6X $300 for wheels and tires (tires bonded to the wheels, oddball crap), needless to say I cut it lose.

Didn't the Banana Splits used to run around in those?

That was the exact image I had in my mind!

That one looks like it could be an off brand... I totally agree with what Reveen says, if it's not a genuine Argo I would pass on it. Impossible to get parts for the off brands. I also had one of the ones with the wheels vulcanized to the rims, replacement tires alone would have cost me as much as a working Argo with good tires :). I sold it to a guy that converted it into a woodbox on his acerage. You could also mount an outboard to them for more usability in the water. They were the big hunting buggy in the pre quad days. Another cool machine that a friend of mine had was a Terra Jet. 4 wheel drive dune buggy type of thing, it was a blast! Though the Argo's and Terra Jet's were both insanely loud as the motor is in the tub as well.

I've seen these on the local craigslist quite often. I also find it somewhat ironic that we have China Riders members warning people to stay away from the "off" brands

Even if it's not an Argo, I'd be really curious about it. These days, Chinese tires abound, and I wouldn't be surprised if you could find tires and rims (as necessary) for cheap.

I love old junk probably just as much as anybody, but sometimes you encounter a thing that is beyond reasonable salvage. The situation is not helped when the very function of the machine in question is obsolete.

I have never bought any junk, but I sure ended up with a pile of junk.

Oh I definitely wasn't saying that the advice isn't good, just given the audience, I found it somewhat amusing :)

I agree. If it runs, I don't see how you can go wrong for $400, or less. ;) Check the rim and tire sizes before you buy, and see if any other rims and tires will fit it. :) This could be a very fun project vehicle, Doc. ;)

There appears to be a forum here:

That may be of some use. There are probably more to be found if you dig around.........

On another side note, I notice that the tires on the 6 wheeler are all mounted backwards... When I had mine an old Argo guy told me to flip the tires side for side (so they're backwards too) and that they run on water a lot better like that... Mebbe he was using this one for fishing or something? They are cool, and the skid steer is a hoot. It introduces a whole different dynamic to driving. Only downside is some of the proprietary parts are either impossible to find or uber pricey :).

Cheers,
Stew

I might look at it. I like projects. :D

I'm concerned about the paperwork. I suppose it would need to be registered both as a boat and an ATV so I'd need 2 sets of tabs. My other concern is running is one thing, being watreproff is something else entirely.

I might call. If it's not an Argo I don't think I'll look at it. :?

If i had one I would not register it as a boat. I certainly would not be out in open water with one. If someone doesnt like it you just say the water got deeper than I thoght it was.
