Snow, cold temps and frightening wind chills... Guess the riding season is over for me. Bummer, hard to believe I rode my bike to work just two weeks ago. It was cold but manageable with lots of warm gear. Guess I will use the winter months to try to fix up my Beast a bit and do a little maintenance to the KLR. I was going to sell the Beast and pick up a GIO dirt bike but I think I will hang onto it instead... Be a good machine to tinker with whilst waiting for spring. How many months away is it again?

Cheers,
Stew

We've got snow and below freezing temps today too. I honestly don't remember snow in our part of the world in November. Button up and enjoy tinkering. I'm still fooling with my Beast too, although time is not allowing me to give it the proper attention at the moment.

I hate winter  . At least I'm still riding. Just got back form the airport screwing around with friends. Heading out on The Dirt Rat after lunch. NEXT week it will be too cold. Highs in the 20's and lows in the single digits  . After that it looks good again.

Bring it on..... can't wait for the snow, quads and bikes go away and the sled comes out, i totally prefer falling off into the snow than landing on bare ground, hopefully i can find some sweet jumps that make for great pics like the one below. http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu188/waynebrandy/scan0002.jpg

What! I'm without a computer for just a month and we are talking about not riding just because of a little snow (24") and a little cold temps (-10F)........
That is what fermented Potatoes are for 8) (people like me) and faith (guys like spuds) or some sort of combination of the two.

Now I know what your saying, "this guy is from Missouri, how cold can it get?" My answer......"Not cold enough!"

Doc, you wouldn't happen to be a orthopedic specialist looking to drum up some business...would you?

Looks like a fun machine although I see the potential for a lot of visits to the Doc.

Son of Weldangrind test drove a bike in Whistler today, and it was about -5 Celcius (23 F).

He, TurboT and I will likely continue thrashing our atv's all winter. :D

Good pic! I was doing that last winter with my Konker! For some reason though, I don't think it would be quite as much fun on my KLR 8O. I'll have to stick with hopefully getting the Beasty running once in a while for a moto fix :D

Jim

Those are such nice bikes, I agree, the KLR would probably not be as much fun as the konker was in those conditions.

Man, I used to do this on my Honda 90 in the early seventies. Across the lake we lived on to get to school. Beat the bus every time. Was told I was a bit nuts for doing it but no one once told me I what I was doing was 'Dangerous'.

I came out of class one day to find 8" of snow on the seat of my little TS100. I rode it home anyway (what a bear to start in the cold). I made it about two blocks before I couldn't stop in time to avoid a car in front of me, so I laid it down (steering controls were largely ignored). Since I was hardly moving, I wasn't hurt and there was no damage.

Haven't ridden in the snow since.

We may get 2" here in the next couple of days with low temps down to the single digits. If so I'll be out on the Bayou and post some shivering pics for you nuts. :P

Oengus

I rode today it hit 67 degrees.

That is 20 degrees above the average high of 48 degrees for November. But not a record though.

The instances of temperatures beating the high record to that of it beating the low record is 2:1 since 1980.

This decade, we set 291,237 record highs, but only 142,420 record lows from Jan. 1, 2000 to Sept. 30, 2009 for the entire US and its 18,000 U.S. weather stations.

That's a warming trend it will raise the averages, not noticeably though day in and day out but on the days it is over the averages people will notice and then on the day that are below the record lows they will notice too....but only half as often.

If there is such a thing as global warming I say bring it on. I hate winter and I live in the Northwest. 15 degrees out now, a record 6 inches of snow on the ground and more falling. I'm pissed. Screw the polar bears.

I did have a fun ride on the ATV though. Riding through powder seems to be just like sand. Stay on the gas and keep up your momentum and hang on.

I wonder what the weather will be like over the next 90-day?

So pretty much based on were your located your going to see different weather; most of the country will be above the mean (average) then other areas will be below the mean.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy126/oengus1963/Climate%20Forecasts/off01_temp.gif

Being in North Eastern Ohio we are often on the cusp of an Isobar, were in the Southern part of the state typically is not; they can get more temperate climate like Kentucky and Tennessee, could say more southern like. But the line seems to have been moving up or north? We been seeing milder winters that alternate from average to above average. We basically get the cold and snow but it does not last long. We get dangerous freezing and thawing, rain that freezes is dangerous. We also are not getting the lake to freeze every year and that affects the climate, when it is not frozen it can create snow and drop it in feet at a time. Then a spike in temp thaws it, flooding occurs in low lying areas. It is like a battle front often and I would say that its likely we see it first that being climate extremes, we can see more instances of 60-70 in the middle of winter and then also more 90-100 in the middle of summer and that's happening and likely to increase in frequencies.

I do not know what to tell you guy? Adapt winter sports are very popular in Washington state?

FastDoc
11-27-2010, 11:36 AM
That is good advise. I just with it would be easier to pack up and move to Kalifornia. The usual Washington winters are OK. We usually get a couple of inches a couple of times a year, but this record breaking cold and snow is a bear.

You're only a day's drive or a few hours flight to Vegas; you could easily get away and escape the cold for awhile. There's cheap accomodation to be had.

Not this year or last year, Doc! It's been cold and wet, on and off, for a while now! Snowing in Jackson right now and that's under 2000 feet!

32 and foggy....not unlike Sacramento!.....but yes....I have to keep my stash well hidden here now. I think they're afraid that those with 'common sense' may try to over!

I do have to say, the fog burned off around 2 and it got warm enough (low 50's) to have a beautiful ray of sunshine come in my garage door during football today! :D
