I put a pair of Nexen N5000 tires on my van a couple months ago and will be going back to have the other two put on.
Just wondering if any of our northern snowbelt friends have any experience with these.

So far they are a vast improvement over the uniroyals that it came with. Only about 2K of use, but they do well with heavy rain and handle very nice.
Made in South Korea.

Those appear to be nice tires, Allen! :) Where did you buy them? Are they less expensive than other tires? :?:

No experience with them. I'm running Coopers right now.

My ma and pa are running studded Nexen snow tires on their car, they really like them. I think Walmart handles them, though I have never seen the tread style that you linked.
Cheers,
Stew
I don't even know what I've got on my car....

My escort had 4 different brands. :?
I got the nexen at a local independent shop. They are cheaper than most tires. About $400 for complete set including tax and lieftime mount and balance.
Did alot of searching for info and most comments were positive. Two friends had them on their vehicles. Both have had been back to get more after the initial purchase.
It appears that they were available at some walmarts. I don't think they carried all the models though. These are more performance oriented. Good for the driving we have here. The uniroyals felt like balloons when taking a corner.
Anyway just checking to see if anyone else had tried them. So far I feel like I made a good purchase. Will find out if they do okay in the snow in couple weeks. Not expecting them to be great, but no worse than the uniroyal tires.

It sounds like a good deal :)

Looks like I may be rolling on Korea designed China made tires.

Tried a set on my Subaru.........
Switched to Michelin Pilot Alpen 1st chance I got. ($200)
Nexen's ok, Michelin's about 400% better, if only I could get this car to stop as good as it goes.
Tried Nexen's on Ranger.....could effectively get stuck on wet leaves.
Switched to Goodyear Wrangler AT tires on the Ranger (235/78/15). Bought because they are not marked "winter" (required in some places here in Canada) blow out price $85 each. Switch between Goodyear's and Nexen's (winter/summer)

Interesting. I had the reverse with the uniroyal tires. The would slip on any wet surface.
Now in my research it looks like some of the early models have been discontinued. I believe because of low quality or poor performance. My tires are considered all season so they should fair okay in the snow. I don't believe they have the snowflake on them. I wouldn't buy them if I had to drive in the snow all the time.
The reviews have been mostly for the high performance summer tires on sportier cars. Mostly because these tires are cheap in the low profile sizes.
Going to give some time to tell for sure. Most likely have some winter driving comments after Christmas.

I have always been skeptical of "those" higher priced tires (Michelin, Bridgestone) for winter......until I got a set, I "believe" now.
Before the Nexen's I had a set of Goodyear Nordic's and they were garbage.
I am in the middle of my Ranger tire switch here, and I believe I will be saving the Nexen's for a trailer, because this "switching" to me has become dumb.

I drive the Coquihalla highway in BC at least once a month, and winter tires are legally required between October 1 and April 30. I switch back and forth, because the alternative is to drive on winter tires all year.
The Cooper snow tires I have are awesome in the snow, but they suck in the rain. We get nothing but rain where I live in the winter, so I'm always happy when I can switch back to the all seasons in April.

Reveen. What model are the Nexens? I don't really see a need for snow tires unless you live in an area that doesn't plow or you are more remote. I never had a problem getting around in MN with regular all seasons.

N5000's.......as I said I bought them for my Subaru, they were ok for "all season", but they sure weren't Michelin's. I have driven out of snow drifts as high as my car with the Michelin's, not "rocked", just drove.
So I tried them on my Ranger, which in all reality is empty most of the time, and I could get stuck on wet grass, which is dumb, so I bought a set of Wrangler's in a fairly aggressive block pattern, and I'm happy. I am happy too that I got that 55 series tire off of my truck for 2 reasons: I want air under my truck to cool the transmission, and I may not get to shovel the end of my driveway so I want to drive over the snow.
We get about 6 bad snow storms a winter and I live on a hill.
Do I "need" snow tires here? No, but it's dumb not to have them.

"Cruise" some of the sport bike or street fighter forums. The "squids" are always looking for a cheap tire that "does good burn-outs".

Thanks Reveen. I was wondering if it was the same model. We only drive in snow about once a year and then its mostly just wet roads around Atlanta.
I don't believe I would use these tires on my ranger. Better for a front wheel drive vehicle. Anyway thanks for the input on the snow traction.
BillR, I read alot of reviews on the car forums. Most people have the N3000 summer tires and for the very reason you mentioned. They want summer cheap. Some though have reported good wear and long life.
If I can get 40K out of them I will be happy. That is all I got from the uniroyals that were suppose to be a good tire. They were new when I bought the van and I have never like them. The nexen tires are an improvement.
If they don't work out I will put them on my buick and get some michelins or yokohamas for the van.
BillR. They van would do nice unintentiol burnouts with the uniroyals. The nexens don't break free with a light pedal input.
I think that for a normal driver on normal vehicle they will be fine. We will see in 10K what they look like.

Yep, had a couple of sets of those, 'cept they were one of the Goodyear models, can't remember which ones.

Don't care for goodyears much either.
So the other pair was put on last night and I checked them for any unusualness and found nothing. All four were made in Korea.

Leaving in the morning for Minnesota. Will give you all a report on the snow ability.
We had some wet roads and ice the older night and these tires would not spin as easily as the old uniroyals. That is encouraging.
Vehicle is a 2005 Chrysler town and country. Its pretty heavy.

Just an update. The tires did okay in the snow for the trip. I wouldn't wnat to drive everyday with them though. Better than the uniroyals they replaced.
As for wet roads. The are great. That is what we had to drive in most of the time.

I am a BIG supporter of MAXXIS tires. if you get one that has 2 steel plies then you are good till the tread is gone. Mostly i like them because the casings are EXCELLENT. for handling, ride and toughness. I had some on my s-10 dirt road-er.the only time i got a flat was from a 1" wide bolt to the sidewall. That truck spent most of its time doing 40+mph usually full sideways over gnarly bedrock and loose, rough gravel

Just an update. The Nexen tires were okay. Didn't last that long. I will be replacing the last two soon. The first two I replaced last summer. Tires wore nicely and overall did fine.
Yokohamas next.
