Can any of your guys help me fix my boat?

I can usually figure stuff out but this has me stumped. :?

The shifter control cable broke on my boat. The boat is a 1975 17 foot Orrion with an 85HP Johnson.

I have the cable removed everywhere except for where it inserts into the controller. I don't see how to take it out. There is a small Allen screw in the pivot and I removed it but it does not seem to help.

Once I get this fixed I can get back in the water!

Here is the other (throttle) cable. It seems fine I just photographed it so you can see how it connects. It seems the same as the shift cable.

I don't have much boat experience and I'd like to see more photos (perhaps with arrows), but I think I understand. It looks like an allen head grub screw is threaded into the nut; does it bottom out when fully tightened? Is it a clear hole that the allen screws goes into?

If so, I've seen a similar fastener where the nut has a taper at one end and two intersecting lines cut in the tapered end. The idea is that the more the allen screw is tightened, the more the nut expands to retain tension. Does that sound plausible? I can't see the back side of the nut, so I'm not sure.

The Allen bottoms out. With the screw removed I still can't budge the pivot.

I have a thought...

In the first picture there looks like a roll pin or something stuck in the end of the connector. Maybe I need to loosen the Allen and pull that out?

I'm looking at boat part web sites and more confused now. I thought my boat was a 1975 and the pre 1979 cables don't look anything like it. The post 1975 ones look right.

Gotta get this boat fixed before you visit!

There's a device that I service at work that requires the roll pin to be driven in to remove it. Maybe yours is the same. In either case, yes, I'd remove the pin.

Let us know what happens when you remove the pin. Can you post a link that shows an exploded view?

it looks like a smaller setup to our beasts front drum brakes where the cable attached to the lever..

doc have you tried checking around where the lever that the cable attches to mounts to the motor ? like maybe a screw gets undone and the outter peice of the cable attaches to might come off ? or just bend the peices apart to pop the cable off then squeeze them back together when you reinstal the cable..


btw i hope you know where the new cable is supposed to be routed, my buddy chad redid his cables a year or so ago and he taped the new cable to the old one and then pulled it out..
