I have the Lifan 200GY and it needs a lot of tuning up and when I ride I almost have to keep the throttle twisted to keep it alive in any gear above 2nd. It runs fine in 1st and second but when I switch to third it wants to die if I don't constantly have the throttle twisted just enough to give it gas. I think if i let go of the throttle in third gear it should stay running but it sputters. What the heck is wrong?

First of all is the carb clean? The idle adjustment is on the right side of the carb. It is a horizontal screw. Turn it in about a 1/4 turn to raise the idle to about 1000-1500 rpm.

Also depending on elevation I found that moving the c-clip on the needle one notch closer to the point helped with idling issues. It richens the mixture a touch.

Have you replace the sparkplug with a new NGK too? Do that. $2 at an oreillys or autozone or something.

Ok well I bought an NGK DR8EA because the guy who owned it before me had the wrong one in there. The gap spacing was really tall compared to the DR8EA. Also the C - clip was set to give it more gas, so closest to the tip of the pin. The inside where the pin goes looks spotless, im not sure if thats where i'm supposed to look for dirt but there it looked clean. When i'm riding i will rev it up to about 6,000 to switch gears and it always revs up then it gives out for a second the continues what it is supposed to do. I'm thinking thats a miss fire but i'm not sure. Also the throttle is loose about a quarter twist. So up to a quarter twist it doesn't throttle up. I'm not sure if the throttle cable is just loose or stretched out.

Having to keep the throttle open is quite possibly not about giving it enough gas - what you are giving it is a enough air i.e. having to keep the slide raised to get enough air in to get to a burnable air fuel mixture. If it is rich there is not enough air = fuel mixture that will not burn well and the bike bogs and dies (and will not pull a higher gear).

So this could suggest it is running very rich (is the plug black and sooty?).
So I would take the float bowl off and check:
1. that the floats are not full of gas
2. that the main jet and needle jet are screwed in fully
3. that the main jet is of a size around 100 - 110
4. that the float level is right

If all these things are right then check the choke is not stuck on. and finally check that the passageways and jets are all open.

if the c-clip is in slot closest to point than it is way to rich. i would place clip in the middle slot and try to adjust idle and mixture there. see how it runs it may be lean at that point and you have to move the clip closer to point by one notch. if it is next to notch it is to rich.

hope this helps

when you adjust the carbie, you ll have to take it off, take it apart, wash it in kerosene and blow it dry with compressed air, which u can get in a can. then try and find the stock setting (via info booklet or here on the forum) and set it up like that ( or more or less if you know what you want).
there may be sth loose or a seal may be broken, or dirt got stuck somewhere. also clean the air filter.

after the above, if probs persist, you ll know it s not the carbie.

have fun! (it should be fun, just don t use blind force, carbies are sensitive beings) :)

I am NOT A carb Guy for sure but wanted to stress if you do Take it a part - Please NOTE how it goes back togather. I Did this and put one spring back in wrong in mine and fought with it for two days - Almost freekin out why it wouldn't idle right. Take your time and pay attention to assembly dissassembly. The guys here will definately guide you in the right direction for sure.......Definately search for pictures or even a service manual with the carb instructions. This will help as well. Good Luck and hope you get'r figured out.

Good guidance from Andrew. That said, most of our carbs are less complex than Andrew's, so disassembly and repair is not that difficult.
