Whats up fellows.... just wanted to know who wears a conventional full face or the newer style flip-up type? I myself, have a noisy fulmer,(full face).that fatigues my ears to no end!! To be honest,. probably would be less noisier riding without a helmet at all!! Just think saftey is worth more. So my question is,...who makes a good name brand flip-up or is it worth the money....where could i find one? Thanks Bobby

I only use a solid full face. I'm not sold on the strength of the hinges of a flip-up. I've broken teeth before, and it's no fun.

I also only use a DOT/Snell full face.

Take it from a man who has actually used his helmet, you want the best design. I wear Arai and Shoei.

I have had modular helmets in the past but now just go with solid chin bar full face helmet for the reasons mentioned above.

Snell will not approve the modular helmets yet.

Regular full face for me.

That may be the first one.

This is from snell's website.

Why won't Snell certify some types of helmets like flip up front designs?
Snell does not dismiss out of hand any helmet design that strays from the conventional. Snell does not point out any design specifications other than general requirements in its standards. We are, however, always concerned with innovations and new designs that may effect helmet's ability to protect the wearer, or in some cases helmet's potential to cause injury. At present the Foundation has not had the opportunity to test any of the flip up front type helmets for certification. We do not find any fault with these designs as long as they are used according to the manufacturers instructions and meet all of the requirements of the standard. We will also certify any size of helmet as long as it meets the same requirements as any other Snell certified helmet.

I have a Scorpion EXO-900 that I got for fathers day last year. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/scorpion/exo-900/
I really like the modular design as I wear prescription glasses and worming them onto my head after putting on a conventional full face helmet was a PITA. That being said though, the helmet is larger, heavier, and noisier than my AGV full face was. Quite a bit noisier actually, I think that's due to the wind going over the hinge mechanism. Other than that it has a very secure hinge and locking system and it feels every bit as safe as my old full face. You do notice the weight on long rides though. If I didn't wear glasses I would definitely go for a conventional full face... I need to go for lazer eye surgery

Edit: Plus the Scorpion logo on the front is a good rendition of my first initial... Bonus points!

Helmets.....big issue. Many opinions, many myths.

Snell, not 1.5 miles from the keyboard I'm presently sitting at, was one of my clients for a few years. It's actually a very small, outfit/testing lab here in a strip mall/office complex.
Is it good that they are a government approved testing and certification lab? Of course. Someone has to put some actual baselines on safety products. I also can't help but think there may be some political involvement. Just a hunch and paranoia on my part. No proof whatsoever.

That being said, helmets are a personal preferance item.
I cannot wear a full face. It's not going to happen. Bad claustrophobia. The only thing I want that close to my face is my coffin lid and at that point, I won't care. If the PRK Overlords ever pass a full face helmet law, my riding days of 42 years are over.

I have two helmets I currently wear. both DOT Approved. One smaller beanie for the Vic and one 3/4 helmet for dirt and the Q.

I prefer the beanie but believe I need a little more side protection on dirt.
Why do I prefer the beanie? Because the 3/4 helmet covers my ears. one of the critical senses to keep one alive when riding around other traffic.
I can hear EVERYTHING with my beanie, all the way around me.

Is a Snell Approved, full face helmet the best protection for mashing your melon into a wall? Yes......but it also stifles far more of your life saving senses than any other helmet. Like I stated. Personal preference. What's more important to you, is the question you have to ask yourself. Best protection upon crash or having the most senses to help avoid that crash.

Another funny thing about Snell. Here in the PRK, like most other states....there's a helmet law for motorcycles.....but there is no helmet law for convertable cars. Snell himself, was killed in an open top car.
