I'm in the market...

What features should I look for?

FWIW I'm also looking for a GPS. Is is better to get them combined? I know GPS's are very cheap nowadays.

I don't drive much, but I need one when I do. I also need it on the Gold Wing.

Any thoughts or opinions?

The Idaho police must be cracking down on speeders. While I was riding on Sunday I noticed a cop had a motorcyclist pulled over by the side of the road. ;) I can't recommend a radar detector, but I hope you will keep us updated regarding your search, Doc. :)

I like the cordless one(s) because not all the vehicles I'd use it on have power outlets.

We all speed, everyone. (All have fallen short of the glory of God...).

With the RD when a person is drifting over the limit the beep will be a strong reminder to check the speed.

It has good reviews, does what I need it to do, and lacks the bells and whistles I don't need. The dollar/performance value seems good.

The only issue I will have is mounting it to the windshields of the Gold Wing and the Harley. I hope it has good suction cups.

I won't need it in the rain on the bikes as I ride under the speed limit in the wet. This way I don't have to worry about weatherproofing.

I won't need it on the Beeza or the KLX.

It has a jack to plug into the Gold Wings audio system so I can hear the alerts on the bike.

I think it will be fine. :wink:

Even if a person does not deliberatly speed (I was not when I got tagged the second time, quite the contrary) it will alert a person to traps and give an opportunity to check the speedometer when necessary.

A work pickup I used to drive at a job I had about 9 or so years ago had a radar detector. It was quite annoying, always beeping, and it wasn't because of radar. I don't like them. Does everything that's not radar still set them off nowadays?

From what I've read they are much more sensitive and more specific nowadays, no comparison. Some have integrated GPS's that learn where the false alarms are and wor't trigger when passing them. Mine does not have this feature. Those are in the $500 bracket.

Back in the day, cop friend pulled over a speeder. 70 in a 55...
Very nice lady from out of state.
She said, "Oh, this is a rental and it doesn't have cruise control. I'm just not used to that."
He looked in the window and said, "It does have an accelerator pedal and a speedometer"... :wink:

It makes me miss my time on the track.

Not having to keep a constant lookout for police, gravel, oil, and soccermoms in minivans makes it much easier to go very fast safely.

The detector seems excellent. I'm learning it's features and how to interpret it's warnings.

I have to find an adaptor, or make one, to convert a cigarette plug to a 2 wire trailer type plug that is on all my motorcycles for the vests and/or charger.

Not sure if this would work, but is it just a Baryl type plug? These guys make good products.

Each of my motorcycles has such a plug already installed. It's for my heated gloves. I need something that will plug into that that the male cigarette lighter plug of the radar detector will plug into.

I also have to make sure the polarity is right.
