The BSA is non-SAE, non-metric. It seems to be Whitworth, whatever the heck that's supposed to be.
Whitworth tools are hard to come by, typically old, and expensive.
I see Craftsman and other tool companies have newfangled sockets and spanners that are semi-universal. They are supposed to be good for rounded off or oddball head sizes.
Does anyone have experiance with these, or even know what I'm talking about? I realize I've not been too clear.
I just ant to get this motor sorted and in good nick so I need a proper spanner so it's not so dodgey.

Is nothing close like a 13mm/1/2" fits.

Has a chart toward the bottom.

Of course there may not be a socket that is a close enough fit to avoid damaging the bolt head.
I would plan to purchase the right size spanners  and sockets to work on the bike with.

Ah, the joys of Brit Bike ownership. ;)

Good luck, Doc! The BSA is very fortunate to have landed in your capable, caring hands. :)

I'd like to replace the old dodgey buggered bolts with new ones, but God only knows what the thread sizes are. SAE? Metric? Some weird Welch size? The threads look very fine, more so than anything I've seen that I can recall. I'd like to replace the buggered screws in the engine cases and primary drive case with prper Allens, even though the BritBike Forum guys would have my head for that. At least I could get it properly torqued.

I was thinking about you and your new bike the other night, when I took my daughter to see Cars 2. They reference Whitworth fasteners in a funny way.
IIRC, Barnone or Reveeen recommended a set of Whitworth tools when you first announced your bike. :) I wonder if a SAE tap and die set pitch gauge would identify the thread pitch.

If you really want to get messed up:

"British Standard Cycle"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Standard_Cycle
It generally comes as 26 threads per inch (tpi) and is similar to 1 mm ISO threads which are equivalent of 25.4 threads per inch and also run at a 60 degrees angle.
M8 × 1.00 metric threaded parts can interchange with 5/16th × 26 tpi parts with a "Class B fit", meaning you should not go back and forth between threadings.
If "original" is the goal order your fasteners from: http://www.britishonly.com/estore/default.asp

Thanks for the info, mates. Originality is not the first priority. I just want it to run right and look right. I also want to ride it more than work on it, although the last paramater is less likely met by a BritBike.

Here, Doc http://www.metricmcc.com/
I bought my Whitworth spanners from here for my Brit bicycles.
What sucked, for me, was that I'd sold all my Whitworth stuff when I got rid of my MG Midget, figuring I'd never fall under the spell of a 55 degree thread pitch ever again. What a doofus!

If you decide to sell the bike, the Anglophiles will probably pay more for a bike with original hardware, Doc. ;)

Some of those guys on BritBikes are pretty anal about originality of their bikes. No change is an 'improvement' to some of them.
