My daughter has a birthday coming up. She has been wanting a camera. Wasn't happy with the toy one because it didn't take real pictures. 8O

Since she is actually pretty good with her stuff I plan to buy her a used camera on ebay that she can use.

Probably Canon or Olympus. Any suggestions on a durable and simple model. 5mp or better.

I may get a new one and let her have one of my Canons.

She is pretty smart and can operate things with ease. The kid cameras would be a joke to her. 1.3mp is not worth the money.

Really good digital cameras nowadays are pretty cheap. I don't think the Nikons are so intuitive. I have a Canon and a Sony.

MP's are not so important as they used to be. Even the cheapest cameras have plenty now.

I just found what is called an olympus tough. Older models may be in the price range.

This camera is shock/water resistant. Looks pretty simple to operate. Rechargeable battery pack.

She already has a dell computer and can install her own games. I believe she will be able to download her own pictures too.

The old Kodak 104 would have been perfect! Built like a tank. Point and click and cartridge film.

Do they still sell film?

I collect antique cameras. Its a hobby of mine. I think I'm the only one who still has film!

The digital age is awesome! When I was a kid I had an old Instamatik... You had to buy the film and take it in for processing ($$$). If you wanted to show someone your pics you had to physically take them with you and show them... Nowdays you can point, click and email it to all your friends in minutes! Oops, sorry! I didn't help you with your question but I had a flashback instead :). I think a camera is a great gift though, my son has had one since he was about 6 I think, though he takes most of his pics with his ipod now. Works great but it was an expensive little booger! :)

She has been asking for awhile now. Her birthday is next month.

The olympus tough looks like a good unit for her. If she leaves it outside it should be okay.

I think the Olympus Tough is a good camera choice for a child. :) However, I believe you reported you have a Canon Powershot camera, and those cameras are certainly easy to operate. You could give your daughter the Canon Powershot, and get a new camera for yourself. :)

My only suggestion is waterproof, but I guess it depends on where you're going to use it(where you're daughter will use it).

I always try to read reviews online, but I just google them I don't know of a specific site to check.

Thanks Jim. The Olympus Tough is water proof to 3 meters. I am thinking that it may get left outside or spilt on.

I took mine in the river, and snowboarding, and I'm old enough to know better :P Now I have a waterproof one.

I found the 7-8MP older versions of the the olympus tough. They are much cheaper on the used market.

The Olympus Tough sounds like a good choice, Allen. ;) A 7-8 megapixel camera has more than enough resolution. :) How much do these used cameras sell for on eBay?

It looks like I may be able to get one in the $40 range. The 10mp ones are going for about $70.

I don't think your daughter needs 10 megapixels, Allen. My new camera is 14 megapixels, but I have set it to take photos at 6 megapixels. ;) I think $40 is a very good deal on that camera! I hope you find a camera in good working condition. :)

The 7mp model will be just fine. That is all I use. Now I just watch until one is going for the right price.

I got her a kodak. It went cheap enough. She had mine out yesterday and took some ebay pics for me.

Her Birthday is in 3 weeks now. I should have it here and ready to go by then.

Nice catch! :) For that price, you can't go wrong, Allen. ;)

My next thought is water proof cameras should float... I'll have to look on ebay I suppose.

another vote for the Olympus. they're known to make bulletproof point-and-shoot cameras. definitely would be what i would consider for a 5 year old.

i shoot 120 with a Lubitel 166V i got off eBay and i'm putting together my kit to develop my b&w negs at home. ;)

Today was her birthday and I gave her the kodak camera. We will see how it goes. If she can take care of it we will upgrade later on.

The inside pics appear to be grainy. The outside ones are pretty good. I read that I may need to update the firmware on the camera.

I picked up a new camera yesterday (as my old one is at the bottom of Okanogan Lake), this one came with an accessory kit which includes a strap that floats so the camera won't sink :)

katoranger

The kodak has already failed. I don't think it was anything she did. I bought another one just like it that is missing the charger. I won't let her near the water with it.

I hope the camera is water resistant otherwise a floating strap isn't much good.

That's to bad, warranty should cover it though?

Yes, I got a fuji xp20, it's waterproof to 5m I believe. My last one was waterproof, but it didn't float...

NO warranty on used ebay cameras. I didn't pay much for it so we will try another one. Same model means that I will have parts.

Ah right I forgot about that. Good luck with the new one.
