250cc gio...waterproof?
 

hey guys i have a 250cc gio and when i go riding its usually mud and water and i was wondering whats the best way to make the beast waterproof :lol: ?
i guess start with a snorkel has anyone else done this?
or have any ideas?

No one here knows mud better than Midlifecrisis. :P

With that said, I'd personally stay out of deep water and mud. Shock linkages, chains and sprockets, bearings, electrical connections, crankcase breather, airbox, carb vents etc are all vunerable to mud and water entry.

Water in the intake will hydro-lock the motor and ruin it. I did this once to a girlfriend's Acura when we lived in Connecticut. We were stuck in a Noreaster and I drove through too deep a puddle and ruined her brand new car :cry: . Thank God for merciful insurance on that deal...

It's your quad so enjoy it as you see fit. It's just that for me the risk/benefit ratio does not favor fording deep water.

If you are going to ride in the water then seal of the electrical the best you can. Put some dielectric grease on on the connections. Seal where the wires engine the engine case.

I personally don't like mud and water that much either.

I have built a snorkle for mine but have yet to use it (suppose I should one of these days lol) but I have not had the problems i had before I upgraded the carb.

i used to get alot of water in my air filter (old chinese one) and would have to sit there riving the engine to get the water out. I have since upgraded it to a K&N crankcase filter and that seemed to take care of most of the problems I had but still happens once in a wile.

use VASOLINE... same stuff .. cheaper..

May not be a factor but they are not the same. Dielectric grease is silicone based and will not harm rubber or plastics. Vaseline is petroleum based and prolonged contact can degrade some rubbers and plastics. May work fine, but I also use dielectric grease. Specifically Dow DP-4, an aviation based product.

It's expensive. A tube cost me about $15 but I still have a lot left after 12 years. :wink:
