cranks but no start

I am brand new to this and i hope to do this right.got grandkids taotao 125 new cheetahs about 3 years ago. I have very big back yard and they have good place to ride they have not been put through the old ringer. the one that has and is giving me trouble is the boys 125 it keeps getting harder and harder to start and now won't start.i am some good when it needs work. it has a new battery and a new plug and wire, solenoid, regulator, cdi box and have checked the valve clearance and it is good.i did this twice and the machine started and ran good until it is turned off and then it will not start what so ever.it did this twice. this is where i am at now.i hope i can get some info on this before i go crazy.thanks very much randy

Will it start once the engine has cooled down? Are you setting the valves when the engine is cold?

Check for crap in the carb .

it has new carb on it. engine was cold when it started i ran it for about 10 minutes and then it would not start cold or hot after the first start.

Does it crank? Have you double checked for spark when its not starting?Need some clues.

newone22 01-26-2022 08:11 AM

i have checked spark at different times like when it won't start and when it just turns over and over. the 2 times it started was right after i adjusted valves and cleaned plug and it wasn't that bad it is new.what gets me is that after i work on it it may hit or start and then nothing.i have no ideal. thanks

If you have spark then it's has to be a fuel problem. Have you tried adjusting the idle mixture? Open the old carb and see what size jets it had. Just because you bought a new carb doesn't mean it has the right jets.

To expand on what Jerry said ,just because you have a new carb ,doesn’t mean it didn’t come pre loaded with crap ,I often find metal shavings in brand new carbs so I remove the bowls before they get installed .Also ,your fuel ,tank,or lines might also have issues .

I agree with these guys about fuel. Do the easiest thing and make sure your carb is getting fuel. Pull the line off the carb and verify the fuel is running from the tank freely! Do this first and then go from there.

I battled this type issue recently on quad that sat for couple years. The gas in the tank was terrible and even after cleaning as best I could it took a bit of time and cleaning of plug to get it all out.Every time it wouldn't start pulled the plug and it was wet with foul smelling old gas.
I kept cleaning the plug and finally after all the old crop was gone runs great.

Ok, I'm gonna tell ya what I'd do. Spray some starting fluid in the airbox. If if starts and runs briefly it's probably a fuel issue. If you keep it running then it starts to run without you spraying any more starting fluid, I'd bet it's you valve lash.

Ok!! here is the latest on what i did on taotao, i removed carb and checked it out for anything could not find anything cleaned new plug checked gas and flow of gas and after assembling all parts all it did was backfire a couple of times and that was it nothing else.i am lost.

What he said. If that doesn't work you at least know it's not gas.

i tried starting fluid and would not do anything i had the air filter off and it makes no difference. still lost
